HYBRID MIXED-USE HOUSING PROJECT 2011. ARCHITECTURE GRAPHIC DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHY 3D VISUALIZATION TECHNICAL STUDIES

HYBRID - HOUSING PROJECT

Project Type: Academic Year: 2011 Intervention: Design Proposal Description: A 5.3 acres site, located in Chicago at the corner of Halsted and Clybourn, was given to develop a mixed-use

project that would include three different types of housing (High, Mid and Low Rises) with aprox. 530 units in toal, commercial space, a museum and at least 30% of green space.

Chicago is a city with more than 9 million people and an area of approximately 6,900 square miles. Each year it keeps growing and spreading even more. This urban sprawl is taking over the rural area and decreasing the ecological footprint that is very important to preserve the planet, the especies and even for us. The rural area lost from 1982 to 1992 in the US was equivalent to Maine and New Hampshire while the equivalent of Ohio was lost during 1992 to 1997. Calculations show that by 2050 the area lost would be almost as half the East Coast of the US. Images and Data Source: - US Department of Transportation http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/ - http://chil.us/

CITY

HYBRID The project consists of a variety of programs that would combine to merge the chararcteristics of urban living and the suburbs. A residential tower is extruded in the north part of the site to accomodate the majority of the housing units. This provides great sunlight distribution and a maximization of the views as well as a low shading impact over the site. The rest of the housing is distributed on the East and West wings providing other housing options. The East wing is only residential responding to the character of Clybourn St. The West wing is a combination of programs with a mutation from residential (at the north) to a museum (on the south) passing through office space and hotel. This was ment as a evolution from private to semi-public/public. The two wings are elevated to reduce the building footprint and to allow a neighborhood infill over the site. The site itself would provide green space for public activities as well as some commercial like restaurants and a grocery store.

HOW Create a sustainable project that combines the best of the suburbs living (Sun, Air, Views and Green Space) with the best of the city living (Proximity, Population Density and Programmatic Diversity).

The building has different points of access. The main entrance is located at the base of the tower while other 4 access points are distributed along the wing and serve as entrances to the different programs held by the hybrid.

STRUCTURAL STUDIES

Steel is used for the structure using bracing members to help hold the lifted building over a set of cores and columns.

The 720,00 sf site is located in Evanston, IL at the intersection of Main St and Dodge St. The neighborhood is quite residential with a school adjacent to the site on the east side.

BOTTOM OF SITE

The project requires a building with a significant diversity on the program including several activities from a ice hockey to a community library.

BENDING

REACHING OUT

The building was pushed to the bottom of the site to create a strong presence on Main St, the principal road of access to the site.

MAIN

SPACE

CIRCULATION

GENERATION

ACCESS POINTS

Extending the building to reach out the corners and create a connection with both sides, East and West, specially the corner of Main and Dodge which is the most important and noticeable among the four corners.

The long stripe was then modified and bended creating ‘INs’ and ‘OUTs’ to generate a strong character that would invite pedestrians into the b uilding and the site as well as generate spaces for programming and appropriation.

The stripe was maintain defining the main circulation path throughout the building. The modifications and cuts created spaces that would pop out of the main stripe generating the space required for each program definition and getting highlighted and differentiated from the rest of the building. The negative space resulting from these cuts gives the sense of inviting people into the building defining the point for accessing the building.

CTA BLUE LINE DIVISION STATION

Project Type: Academic (In collaboration with Jyoti Mahil Shah and Edward Meunier) Year: 2010 Intervention: Design Proposal Description: This project proposed a new train station for the CTA Blue Line Division stop. The station would provide access

not only to the Blue Line trains but also to the future Circle Line trains. The intent for the project was to create a unique experience for the users by merging the identity of the CTA as Chicago’s main transportation system, and the image and feeling of Wicker Park, the neighborhood where the station is located.

Entrance:

Mezzanine:

A rare shape would create the entrance and would stand out from the rest of the buildings. This would make the station be easily located and remembered. Inviting, clear signage and with a clear representation of the identity of the community. Where the experience begins.

