ladies page This year saw us hosting the third annual “Battle of the Potjie Kings” where 9 teams went head-to-head to compete for the title and bragging rights of being the ultimate Potjie champions! Luckily for all involved, this year saw splendid weather with plenty of sunshine and minimal wind, providing the ideal conditions for cooking up Potjiekos. The 9 teams that competed were: • HDCCT men • HDCCT ladies • The Free Chapter • H.O.G.® Cape Town Chapter • H.O.G.® Tyger Valley Chapter • H.O.G.® Breede River Chapter • NAFI Chapter • Harley-Davidson® Tyger Valley • SOGS • Green Team

The earliest team to hit the scene (and winner of the Team Spirit award) was the H.O.G.® Tyger Valley Chapter, who had their fires burning before 7am! Not long after that, the NAFI Chapter arrived and from there the teams came pouring in. The smell of fire was thick in the air by 8:30am and soon after that, the smell of various spices, onion and meat filled the nostrils of everyone passing by. Pots ranged from traditional Moroccan, to lamb knuckles, curry and more. What a feast! Each team gave it their all and by the time the judges arrived, all 9 were ready to present their potjies in their own unique way. A massive thank-you to our independent judges for making the time to come and be a part of this annual event! They were: Henry Steel (renowned musician in his own right and session guitarist for Karen Zoid amongst others), Stèfan Meintjes (qualified chef and owner of Die Damhuis restaurant in Melkbos) and KC Royal (lead singer and guitarist for The Ratrod Cats as well as a self-proclaimed master braaier). The Tyger Tavern upstairs in our dealership put great effort into making rice and pap for everyone as well as keeping visitors hydrated

throughout the day. A special mention to the team from Durbanville Craft Breweries for having a van outside to make sure that potjie team members were kept hydrated too! H.O.G.® Breede River Chapter won the “Best Dressed Table” award for their Moroccan setup which saw the judges sitting in a curtained booth on a carpeted floor around a small table, being served their potjie in magnificent crockery while incense burned in the background. A special mention to the H.O.G.® Cape Town Chapter who competed for the first time this year and went all out with their décor too! The team to snatch the title of Potjie Kings for 2018 was the HDCCT Ladies team! Congratulations and well-deserved! The ladies made an authentic Moroccan pot with dried apricots and finished it off with a homemade Moroccan dessert of semolina cake that had pine nuts and hints of orange in it. Thank you to each team that took part and thank you to every person that stopped by to enjoy the fun with us! We trust that you’ll all be back again next year for great food and great company!

may ride 2018 As I was riding on the N1 through the dip under the R300 flyover I looked into my mirror at the glorious sight of 30 Harleys following me and I thought to myself it’s a wonderful world. Once again we were grateful for such awesome support for the club ride. The weather could not have been more perfect for a ride. The agreed rendezvous for the start was at the Tyger Valley Dealership, who are great supporters of our club, to depart at 10h30. Once again the anxiety of hoping members arrive to support the ride was enormous. At 10h00 we had 6 bikes and to our great relief you guys poured in and we ended with around 30 bikes and 40 people. Wow, thank you!! It was a mystery ride with a drinks stop at Buena Vista on the R44. We had purposely planned a reasonably short and simple route there to test a new riding discipline we wanted to introduce to our rides to try and prevent the big gaps and splits in the group that we experienced on our last ride in April. It is a very simple discipline in that the

person leading the ride rides at 110kmh to lessen the concertina effect at the back and that each person is responsible for the person directly behind them. This is actioned by making sure at all times you can see the person’s headlights behind. If you lose their headlight, you slow down until you see them again and then proceed. If this is applied by the whole group then should one bike stop with a problem those behind it will stop and those ahead will gradually all stop and if there is then a long delay it will be obvious there is an issue somewhere in the group but we will at least be all together. The other discipline we wanted to check out is navigating town traffic in a pack. Lane splitting was tried and it worked like a charm with us all eventually getting through the traffic and those in front waiting when they had an appropriate spot for the others to catch up. Another plan was to have a bike wait on the road at the entrance of Buena Vista to make sure we all got the entrance as it was

mystery ride 2018 a little tricky on the right on a very dangerous R44. We all arrived within minutes of each other with mostly broad smiles. The beers and drinks went down like homesick moles and the hour allocated to the stop flew by. Lunch was announced to be at the Brass Bell and we had a reservation for 13h00 and we needed to scurry out of there by 12h30 at the latest. We formed up as a group and set off in a noisy pack to Kalk Bay via the Baden Powell coastal road. I was a little apprehensive about this road given recent unrest on the N2 but my apprehension was unwarranted and the ride could not have been finer. No wind and fast moving traffic made the ride an absolute pleasure and the crystal clear views of False Bay were breath taking. The inevitable traffic through Muizenberg and Main Road to Kalk Bay was there in all its glory but we made our way through it thanks to mostly courteous drivers

with windows open envious of our freedom and noisy machines and once again arrived and the world famous Brass Bell within minutes of each other. The Brass Bell spoilt us with the best seats in the house and lunch turned into a glorious affair with much nourishment and hydration taking place. The perfect end to a fabulous ride. Some went to Cape to Cuba after lunch for added hydration and a melody or two but I had stuff to do so Brad and I set off on a spirited ride home to Somerset West once again back along the coastal road to get home safely around 16h00. All round about 230 odd Km ridden for the day and from the comments at lunch a most enjoyable ride was had by all. As you read this article I will very fortunately be at the Isle of Man on a bike tour to watch the TT. For the June Club ride you will be in the very capable hands of our assistant Road Captain

