TODAY IN HISTORY

On 28th September 1946, Helen Shapiro was born. At the age of 10 she was singing in a school band called “Susie and the Hula Hoops” which also included a boy called Marc Field as guitarist. He went on to become Marc Bolan. Helen Shapiro started singing lessons when she was 13. In 1961, at the age of 14, she had a hit with Don’t Treat Me Like a Child. This was quickly followed by two more hits. You Don’t Know and Walking Back to Happiness topped the UK pop charts in the autumn of that year.

THE WAY WE WERE

When I first retired from work I used to listen to the radio a lot. To begin with I listened to plays and spoken word programmes. After a while I got into the habit of listening to music while I was doing the housework. I quite liked young people’s music. It set me thinking about how fashions change in music. Young people like to think they’re being rebels when they choose music (or fashions) that their parents find outrageous! Maybe the biggest difference of opinion is about volume. “Turn it DOWN!’ was heard often in our house when the girls were teenagers.

DO YOU REMEMBER?

I loved Physics lessons at school. We had a great teacher who did some sort of experiment every week. One week Mr Phipps set out to demonstrate how heat makes metal expand and contract. He carefully rigged up the experiment of an iron bar with a nut at one end and a hole with a thin rod through it at the other. He heated the iron bar and tightened the nut as it expanded. Then he stopped and we waited as the cooling iron bar contracted. The whole room was silent. Then the thin rod snapped; shot across the lab and shattered the glass of the fume cupboard. Our cheers could be heard all over the school!

OVER TO YOU

Dear Mary and Jimmy At this time of year I really enjoy having a variety of different soups. During the summer, even if it isn’t hot weather, I wouldn’t choose soup for lunch. Once autumn is on its way, there’s nothing I like better in the middle of the day than a big bowl of steaming hot soup, and some crusty bread to go with it. I used to like making soup, especially if we had chicken at the weekend and I could make my own stock. It was a good base for all sorts of vegetable combinations, and very nourishing. Best wishes from Sheila
