Buenos Aires, a city of rich historic culture, is currently under the avalanche of rapid urbanization. Located near the city’s center, Palermo is one of the city’s densest and most historic neighborhoods. Current expansive construction, to accommodate the area’s growing population, disregards the city’s history by removing existing single-story ground floor structures making way for single use high-rise apartment buildings. Having this type of structure in the site ignites the opportunity to embrace the city’s existing fabric into the design while providing the additional living space above, needed for a growing area.

Idea Adding retail to the ground floor, the building uses the first two levels as public space by carving an outer block void as an amenity to the existing neighborhood activity. Due to Palermo’s high living costs, the building divides into two masses in response to affordability. On one side, seven stacked studio apartments offer lower living costs, and four two-story lofts, adjacent, provide double story units for luxury living. While shifting the balconies in the corner brings passive shading to the living spaces below, it also generates a dynamic ambiance for the inhabitants and pedestrians by responding to the horizontal lines of extension of both sides of the street.

Balconies Utilizing the balconies as elements to interweave with the building also serves to break the partition wall that separate the units. The program allows the flexibility of an open floor plan for the living spaces to bring uninterrupted views from within.

This project establishes the forgotten relationship between shopping and making. The building combines a traditional manufacturing facility with a storefront, design center, living units, and external distribution center. Through the design center customers are able to design their own shoes through circulating the perimeter of the building, while viewing the manufacturing process, an often clandestine operation.

Site The Saigon River was once the portal for industry for Ho Chi Mihn City. Traditionally, due to the availability of cheap land and labor, manufacturing has been relocated to rural areas to fit the high demand of export. Reintroducing a shoe manufacturing facility, Vietnam’s second greatest export, into District 1, a thriving city center, provides the opportunity to rethink the city’s interaction with the mass production of shoes.

Idea On the ground floor the building footprint spills towards the private courtyard as an oasis for gathering activity of the tourist area. The Do It Yourself design center where customers are able to design their own shoes provides the opportunity to take part in the experience of making. Living units adhere above the shoe store suited for the facility’s staff.

ARCHITECTURE CENTER HOUSTON: ANNEX

Tranquility Park, located in the heart of Downtown Houston’s theatre district, consists of two blocks connected by an underpass on Rusk Street. The proposed architecture archive and exhibition center will occupy the smaller block serving as annex to the Architecture Center Houston at Bayou Place. Building the site on an existing park provided an opportunity to enhance and expand public interaction in the space.

Idea Elevating and creating a circular exhibition space around the site, with an open atrium, encourages exploration by the downtown activity and park visitors. A cafe and bookstore used as anchors, on the ground level, serve as public nodes to bring views to pedestrians of the exhibition activity above. These views create a dialogue between architectural and public exhibitions and the activities of urban life. Site

NASA SPACECRAFT MUSEUM

CLEAR LAKE

The NASA Spacecraft Museum pays homage to the rich relationship between the city of Houston and the U.S. space program. Retired rockets, artifacts, and a shuttle are displayed in chronological order telling the story of U.S.’s endeavors into space. The opportunity to create an iconic symbol to bring pride to the Houston community is the inspiration for the project.

A tram tour of the Johnson Space Center campus is provided for the high volume of visitors. The site currently houses the Saturn V rocket however although it is situated a comfortable walking distance from the visitors center, there is no path to allow the opportunity to approach the site by foot.

Idea The heart of the museum lies in creating a sublime spatial quality evoking a feeling of the beyond and space exploration throughout the exhibition spaces. Programing the tram to intersect the building and placing a grand staircase creates a sense of arrival and departure for visitors. Framing the courtyard to stage the sky and interpreting the openings as portals enhance the viewing of the giant ships and artifacts.

Portals The design embraces the idea of portals to frame the views of the rockets from the outside and to stage them against the sky from within. A parametric tool was used to construct skylights as small portals of light showering with light patterns throughout the largest exhibition space where the Saturn V rocket and capsule float. This creates an otherworldly ambiance filling the space with playful rays of light.

At the College of Architecture’s Community Design Resource Center, with the contributions of student work, we brainstormed comprehensive strategies and tactics in an effort to improve the quality of life in selected under-served super neighborhoods of the Houston area. Through creating diagrams, illustrations and layout assistance for the book, Collaborative Community TRINI T TR RINIT RINITY R T Y Design Initiative 2: Islands, I was able to play a strong role in providing information to community stakeholders. The book provides strategies to better tie each community utilizing the existing landscape as a canvas for a UNTERWOOD U WOOD UNTERWOOD U final vision for each community.
