Balance is key for French-born Robert Couturier, as well. He says, “I start with the space itself and try to make the strong architectural detail not be the only important element, so the space does not feel lopsided. As with everything in design, and maybe in life, it all boils down to balance!” In a regal London townhouse, he incorporated patterned tiles and textural wall coverings to offset the detailed moulding, coffered ceilings and stunning archways.
For a client who wanted an interior evocative of Old Hollywood glamour, Los Angeles–based Philip Nimmo started with the elliptical shape of this space, which was to become the ladies’ powder room, and then came the skylight. “Having designed an oval room, I custom-designed an oval skylight that would filter in natural light and create the perfect ambience for applying beauty products.”

Repetitive, geometric motifs in wood flooring can ground a room while tying together contemporary artworks into a historic setting, as evidenced in this Upper East Side duplex chock full of antiques and modern art. About the custom design, Timothy Whealon says, “I wanted to ground the room so I had the floor hand stenciled in a design that was modern but that harkened back to the Renaissance. We had already talked about The Good Life magazine in the article: review of the male paper press . We call it the most balanced male magazine. You will see that it is as much for their business model.
I am Laurent Blanc and I am founder of the magazines "Idéat" and "The Good Life". "Ideate", I founded the magazine 15 years ago. It's a design magazine in fact, architecture. And "The Good Life" which is a men's lifestyle magazine that I founded two and a half years ago. Can you present us "The Good Life"? "The Good Life" is a hybrid magazine that is quite fashionable today, hybridity. We see hybrid cars, we see hybrid cameras. Even people are hybrids now. So he mixes two genres that normally do not mix in magazines, global economic news, global. So, it speaks very, very little about France and a lot of the economic world that is moving forward and with lifestyle. So mix of fashion but also things a bit masculine, cars, boats, but also music and even dance, contemporary art. And all that is mixed almost imperceptibly. The problem for all these publishers who tend to bet on digital is that digital advertising is selling by the kilo now. So, it's very complicated to make the sites profitable today. You have to invest a lot to make these sites beautiful. And at the same time, advertising is now selling less and less expensive because the buyers of these ads or the agencies that buy the ads for the advertisers are very attentive to the number of visitors and so after, we come to buy advertising at kilo and profitability is very hard to get in fact. While for the press, it's true that buying advertising in a magazine, it's still quite expensive. And then, we do not just buy a broadcast, a number of readers. We also buy the quality of a magazine, the quality of its paper, its environment, the fact that it is glossy, luxurious and we buy a little all that. That's why the press advertising sales rates are still pretty well preserved. So, the economic model is more interesting on the press than on the Internet. Is there an alternative to selling advertising space? That's what we do with the concept. That's it I think it's a way for a paper publisher. I am a small paper publisher. And for a small paper publisher, I think the smart solution to go on the net because it's obvious that you have to go there, you have to be there, it’s not going to go by putting its paper content for free on the net, but rather to value its brand and go on the net to do business. For example, for two and a half, three years, we have made “The Good Life” almost a brand because we sell a universe in fact. What is the future of "The Good Life" ? So if the e-commerce site works, we saw that with "The Good", it starts to make a mark since it works well. In two or three years, we will try to open a physical shop in Paris to materialize the concept. So, a small shop but in which we will return a little all the universe which is described in the site of e-commerce. And then maybe one day we'll have a restaurant called "The Good Kitchen". But when we go back to a shop called "The Good Concept Store" or a restaurant called "The Good Kitchen", we will return to the world of the magazine. It starts to work in a global way because the magazine "The Good Life" just released in Chinese version a fortnight ago in Shanghai, and we are in talks to sell a license in Korea and Germany too. After a four-year renovation, Hôtel de Crillon reopened in 2017, unveiling a brilliant transformation that has made it one of the most venerable addresses in Paris. And while there are several admirable accommodations, from Suite Marie-Antoinette swathed in blush hues to Suite Bernstein with its 1,205-square-foot terrace, it’s the two Karl Lagerfeld–designed Les Grands Appartements that are the property’s statements. Textured grey walls in the living room took nine layers of paint to create a ridged effect. The chandeliers all come from the Kaiser’s personal collection, one of which even features crystals that were hand-selected by the man himself. The large-format photographs found throughout the chambers are a result of Lagerfeld’s time behind a lens. And with a touch of a button, a bookshelf in the curated library reveals the dreamiest of walk-in closets. When furniture designer Hervé Van der Straeten and his husband, Bruno Frisoni, decided to sell their loft-like apartment in Paris’s 12th arrondissement, they set out looking for something