RECYCLABLE HARBOUR “Many small changes will soon make a big difference” ( Strauss, Emanuel ) Pesaro’s current harbour doesn’t connect very well with the city making it spatially inaccessible. The iconic warehouses on the north-side, the square in the middle which slowly sinks into the harbour waters and an introvert built-up area in the south are the three urban typologies experienced on site. Combined with the rough industrial objects a unique atmosphere rarely seen and experienced in Italian seaside cities is created. Therefore Pesaro’s new smart harbour honours these objects and transforms them into new unique qualities. With small interventions and maximum efficiency Pesaro’s new harbour will make space for tourism, events, a local hangout area and entrepreneurism. The 1st intervention was to connect the bicycle route from the boulevard with the bicycle route on the west side of the harbour making Pesaro’s new harbour accessible for pedestrians and bikers. Connected to this route the main line through the harbour begins making a secondary boulevard connecting the three zones. This boulevard is highlighted with young trees in containers and as these trees grow with Pesaro’s new harbour they will be building stones for the next designer when Pesaro’s harbour is again in need of change.
The 2nd intervention was to determine what to demolish, transform or preserve. Important is to keep iconic details making references to the former harbour function. Materials that are stripped from the buildings are recycled to make the connecting bridges and street furniture. The 3rd intervention was to turn current urban typologies into a quality for city scale and neighbourhood scale. The introvert built-up area contains a neighbourhood square, housing, temporal housing and wellness. The dynamic square will be preserved in its original state making it open to programmatic and seasonal flexibility. Preserving the framework of the warehouses, the spatial identity of the harbour is kept visible. The warehouses can be used as ‘pop-up warehouses’ they are able to facilitate different types of temporary programs. All these interventions lead to a sustainable new unique place where different types of programs can colour the industrial framework. Which will result in a large variety of motion.