Is where the two end points connect and meet. Should be a open, wide space with a clear layout. Transparency and “see through” is very important for an easy understanding of the space. Various amenities (art expression, cafe) can be found here where the identity of the neighborhood is represented but with a feeling of a more controlled public space (safe, branded, healthy).

Platforms:

The platforms should have a clear, understandable layout. Visibility is a must for security reasons and to improve the experience. Good signage and guidance. Safe and controlled environment. It is where the experience begins.

Plaza: The entrance should be part of a bigger public “free” space where the identity of the neighborhood is embeded. This would attract the people and generate appropriation.

Circulation: ADA accessible. Clear and guided circulation in and out of the station.

Circulation: ADA accessible. Clear and guided circulation in and out of the station.

LITTLE VILLAGE COMMUNITY CENTER 2010. ARCHITECTURE GRAPHIC DESIGN PHOTOGRAPHY 3D VISUALIZATION TECHNICAL STUDIES

LITTLE VILLAGE COMMUNITY CENTER

Project Type: Academic Year: 2010 Intervention: Design Proposal Description: Little Village is a neighborhood in the south west side of Chicago with a population of 91,065. It is the most

dense neighborhood in the city. Eighty-three percent of the people in Little Village are hispanic and most of them are Mexicans. It is the place where most Mexicans immigrate to the city. It is also a very young neighborhood in the sense that most of the population is in their 20’s. This has increased the demand for good schools, parks, social services and youth programs. LVEJO is a non-profit organization that has focused their efforts on getting the site at 31st St and Sacramento Ave revitalized and regenerated for a park and a center that serves the community of Little Village. This is an attempt for a proposal on the community center.

Program: LVEJO worked with the community to create a program that would fit their demands. Children from the community

were an important influence in the project and they were the ones who came up with the list for the program. Our task was to filter this list to make the foundation of the project.

CENTRAL POINT GATHERING

WEAVE DIAGRAM

The weave creates a unique relationship between the programs and the circulation.

In elevation, the weave shows how a central point is created generating gathering.

ADJUSTED RESPONDING TO SITE

WEAVE APPLIED TO THE SITE

The weave concept applied to the site defined by W 31st St in the South, S Sacramento Ave in the East and the Park in the North side.

SKIN MEXICAN WEAVE

The yellow arrows are fixed to help get the people from the corner of 31st and Sacramento to the park. This creates a welcoming space that would guide the visitors as well. A big, open space creates the idea of “see through” the building so people from the outside can see the park at the opposite end. The woven programs are generated from this central space making circulation and access very clear to visitors.

PATTERN IN SKIN

The diamond is called the “Universal Design” in the Mayan culture and it is very popular in their weaves. The image at the far left is a typical design. The the four sides of the diamond represent the boundaries of space and time. The small diamonds in each corner are the cardinal points: east on top where the sun rises, west at the bottom for the end of the day, north on the left and south on the right. Often the east and west sides are colored blue to represent the Caribbean Sea to the east and Pacific Ocean to the west. At times a thin yellow line connecting east to west shows the sun's path across the sky.

SOUTH ELEVATION NORTH ELEVATION

The weave concept is also applied in the facade to generate the urban character of the building. It emphasizes the entrance to the building at 31st and shows, at the opposite end, the exit/entrance to the park.

CIRCULATION DIAGRAMS

The weave concept applied to the program and circulation of the building. The inner spaces are woven and a central area is created. This space is used to get the people from the corner of Sacramento and 31st to the park passing through a building with woven programs. The circulation and access appears in a clear way along the central area.

The image above shows a typical interior space of the building. The metal screen provides shade and also frame the views from the interior of the building. In this particular situation, furniture is placed in a corner of the library to create a lounge type space for users to read and study.

GATHERING POINT

A lounge is created when uniting the two stairs. It becomes a small public area that invites people to relax, read, re even study. Short walls define the area giving a sense of enclosure. Soft seating encourages people to relax and enjoy the interior spaces that the building has to offer.
