PORT FOLIO Andrea Policastro Architectural and Naval designer
R Simple can be harder than complex: You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.

RESUME Andrea Policastro_09.01.1993 I am a very determined person, in fact I believe that the importance of goals in life is closely linked to our personal growth, our selfdetermination. I like to overcome new limits and put myself to the test in situations unknown to me, in order to grow as a professional and as a person. My path so far has always had simplicity as a constant, which in my opinion has an importance that should not be underestimated and forgotten.

MA.CU.TO. Powerboat workshop | July 2017
MA.CU.TO. (make custom toys) is a 34 meter semi-displacement motor boat project, with alluminum structure and superstructure. The boat was developed taking into account the needs of the customer: an artist, collector of art. Designed on 3 decks: it develops from the lower deck, crew and guests in the bow and features an openable beach club on the stern, making it a very flexible space; on the aft block there is a technical compartment and engine room. Going up to the main deck, a main access point for the boat was designed with a large and bright main saloon featuring the possibility of having an artwork display. At the bow of the same deck overlooks the master bedroom, spacious with indoor sauna and private access to the pool, its main feature is the large skilight in
the cieling. Finally, on the sun deck, there is an area for guests with a dining table and a bar, in the bow there is a cockpit lounge area with everything that is reserved to the captain. The interior and external design create a completely new style in the world of yachts. The minimalist interiors let space for artwork and natural light. Technical information:

02 GEA 80’
Master’s degree thesis 24 m | July 2017
Gea 80’ arises from the need to merge two totally different styles of living the sea and sailing. It is a fort between what is the surface in water and all that is visible outside of it. It is a 24-meter hull in carbon with very high performance in terms of performance and stability. a new “dss” stability system has been added to the hull in addition to the new tilting keel system. In opposition to all this there is a daily cruiser, designed to combine a very elegant and clean style. The internal layout consists of a single big cabin that comes from a large window, in the central area a large engine room that keeps all the advanced systems for the performance of the boat and in
the middle we find a large common area. At the bow all the spaces for the crew and the storage for the sails have been conceived. The project is preliminary and development. Technical information::

MONOLITHIC DISINTEGRATION Rome Concrete Contest | Architecture | July 2016
From an initial analysis of the lot, the site has a deep centrifugal nature, the flows unfold in the side streets and along the predominant N / O-S / E axis. The concept proposes a centripetal inversion towards the lot of our project, to do this we started from a monolith of concrete, shaped on the shapes of the lot, which disintegrates and is cut by the flows of the side streets. The variable section cuts, depending on the function assigned to them, were filled with a “dressing” of green spaces and various routes, with different stopping points and interest points. At the first concept of DISCREGATION definable HORIZONTAL, so we could abstractly even refer to the swirling shape of the Roman symbol par excellence:
the Colosseum, we add that of VERTICAL DISGREGATION, varying the section and height of the floors that make up the lot lot so to create multi-purpose spaces on different levels. There is a dematerialization of the zero plane in favor of inclined planes in different ways, through these and horizontal planes at different heights a mechanism is created in which the zero plane is used only in a limited way, compared to the underlying volumetric development. The whole project has been developed taking into account the principles of Design for All, thus offering maximum flexibility and usability by all types of users.

ROMAN AND PALATINE FORUM Redevelopment of archaeological site | July - December 2015 | built
Under the guidance of the architect Luigi Bandini Buti, appointed as a consultant by the municipality of Rome for the redevelopment of the routes to the Roman forum, (a work commissioned by the Superintendent of the Archaeological Heritage of Rome), I contributed to the redevelopment and accessibility of the Roman Forum and Palatine. The project included a preliminary phase of terrestrial analysis and study of existing routes to recreate new and accessible ones. From September to December the task was to revive Cad maps that show the new path morphology with the differentiation of the level of
complexity and accessibility. The whole system of vertical and horizontal signage of the routes has been redesigned, taking into account the diversity of users that is concentrated in high-flow places like these. In addition to the development of the routes, a “pop up map has also been designed, patented as a utility model, within which the site has been divided into 4 different areas and for each of the areas there is a system that describes the buildings present in the archaeological site and what has been the function from the historical point of view.

06 THINGK
Temporary store | Milan design week 2017 | Built
Development of a temporary store in C.so Garibaldi 104, Milan, for a start-up of the Politecnico di Milano: “THINGK. A second skin was designed for the existing building with a wooden structural system that served as a support for the products to be exhibited. One of the constants of the project was the use of the white color, used for all finishes, affich gave greater brightness to the space and highlighted the finishes and the invoice of the products. The entire exhibition and lighting aspect was closely related to a visual communication project, able
to guide the user through the path. One of the 4 walls is destined to the main product of the startup: a kitchen scale; on the wall was installed a system of gradual shelves with the same proportions of the real scale, to symbolize the materialization of the product.

