Succ1nct for solo viola (2011), op. 3, lives up to its name as a work that lasts for approximately 1-minute. It is a fast, propulsive work composed of a single disjunct line that implies a D major pitch collection. In the middle of the work, the musical unfolding locks into an unexpected quotation of the main idea from Beethoven’s Sixth Symphony, movement 3, starting from bar 24. The work then returns to a vigorous and contemporary post-modernist spirit as it had begun. It is music about music: a tip of the hat to a revered composer centuries removed.
