Summary - Theory
Through thorough research into transport within Stockport, it became very clearly from an initial impression that the car had taken over the town. No matter what point of the town you were at, there was always a trace of the car creating sensory pollution to the pedestrian. Stockport is a town that through natural and human influence today consists of 3 levels, the town level, where the car runs free and the pedestrian comes second, the viaduct, where trains run from Manchester to London, and the River Mersey lying beneath them all. It was here that my project began. The River Mersey Gorge lies to the north of my chosen site, an area steeped in historical and cultural significance through it’s usage during The Industrial Revolution, yet today lies almost completely unused. From exploration of the River Mersey Gorge the only trace of human life comes in the form of a makeshift homeless encampment located underneath a cantilevered car park. I began to ask myself how the council within Stockport could allow such a magnificent area be neglected so much, the River Mersey had somehow become a barrier within Stockport, instead of what it should be, a link throughout the town. Throughout my project I have seen my scheme as the reclamation of the River Mersey Gorge, my idea being to introduce a pedestrian and cycling route along the gorge, leading from the Merseyway shopping centre under the viaduct and off to the west, while creating the opportunity to create a route that stops at my site. The National Cycle Network created by Sustrans already exists within Stockport. Route 55 travels along the River Mersey on a East/West axis, although once the route arrives within the close context of my site, the cycling network detours from it’s segregated path and makes it’s way around Stockport Bus Station before joining back at the other end of the gorge. I seen this as complete missed opportunity, the River Mersey Gorge provides a perfect platform to minimise the interaction with the car, speeding up commutes throughout the town
Through the introduction of a cycling/pedestrian route along the River Mersey Gorge, I see myself as providing my part of the jigsaw that is an eventual cycling culture within Stockport, where the easiest way to travel across the town is by bike, more so than by car or bus. It is stupid to believe that a complete overhaul of a town can be completed overnight with a single plan, it has to be seen as a process, I do not intend to create a masterplan to bring cycling to Stockport, I plan to lay another part of the jigsaw piece within my site. Through this infrastructure will be put in place for the future building towards a cycle first town within Stockport.
“One of the foundational principles of that work is making it easier for people to do that thing than to take any other option. [Copenhagen] is a perfect example – it is easier to make the ‘right choice’ there than it is to make any other choice.” - Adam Greenfield, Urbanscale

Summary - Programme and Form
With the main focus being on the creation of cycling infrastructure along the River Mersey, this provided the ideal platform to develop a building scheme within my site that could benefit from this new route of approach created by the bridge. Through research it became clear that no single cycling specific building was going to change the opinion on cycling held by many over night. Instead the better approach was to develop a building that could be accessible for cyclists with enough infrastructure to make it a pleasant experience, but to also provide a scheme that could be accessed by the general public, to bring them into an environment where cycling is encouraged, built around a community of Stockport citizens who all share the same passion for cycling.

The buildings form was influenced by the new route created by the cycling infrastructure, the bridge allows access to the site from every angle, so the positioning of the building was dictated by this.

The scheme became heavily influenced by the context buildings next to the site. Steeped in industrial heritage lies an old mill with a sawtooth roof design, with the roof glazing towards the north to avoid direct sunlight. My building however flipped this intention to allow the unnatural approach of positioning void towards the north and mass towards the equator.