Dave who will take responsibility for the ride and stops etc. I am quite certain it will be a splendid affair and I’m envious of your lunch destination and proposed route. I would like to once again remind our members who are not regular riders on the monthly rides that they are really missing out. To get as much out of the club for your subs is what we as a committee strive to achieve and a big part of that is the monthly rides and overnighters so please support them when you can. You can only benefit and have fun too boot doing so. So until we ride again. I am so looking forward to my trip and promise I will at least try and think of you guys on our next club ride. All the very best and safe miles and smiles to you all. Rich, your no longer nervous at all Road Captain.

the bishops respect 1 Peter 2:17 Honour all people, love the brotherhood, fear God, honour the king. Respect, what is it? Are there rules? How do we learn it and how do we teach it? Giving respect doesn’t say anything about the person receiving it, it shows the mettle of the person giving it and that in turn earns the giver respect. When our Lord was put on the cross his whole demeanor

made him the man he is. By forgiving those that put him there he earned respect. It’s simple in its complexity. The logic will amaze you and yet, there are no rules. Last night, while sitting on my favourite chair looking out at the rain pelting down on the street below I was reminded of an event that cemented this in my mind. Bedford is a small town in the Easter Cape, so small in fact that it didn’t have a Catholic Church, but it did have a local mission. I was 22

years old, fresh out of the seminary and I had been sent there to stand in for the local priest after insinuations of infatuation by the widow Martha van Breda started to emerge resulting in her boyfriend’s aggression, causing problems in the community. Things get complicated quickly in small towns. There was only one motorcycle in the town, a chopped BSA 650. It belonged to and was the sole mode of transport for Andrey. Andrey was a big man, soft-spoken and friendly.

the bishops respect Andrey was Russian Orthodox. He had just breezed into town a few months earlier and stayed, doing odd jobs and keeping to himself. His whole demeanor made him a likeable character and his ability to fix virtually anything quickly earned him the respect of the locals. It was about a month after I arrived in Bedford that, as had become my Friday evening norm, I walked into the only pub in town, aptly it would turn out, named the Downed Drunkard. Andrey’s bike was parked outside which pleased me as our conversations usually ended up agreeing to disagree on religious rote without any malice and copious amounts of White Goose Vodka. The pub was dark, filled with the buzz of conversation and a heavy layer of smoke. An old “Somebody done somebody wrong song” was playing on the jukebox and the mood was jovial amongst the small crowd in the pub. I ordered a Whisky and surveyed the crowd. The widow Martha and her boyfriend sat at the bar with her 19 years old son between them. The kid fancied himself as a future rock star as he owned a guitar and had mastered a chord or two. I greeted them and sat

down next to Andrey. Andrey was in a particularly good mood. He had got the Van Tonder’s water pump running and been paid enough to fill his petrol tank and pay his rent. As it happens with most big quiet guys there is always someone that needs to prove himself one way or another. I hadn’t realized it before but Andrey was a target waiting to happen. Martha, the boyfriend and the kid finished their drinks and got up to leave. Martha nodded in Andrey’s direction and he said, “Cheers Martha, cheers Steve, enjoy the evening”. Just over the words of the song playing in the background and with an ever so slight hint of aggression the kid, with Dutch courage from being between 2 adults and with a few beers in his belly, exposed the chip on his shoulder with the words, “And I suppose I don’t deserve a goodbye?” Andrey stopped and after a second of indecision turned round and eyed up the kid. “I don’t play with children, I make them”, he thought, and would have left it at that had the kid not opened his mouth again. The first word of his sentence hadn’t passed his lips before a loud crack filled the room.

It was too fast for me to see but Andrey had got up and planted a flat hand to the side of the youngsters head. He went down like the aptly named pub. It was so unexpected that no one moved, even the jukebox seemed to go silent. The kid looked up at Andrey from the floor and in a high pitched voice said, “You can’t do that, it’s against the rules” Andrey sat down and in his normal soft voice said, “Lack of respect has no fucking rules!” A lesson hopefully learnt. If your parents didn’t teach you it someone one day will. The rest of the evening was pleasant. Andrey’s lesson sank in and I used it for my Sunday sermon. May the angels ride on your shoulders.

