DOMOCATALYST Domo Catalyst is designed to attract the creative energies and ideas in order to stimulate, improve and enlighten them and then to send them back in a new better way. The building acts the epicenter of innovation in Leuna industrial park. The proposal introduces a new type of landscape different form the existing industrial context. The public space is designed as a green amphitheater converging towards the building and drawing people to it. In turn, the building absorbs the users dispensing them around a central core which contains the laboratories and research and development facilities. Adjacent to this nucleus the horizontal and vertical circulations engage the energies, encouraging the interaction and the sparks resulting between them. Innovation occurs at the boundary between different entities, spaces and users. Although apparently rigid, the central core dissipates increasingly into the mass of the building, as the limits between the spaces become more and more blurry and the interactions between the users get more and more complex. At the uppermost level the core becomes a central garden having a role in the illumination and ventilation. In the basement the technical spaces as well as the lockers are found. From here the clean corridor branches out towards the laboratories and research areas.

The access level ensures the distribution of all types of users, both stuff and visitors and the most part of the laboratory and the technicum areas. The first floor acts as a level of contact between laboratory and office workers as well as visitors, hosting all the spaces destined to events, meetings and brainstorming. The interaction between people is encouraged by the play areas – places that push the boundaries of the workspace and help increase productivity- along with the cafeteria and the informal library. At the second floor the office spaces are oriented towards the central garden in order to ease communication and teamwork and ensure a visual connection all across the floor. The vertical connection between floors is possible through a series of terraces and double height spaces which offer a dynamic perception. The energies catalyzed by the building should not be restrained to its limits. Everybody says ‘think outside the box’, but the thing is there is no box. Domo Catalyst is a shape shifting building, a vibrant element always perceived differently made out of unique twisting ribbons inspired by the structure of polymers.

ILLUMINATION PRINCIPLE

DOMES

The building is placed in a thoughtful way, with full consideration to the resulting orientation. The volume takes a diagonal position in relation to the north-south axis, so that no facade is fully oriented towards the north or the south. This allows for a uniform lighting of the interior spaces and prevents overheating. The double facade system filters the heating factor while keeping the interior spaces properly lit.

ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING

The aim is to create a reduced built footprint, a threeside green amphitheatre as an entrance device, as well as a plaza, that help create an oasis in the heart of the industrial park. The green roof helps control the interior temperature and is covered by 900 m2 of photovoltaic panels, which contribute, together with the national system to the electric supply.

The air flow principle is applied to both the facade system and to the overall interior space, so that the interior temperature is more easily controlled.
