Sitting and reasoning with a seven year

old skateboarder, to the untrained eye, may seem to hold little to no relevance. But with the understanding that this new generation of up and comers is exactly where our attention needs to be, the term “out of the ordinary” gets the “out of” dropped right out of it.

To a certain extent, yes, the heckling of groms must commence in our society of boarders. As you may know, far too often in our line of work these seemingly harmless hecklings can lead to the demise or unnecessary setback in a young surfer or skater’s progression. Where does one draw the line? Some kids are savage and some are sensitive. Often times, where your little brother, sister, son or daughter falls in board-mania categorization has yet to be determined. So with that in mind, keeping a neutral-slash-positive-influence seems like a good call... True? A little light-hearted heckling can go a long way in some cases; as can positive direction and influence. But where do you stand when the path under your feet is a razor’s edge?

Main thing; whether you’re the Grinch or Gandhi, being mindful and conscious when the future is in your hands is a good call!!!

Maddnesss in the soup spoon. The only skatepark in the world that gets hyphy enough and dangerous enough to be named Derby. When the steam fires up and the crowd gets rollin, these slippery tagged up walls of concave are notoriously tretrious. Professional skateboarders attempting to achieve insane feats of faith and agility while dodging and ollieing over groms and novices. When there is any more than two people skating here, things will start getting sketchy. The park was built for speed and locals know how to get it. There was a time when it was the only skatepark in Santa Cruz. Beaten down and built back up again, this skatepark will live forever in Skateboarding history. From the Legends that learned here to the groms that live here, Derby will always be respected... Or else! See page 36 for info on the Derby Tree Massacre.
