furniture design: wooden lamp the focus of this design was jointing, the lamp is made from poplar for the shade and cherry for the base. it was intentional that no metal fasteners were used, as i thought it would have taken away from the essence of the joints that make the lamp what it is.

WOODEN BOAT

group project to assemble a wooden boat from existing construction documents. my main role was to cut to scale the ribs of the boat and sand them. the boat was held together mainly using glue and wooden dowels. the boat was completed in about 4 weeks and tested in the river.

analysis of ‘the matrix’

5

the movie has two worlds, a real world and simulated/virtual world, the latter called ‘the matrix.’ it is a design created by someone who felt they were responding to a problem. so the movie is not only a representation of reality, but also a representation of a representation, which i find quite interesting. design is the essence of what architecture is, to create from the mind. neo, one of the main characters, had to learn how to free his mind in order to fulfill the prophecy of being ‘the one.’ the challenge for this project was to take an existing film, analyze it, write a short paper and create a collage to represent how the film relates to architecture. i chose to show the aspect of the film that was aesthetically pleasing and pushed the boundaries of what was normative in film, with the use of technology. it is with this same notion architects and designers use computers, different softwares and machines as extension of our minds to create what we envision for a particular project.

HVAC CASE STUDY the aim of this project was to calculate efficiency of the HVAC system of an existing building. this was a group project, the roles were rotated between members so that each person could have an understanding of the different aspects of the project. my main role however was to coordinate the graphics.

conceptual library project

this design was based on having two separate structure that come together at a central point to celebrate a special moment. this moment, is that part of the library that holds archived materials and/or prized books. the idea was to have a space frame structure, that would conform to the fluid movement of what the building demanded.

7

bascule bridge dwelling reinterpreting a bascule bridge operator’s dwelling, based on the notion of a machine. the idea was to have the operator’s dwelling controlled by the movement of the bridge. in other words, his dwelling would rise as the bridge is being opened, by a simple machine system.

the dwelling rotates while being lifted and is locked in place at the ends when it is at its final point. it goes back to its normal position whenever the bridge is again closed.

FORT LAUDERDALE 2060 - WATER CITY

9

this project was based on an conceptual urban situation. the scenario is that in the year 2060, there will be a water level rise of 6 feet. this rise will cause most of the existing land to be inundated and some of the existing buildings would have become inhabitable. the challenge was to have a design that would deal with the problem. the approach i took was to create a structure in the water, because i felt it was of vital importance to preserve the land that was left. so the solution is to hae a mixed use city in a building, out in the water.

mangroves protect coastal areas from erosion, storm surge (especially during hurricanes) and adapt themselves to overcome issues having to do with frequent tidal inundation. the skin of the proposed structure acts in this capacity in event that the water level should keep rising. the building’s “root system” will be efficient at dissipating wave energy, which will protect the outer facade and occupants of the structure. the “roots” then grow into the structural skin, which encompasses the building to provide the stability for this water city.

the context of the site creates contradictory notions. the hard built forms on teh west side of the river and the soft landscape on the east. the river act as the axis for this dichotomy while seamlessly blending it all together. it is with this idea that the built form was perceived. the capsulated “blob form is teh mediator between the two more platonic forms; heavy vs light, natural vs artificial, black vs white. and so a strong tention is created. th form steps down from the side facing the bridge to break down the massiveness of teh bridge. the structure is mostly covered on the south side and opened to the north facing the natural park. the proposed design seeks to show and balance the opposed dynamism.

THE SITE WAS SMALL, SO THE INTENTION WAS TO HAVE A STRUCTURE THAT WULDN’T GET LOST AMONG THE SURROUNDING BUILDINGS AND KEEP ITS UNIQUENESS AT THE SAME TIME.

7

9

THE ORIENTAITON OF THE DESIGN WAS BASED OFF AN AXIS THAT WOULD LINK THE ADRIENNE ARSHT CENTER AND AN EXISTING MUSEUM, TWO OF TEH MORE PROMINENT BUILDINGS IN THE CONTEXT. IT ALSO TOOK ADVANTAGE OF SOUTH FLORIDA’S PREVAILING WINDS.

11

7

SINCE IT IS A MUSEUM OF ARCHITECTURE, I THOUGHT EXPOSING A LOT OF HOW THE BUILDING WORKS WAS CRUCIAL TO THE DESIGN. HENCE THE BUILDING EXHIBITS TRANSPARENCY.

PROFESSIONAL WORK

15 while working at a major structural engineering firm in the boca raton area, i took part in numerous design projects. my main roles were to draw from scratch engineer’s designs, correct redlines, make plot sets, coordinate drawings with other firm partners etc. here is an example of one of the projects i helped draft.
