Modular Catalyst
from the tiling of a water plane to the design of a floating structure
Thesis project advisor: Prof. Eng. Alessio Erioli [09/15-07/16] [Concept, 3D modeling, rendering, prototyping]

This thesis project aims to work on Ravenna’s docksland area, a strategic navigable waterway that connects the sea to che city center, with an unfulfilled potential. The project is designed to be implemented as a catalyst for this urban sector, in order to generate spaces and passages with the combination of modular floating structures that can be reconfigurable to support different use programs. Those elements aggregate together to create a system that acts on the dock space, changing the visual perception from barrier to urban waterfront. The relationship between modularity and architecture is part of every project step, inserted as basic design parameter. On top:“Cairo” geometry. Below: 3D concept of the Cairo’s tiling principles.
06
Plan rendering of the complete aggregation on Ravenna’s docksland: only one of the possible solutions.
Concept The need to obtain a floating structure with growth capacity and functional flexibility results in a modular approach that follows the principle of maximum variation/minimum use of elements. The design process starts from a pure geometry concept and the shape selected is the “Cairo pentagon and its tessellation principles. Then the project begins to consider the third-dimension, investigating the possibilities to include variation and heterogeneity into the system, without compromising the modularity and integrating multi-level ways. All modular types are born from this first project steps, defined from some tiling principles and able to create different combinations starting from a limited number of elements. The dynamic nature of this design makes possible the use in different contexts, thanks to his remarkable adaptive features.
07
Modular Design The morphology of all modules and their parts is defined by the study of some key principles in fields of buoyancy, stability and yacht design. Every typology is based on the same hull: the shape is chosen to counteract the multi-directional thrust of the marine environment and to ensure the stability also with variable loads. The structure is made in fiberglass, with a maximum thickness of 23mm. Starting from the hull shape and according to tiling principles already defined, every single part of modules (for example columns and vertical finishings) is designed in search of continuity and tectonic integration: geometrical, structural, functional and perceptual. The hull shape is used also to build the upper horizontal structure, using the same mold for the production. Solutions are proposed for some problems typical of floating structures and also for the placement of activities into the architectonic solution. An update of all modular structures, already defined only geometrically, allows the choice of modules for every combination or context. Below: demonstration of modularity with the helicoidal principle. Next page: design of some modules.
08
View of the modular agregation from the docksland.
09
Prototyping The final prototyping (13 modules, 6 different types, scale 1:50) shows the real application of the project’s key-principles, integrated in every part of the final architectonic solution. The prototype is built to allow the modular reconfiguration of the system, in order to preserve the continuity of internal paths and save design guidelines.
10
Also the production process simulates the real one, with the same hull used for every structure (basic and upper horizontal parts). Elements are produced in different ways: planar parts are cutted and carved with a laser machine, complex parts are made in SLS with a 3D printing process and hulls are laminated in fiberglass, as it would be in the real process.

Loft in Darsena Visualization project for Officina Meme [06/17] [3D modeling, rendering] [Published: Casa Premium 06/17] “An abandoned building can be transformed in big residential spaces full of light, where the icon of the industrial world is protected and inserted into a new housing beauty. Officina Meme is an architecture studio founded in 2015, highly specialized in urban redevelopment and activation of unused areas. Starting from a 2D layout and from some benchmarks, this architectural visualization project aims to show and explain this concept with an internal and an external view, made in two different conditions of light and atmosphere.

Bastia is an area placed in Casalecchio di Reno (BO), a medium-size Municipality in the Province of Bologna. It looks like an island, enclosed between the Reno River and an historical canal built in the 1360. Today it is a productive area no-longer used.

Concept The project provides a new accessibility system to the Reno river and the canal, generating 4 new districts within the area. The 4 districts are connected one to each other forming a sort of mixed network with new connections, activities and regenerated spaces, recovered from the industrial use. “Bastia is a low-impact regeneration project without land consumption: an opportunity to turn the area into a contemporary quarter. 8% 2

This is a large green area located on the riverfront; the project opens three entrances to this area and sets new equipment for sports (running, biking, rowing). From an interview with a local contractor has emerged that private owners of buildings would contribute to the regeneration, if their properties would increase their value.
Darsena PopUp Visualization project for Officina Meme [12/15-01/16] [3D modeling, rendering] [info: www.popupdarsena.com] Officina Meme is an architecture studio, founded in 2015 in Ravenna and highly specialized in urban redevelopment and activation of unused areas. Darsena PopUp is a social activation project, strongly linked to Ravenna’s harbour and to its redevelopment. The target is to build a new connection point between the Dock and the city center, creating new spaces for sport activities, cultural events and free time, integrated with commercial activities and professionel spaces. This work was made for the official presentation of the project, designed to describe the composition of spaces and to give a positive perception of the entire area, with a deep study of light and atmosphere.

Shaped by Nature Hermes design contest [04/17] [Concept, 3D modeling, rendering]
Partecipation to the graphic international design competition, organized by Hermès in collaboration with designboom, for its masculine pillar perfume line, Terre d’Hermès. Concept The logo design starts with the study of sandstone creations made by the strength of nature agents. Following the real model, nature surrounds the bottle with its shapes, in order to create the “H” icon. Surfaces found in nature are introduced in the project as a math saddle surface that develop around the bottle; this shape is divided to create lines typical of the sandstone model. The projection of the lines on the bottle produces a surrounding design that creates the “H” icon in the frontal view, combining the front and the back of the bottle. This effect is a result of a distance game between lines seen in perspective, thanks to three-dimensional base of the project. The depth effect is highlighted by the different colors used in the design: orange for the external side and grey of the internal one.