THE FLEXIBLE HOUSE Bachelor Thesis| February 2016
A home that meets the needs of every type of user! This is the principle from which we started for the realization of our project. An arduous challenge, but we have decided to face by placing all our attention to what are the specific needs of each user and especially how much the way of living varies over time in relation to the home. The design follows the canons of the Design for All, taking into account human diversity. To make the spaces of the house flexible we have hypothesized some specifics to be analyzed, which would succeed, if they are well calibrated to satisfy everyone’s needs. In order we first analyzed the automation system of the domestic environment linked to the electrical plant with a focus in particular on what is and what is being born, eviscerating the history of home automation and its variation. A home
automation system to date would solve very large problems within a home with very low costs compared to those that usually feel around. Secondly, we focused on the design of internal partitions by providing removable and / or movable walls by means of double tracks (ceiling and floor) in order to make moving and creating new spaces easier, avoiding future masonry work, which it would only involve excessive waste of materials and labor. We have also provided an elevated inspection floor for a correct passage of the plant. Also the furnishings, which will be studied for possible displacements, providing for modular systems. The combination of all these solutions turns out to be a “home system” that can be adapted to all surfaces and buildings, whether they are new or pre-existing.

POLI LIGHT MILAN University Workshop | 2015
The theme of the POLI Light Milan workshop, was aimed at redeveloping an area of the campus of the Bovisa Polytechnic, giving it new life through artistic intervention and architectural with natural or artificial light. We analyzed with the group those that are the most interesting points of the campus, focusing on the activities and areas already present to find something new and innovative. We wdesigned, therefore, some symmetrical septa with a rectangular wooden frame, which contained inside a rag with different shades of blue. In the composition that you see in plan on the right, you can see how a real multisensory path was created that would allow
the various students and users passing through to obtain a private space to spend time inside the campus. The effect of the rag with the passage of time in the arc of a day created nuances and a game of shadows always different. To “hinder” the plant and the development of the septums we hypothesized a raised ground in grass, which was suitable for a hypothetical free session on the lawn, so as to leave the space free from any encumbrance.

ZERO FAME PAVILION Interior Architecture design Lab | 2014
The project for the “Fame Zero pavilion aims to encompass all the functional aspects of an exhibition space, which evokes the most appropriate principles of the theme through interior design. Starting from the outside, the structure has symmetrical septa between them in reinforced concrete and large windows that allow you to have plenty of natural light inside. The interior is divided into three macro zones, the first at the entrance that houses a book-shop and a reception, on both sides of the large spaces intended for works of art, before moving into the area behind the exhibition
area with supporting partitions that also act as exhibitors. The structure has been studied and designed taking into account the surrounding area of the Indro Montanelli park in Porta Venezia in Milan. The shape and the essentiality of the structure have been studied and designed according to the style of the Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

10 FENDI
Temporary concept installation | April 2016 The project stems from the idea of being able to create an exhibition “bottle for Fendi Rome, in which a sculpture by a Japanese artist was conceived. The expected height of the bottle is 10m, the challenge was to be able to find a cold deformable material to have as few points of fixing at sight and the possibility of being able to insert the installation inside before the final closure. The icon of the project emulates one of the historical products of the Italian fashion house, or the historical bowl of the Fendi perfume, in an uncommon scale. The project is currently in the final phase awaiting approval by the customer.

WIREWASTE New Urban Ecology Contest | Winner | March 2016
The Wirewaste project aims at a simple interpretation of the furniture dedicated to waste collection. The goal is to design a product that iconically refers to the shape of a basket, subtracting excess elements and preserving the twodimensional appearance of it, through a structure with a “U profile in metal tubular. In order to reach the goal, we interviewed the experts, who are the users who will most interact with the object, focusing on the actions that are performed, the time that is usually used for cleaning and the time intervals that run between a placement and subsequent change of bag.
Taking into account aspects such as ecocompatibility and eco-sustainability, we have designed an object that can be realized with very simple production processes and then be dismantled and reused. The main component is a steel tube that undergoes processes of cutting, drilling and bending to obtain the profile of the frame. The upper parts of the basket are obtained by blanking / drawing and cutting / welding the sheets. The production technologies used can be used for limited production volumes and for longer runs.