The Bishop

hangklip overnighter I was filled with pride as we pulled out of the Hickory Shack after a magnificent lunch in the sunshine and assembled as a club on the side of the road to ride to our next destination in Kleinmond for a drink stop just short of our final destination, the famous Hangklip Hotel. It is such a privilege to lead such an awesome club on any ride but even more special as we had such a lovely route still to go and had just ridden some of the best roads the Western Cape has to offer. Whilst it is a relatively short ride to Pringle Bay, Dave and I decided that we would spruce it up by including 4 passes on the ride to Hangklip and save Clarence for the hazy ride home on the Sunday. We set off from the Engen 1 Stop on the N2 at 11h00 and took a very leisurely ride through Stellenbosch and over the Hellshoogte Pass to Franschhoek. From there we rode over and down the Franschhoek Pass. This pass never

fails to impress and even in somewhat overcast conditions it was superb and the road in perfect condition with many other riders enjoying the pass with us. The lush bush of the pass a sharp contrast of what can only be described as the horror of the Theewaterskloof Dam which is now a barren landscape spreading for hundreds of square kilometres. It is a most frightening sight and Philip commented at the rest stop on the bridge that it would probably never be full again. It is so empty that the old tar road under the bridge is now completely visible. After regrouping we headed off to Grabouw and it was scary to see just how far you follow this desolated dam on your right hand side. We rode up the very beautiful Viljoens Pass and passed several dams all desperately low due to this never ending drought. Once again in contrast to the beautiful Green forests that surround them.

Hangklip overnighter The Hickory Shack is just a few kilos past Grabouw on the N2 on the left. Many said they have driven past so many times before and never had the time to stop. All were most certainly pleased with the spot and the craft beers and wine much appreciated and enjoyed by all. Most “pigged out on the house specialities of pulled pork and ribs and after a 2 hour visit we headed off to Kleinmond for drinks via the Houwhoek Pass and Botriver and then to the hotel.

After the 1.2 km of dirt just before the hotel, we all arrived with smiles and the festivities began. We had 3 members join us on their Adventure bikes and regaled to us just how much more fun they had had. Ja right.. but have to admit I was envious. To say that the hotel is in showroom condition would be an enormous exaggeration but they have with many years of neglect managed to create quite a rustic feel to the place. The rooms were cheap and cheerful and ours

was clean and comfortable. I did not hear too many complaints. The evening was the normal raucous affair of an HDCCT overnighter and once again we demonstrated being a drinking club with a biking problem. Craig Vee was once again on top form and created a massive party vibe with much dancing and singing shenanigans taking place. The evening was made more interesting with some charlatans with long fingers whom we politely showed the door and

Hangklip overnighter a very inebriated local lass who managed to pull my own inebriated self by the jacket so hard that I landed flat on my back completely knocked out. Glad to say all ended well with no long term damage. In the morning we rode in very overcast conditions down the beautiful Clarence Drive to breakfast at Tallas in Gordon’s Bay for some of us to end what was a most enjoyable and memorable overnighter. As we always say, to get the most out of your club you need to take part in as many of the club subsidised events as possible. I can honestly say that those that missed this ride and overnighter really missed out. There can be no better way to spend a weekend than riding and playing with the best damn Harley Club in the world. Looking forward to the next overnighter being the Knysna Oyster Festival which promises to

be our crown event of the year and I honestly cannot wait. We have planned an awesome ride from the Dealership on the Thursday and there will be a planned ride on the Friday for those doing the 2 nighter. There are also a few outrides and events planned for the time spent in Knysna as there is much to see and do in the surrounds not to mention the magnificent passes. Till we ride again, Rich your very proud Road Captain.

may club meeting

may meeting 2018

FROM THE CHAIRMAN Well, we are into the year in full swing now. The Knysna Oyster Festival is creeping up on us, so if there are any late entries, I hope that you beat the cut-off date of 31 May. I have to extend my hand in gratitude to Julie for organising this trip on her own. This month’s ride was exceptional. It certainly seems as though our Road Captains are turning this into a riding club. We have been busy this month in that we had the club ride, the Hangklip overnighter and the Potjie Competition at HD Tygervalley. I am proud to say that the 17 team

members of the HDCCT Potjie Queens sure pulled out all the stops, and won the competition for the day. Well done ladies. Subs are now overdue. We have given a grace period until the 31st of May. Please pay, or contact one of the committee members with regards to this subject. If there are any members who have been with the club for more than 5 years, please contact Zelda or myself and we will give you either a cloth or metal badge which is your choice. With regards to our monthly meetings, at the time of making the decision

as to where to hold the meeting, Fort Wynard was not ready for this month. We will certainly aim to hold our July meeting there. So, heres to another month of riding, however I don’t mind missing a few kilometres on the bike, in exchange for some desperately needed rain. Now, if you are out there on the roads this winter, please be safe, and keep it on the black. Cheers, Roosta