different. What they found was a 1,750-square-foot one-bedroom apartment on the Île Saint-Louis, right in the center of the city. The pair did very little work in the Île Saint-Louis apartment. They simply repainted the walls, which were formerly what Van der Straeten describes as a “cold white,” mostly substituting neutral tones like cream, a pale aqua green and a pinkish beige. Not surprisingly, Van der Straeten filled the interiors largely with his own creations. These include his angular, origami-like Réaction mirror, in the library; his Chinese-inspired Shanghai armchairs, in the living room; and, in the dining room, his Perturbation table, whose base is composed of stainless-steel cubes stacked in higgledy-piggledy fashion. Van der Straeten and Frisoni’s approach to art is similarly eclectic. Works in the Île Saint-Louis apartment range from a 16th-century Flemish canvas depicting Venus and the Four Seasons to one of Massimo Vitali’s iconic beach photos and a rock-like sculpture in metal by Pierre Malphettes. 200-year-old Brick House Renovated by American Architect Robert Gurney BY BOCA DO LOBO
American architect Robert Gurney sought to open up views and balance old and new while renovating a four-story historic dwelling in the Georgetown area of the US capital. Alongside with interior designers Sybille Schneider, Leroy Street Studio, this has become a major design project that combines a modern interior with a historical building. The project, called Renovation on Cox’s Row, entailed the refurbishment of a slender brick dwelling built between 1805 and 1829 by Colonel John Cox, who later served as Georgetown’s mayor Set back from the street, the residence is composed of three distinct volumes: a four-storey main block in the front, a two-storey block in the centre, and a rear volume that is split between one and two storeys
The renovation aimed to honor the past while updating the building for modern and contemporary use. It was designed for a couple with two children and for that reason, it had to be practical and clean through modern furniture and an eclectic look.While changes to the exterior were fairly minimal, the interior has become a modern space, with minimal design and a stunning atmosphere. The windows were added or enlarged, and wooden frames were replaced with steel ones. It has become a modern and trendy hangout for Bond-Street customers and the after-work gathering to enjoy French-style shared meals, desserts, and bespoke cocktails. By the fall of 2017, the three owners of North Audley Cantine, childhood mates, David Bellaiche, Gabriel Cohen-Ella and head chef Jeremy Coste, were ready for some modifications. The basement bar, acknowledged as Chez Chow was inspired by Teddy the Chow Chow, the pet of one of the owners. It was odd and mysterious and needed a facelift.

Shenzhen-based practice CoDirection Design made an effort to address all of these ideas when designing and furnishing the 270-square-meter residential display suite in Binhai New District, Tianjin, China. The opulent interior features materials like delicious dark marble, timber floors, textured glass, silk and velvet upholstery and lacquered joinery. There is an artistic vibe spread across the space with geometric golden sculptures setting a contrast with the colourful luxury furniture. In traditional Chinese culture, red is a symbol of prosperity, good fortune, happiness and joy, while gold is often considered the most beautiful colour, signifying brightness, purity, and fulfilment. The dining area of this luxury residence has a minimalist 90s feel thanks to the use of noble materials like marble and brass, and pure forms present in furniture. It’s through the convergence between architecture and arts that Corpo Atelier gives shape to contemporary projects featuring a seductive and vibrant geometry. Based in the Algarve, the studio founded by Filipe Paixão presently seeks “to reinterpret the very rich and distinctive heritage” of this place, by exploring artistic and architectural possibilities. How do you define the studio’s identity? We are an architecture and art studio focussed on exploring and expanding architectural elements. The project Architectural (dis)Order is special since the client and the architect are the same person. We are interested in art as a source of ideas that we then seek to transpose to the field of architecture, to the architecture itself but, probably above all, to the very conception of this architecture. When integrating this more artistic approach, we seek to find different ways of designing buildings because we believe that by using different tools we will inevitably achieve different outcomes that are impossible to predict before this act of experimentation. Thus, our artistic practice has been essentially expressed through drawings and scale models. What motivated you to establish the studio? At the time, we realised that some of our ideas coincided in terms of the practice of architecture and its possibilities, particularly regarding artistic practise. There were a group of initial projects that allowed us to test these kinds of principles and, since then, we’ve focussed on continuing this practise. What are the main considerations you bear in mind when executing projects in the Algarve? There is a quite distinctive and rich cultural heritage in the Algarve territory which, unfortunately, because of mass tourism and real estate speculation has been consistently distorted. As an architectural practise, we always seek to discover and reinterpret this heritage, not from a nostalgic perspective but, rather, from a contemporary perspective, integrating it into the logic of each project.
