PROPOSED OPTION 2

PROPOSED OPTION 1

TRUSTMARK CAFE - LAKE FOREST, IL This cafeteria refresh project used a simple but effective before and after technique of rendering proposed finishes over an existing photograph using photoshop. These drawings gave the client an idea of what was possible and how their space could look, without having to invest extensive amounts of time and money. Refresh renderings like this one are good conversations starters and frequently lead to implementation.

INITIAL CONCEPT CORPORATE CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT - CHICAGO, IL

10

Objective: to maximize headcount by reducing individual employee square footage, reallocate more space for group collaboration, explore the dynamic of allowing employees to work part-time from home yet still having space for them to come into the office, and create a technology-driven work space more in tune with the corporate image.

Solution: created owned and shared workstations, expanded collaborative spaces, and designed simple workstations that focused on functionality. (Because of the strong impact this design would have on the company’s corporate culture, this concept was implemented in a smaller test area to review workflow, productivity, and employee response before moving forward.)

BEFORE AFTER CORPORATE CONFIDENTIAL CLIENT - CHICAGO, IL This information security company was overflowing their outdated office space and was looking for ways to increase capacity or they risked having to relocate. The redesign was approached with Steelcase’s “Interconnected Workplace” methodology in mind. This method recognizes “...that people need to do both individual ‘I’ work and group ‘we’ work. And it also breaks the paradigm that all individual spaces should be assigned or ‘owned’ or that all group spaces should be ‘shared’.”* Utilizing this concept, the client was provided with a contemporary solution that would give them space for mobile workers (workers that spend roughly 60% of their time in the office and 40% working from home), much needed collaborative space, and would improve their head count per floor from approximately 180 to 240. The client is looking forward to complete implementation of this concept in the near future. *http://360.steelcase.com/issues/the-next-office/

GOLDBERG COURTROOM - THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL Objective: to construct a new courtroom/classroom capable of hosting the Illinois Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, and national moot court and trial advocacy competitions, while also maximizing seating capacity for daily classes, providing for accessibility, and utilizing new classroom technology. 12

Solution: designed and implemented a stadium-style classroom/ courtroom with seating capacity for 100 as well as a custom bench for seven justices. Also incorporated was jury seating, state-of-the-art audio-visual technology, automated window shades, and accessible access to the bench.

GOLDBERG COURTROOM - THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL One of the biggest challenges in designing this courtroom was the custom judge’s bench. This bench needed to accommodate hosting the Illinois Supreme Court, which has seven justices that all need to be seated at an equal height, AND national trial advocacy competitions which require that witnesses be called and be seated lower than the judge. To do this, the bench was designed with two sections that can be raised or lowered when etiquette dictates. When raised, the front of the bench is all one height and there is a continuous counter for the judges to use. When lowered, the counters in those sections drop and the black granite lowers to an appropriate height for a witness or court reporter. This courtroom has been featured in several of the university’s publications and is one of the school’s prime selling points to prospective students.

BUSINESS OFFICE, THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL Objective: to provide an open office environment that promotes communication between employees, emphasizes clear visibility from the Controller to each workstation and to the front of the office, blocks access to private spaces and secure records, and allows semiprivate interaction with visitors. 14

Solution: specified and installed five equally-sized workstations (three with transaction counters to meet with visitors), placed glass panels on the stations near the front for clear visibility, and provided a sliding door to block access to non-authorized personnel.

BUSINESS OFFICE, THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL This project utilized systems furniture to meet the client’s goals. Extensive amounts of planning went into designing functional workstations that met each employee's job related needs; some needed more storage or records, while others needed transaction counters to meet with visitors to the office. Details were extremely important as we not only specified this product, but purchased and installed it for the client as well.

15

CLASSROOM 200 & 300, THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL Objective: reduce reverberation and improve audibility in two historic classrooms with high ceilings and extensive wood paneling.

16

Solution: custom fit acoustical panels into existing wood channels so as not to lose the overall aesthetic of the rooms, and added larger acoustical panels above to further reduce standing sound waves.

CLASSROOM 200 & 300, THE JOHN MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL - CHICAGO, IL This project required extensive field measures and strict attention to detail. Because every panel varied slightly in size, each panel was given a code that correlated it to its specific location. There were over 500 panels that covered these two rooms, and every one fit perfectly. Smaller panels were hung with velcro and larger panels with z-clips. The overall reduction in sound reverberation was a huge success, and both faculty and students were extremely pleased with results. 17

SECOND FLOOR

GENKI - JAPANESE RESTAURANT (CAPSTONE) - OKLAHOMA CITY, OK The concept of Genki Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar focuses on the most basic characteristics of the Japanese architectural style of sukiya. This style includes delicate proportions, the ample use of natural materials, and a general sense of quiet elegance with rustic overtones. Moderation is of key importance. In addition to the lack of ostentation, the sukiya environment strives, not to overwhelm, but rather to harmonize with the human scale and human sense perception. Genki is a modern interpretation of traditional Japanese dining. Genki in Japanese literally translates as “fine”, but is also used by many foreigners in Japan to describe people. A "genki person" is generally cool, interesting, and likable. 18

GENKI - JAPANESE RESTAURANT (CAPSTONE) - OKLAHOMA CITY, OK This two-story Japanese restaurant features a sushi bar, a sakÊ bar, a combination of private tables and communal seating, koragari seating (low tables with recessed footwells), a premiere chef’s table, intimate private dinning on the second level, open kitchen and banquet room. The finishes, furniture, and lighting all incorporate a rustic yet modern simplicity. 19

GENKI - NIGHTCLUB (CAPSTONE) - OKLAHOMA CITY, OK The concept of Genki Nightclub: is based on the Japanese goddess Benzaiten. She is the goddess of everything that flows: water, words, eloquence, and music. Her temples and shrines are almost invariably in the neighborhood of water -- the sea, a river, or a pond. She is the patroness of music, the fine arts (dancing, acting, visual), and good fortune in general. She is said to have a jewel that grants desires.

20

GENKI - NIGHTCLUB (CAPSTONE) - OKLAHOMA CITY, OK This night club is located on the third floor above the Genki restaurant and features a private entrance, a glass landing on the stairway over a koi pond, a private elevator, a glowing bubble bar, dance floor, raised DJ booth, recessed lounge pit, booth seating, bar seating, private champagne booths, and a VIP area with private entrance. All of the finish materials, furniture, and lighting reflect a flowing, magical, and bejeweled oasis fit for a goddess. 21
