39 HAI BAH TRUNG DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS January 2020 - Now Ho Chi Minh City, China 4,100m2 Under Construction We were commissioned for the renovation of a listed building at the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. We were initially attracted to this project given the primacy of its location. There is a ubiquity of similarly attractive mid-century modernist buildings across Ho Chi Minh, each with inviting curves, elaborate shading systems and well used balconies catching the evening breeze. With the city currently enjoying a period of extraordinary growth, there has been allot of pressure to increase the city centre’s density by demolishing allot of these buildings. We saw this as possibly presenting the city with a case study in the rehabilitation of the existing city fabric as well as hopefully as a catalyst for other restoration projects. In changing this from apartments into office space, we felt it was necessary to focus on the inner façade. Here we could transform the building using traditional shading systems that were already in use in a more systematised fashion, whilst also matching the new functions of the building. The strategy was to have a light touch and focus on key details such as the window, where we felt we could make an impact. As this was a new venture for the client too, we worked closely formulating a viable plan that could prove profitable as well as a template to attempt similar projects. The project is currently under construction.

X O N G ’A N C H E N G J I S TAT I O N DWAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS January 2020 - May 2020 Shanghai, China 150,000m2 On Hold Xong’An is a new planned city outside of Beijing that will become a new center for commerce and official state business; with many government department planning to relocate from Beijing, along with several Chinese businesses and banks planning new headquarters in the City. The Chengji Station will be one of the first public buildings built and given its significance a major architectural competition was arranged. Given the scale of the project it was important for us to enter the competition with a Chinese Architecture firm to partner with and we chose ECADI, a Shanghai based LDI with a long track record in Infrastructure projects in China. For engineering support we worked with SBP over the 4 months of the competition. Internally we had a team of six working on this project, I was one of three senior architects collaborating on the design. David was instrumental in the initial conceptual stage on setting the tone for the project and was happy with the outcome as a positive new direction for the office, attempting a typology that we often don’t get an opportunity for. We began by taking inspiration from Chinese walled gardens and wanted to make the buildings above ground feel routed in nature and not dominating the adjacent park. but rather in harmony

Z H A N G YUA N M A S T E R P L A N DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS September 2019 -Shanghai, China 28,000m2 Under Construction Zhangyan is one of the best examples of Shanghai’s Shikumen lane house districts remaining intact from the late 19th and early 20th century. The city however, has grown around it during the intervening years and the site has found itself flanked on all sides by large towers, its a part of the city out of time with its surroundings and in danger of disappearing completely. We were invited along with six other high profile firms to propose suggested masterplans for the site, that incorporated its change in use, along with a strategy for connecting the three metro lines that surround the site. We won the project on the basis of our concept for retaining much of the existing buildings and not overwhelming the site with new additions. We also won plaudits for integrating a plausible basement strategy that connected all the metro lines without complete demolition or reconstruction. The project is progressing slowly with DCA leading the design team. However, given the sensitivity of the project, it will probably take upwards of 10 years to complete.

CENTURY SQUARE DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS Febuary.2020 - April2020 Shanghai, China 66,000m2 Competition We were initially awarded this project in 2013, as the winning design for a limited invited competition by ‘Expo Group’. The brief was for a mixed use (mall, offices and hotel) tower on this site of the Shanghai 2010 world Expo. We took the project to the end of concept design before the project was stalled due to funding issues and zoning restrictions with the site. With planning approved in late 2015, this project came back to life with a revised programme and a new budget of £50m. The hotel has been replaced with more office space. We signed a FEDIC contract as the design lead for the project with a Design-build form of procurement. This sees us ceding much of the control of the design after design development to the LDI ACADI, who has been brought on board along with their in-house structural engineering team. Arup has been appointed as the sustainability engineers, as this building aims to achieve Gold LEED status. WSP for the Mechanical engineering and Severud Associates are the specialists we are consulting for the façade. We will remain as part of the design team through to completion in a consultancy role with much of the design ceding to ACADI. We will however retain control of the façade design. The team consisted of an architect and myself, with 2 interns available during the production of drawings.

PUDONG ART GALLERY DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS November.2016 -Febuary.2017 Shanghai, China Competition 31,000 m2 The ‘Pudong Art Museum’ project was an invited competition by the Pudong Municipal Government for a new addition to Shanghai’s famous waterfront. The brief was for a Landmark Art Gallery with a projected budget of £14m. The concept was, to provide a link to the surrounding riverfront by creating a unified promenade along the flood defence embankment in front of the building. The entrance is a large two story, glazed space on the second floor, with the ground level functioning as a plinth. The permanent galleries are all raised on the upper floors. By using a structural core in a pinwheel plan, a series of closed and open galleries frame views back to the Pearl Tower and over to the Bund. We worked in a small team of 4 architects to complete this project. Given the tight schedule and the nature of an intimate team we crossed over responsibilities quite often, coordinating the design input from Sir David into the design. After the initial design took shape, I worked mainly on the 3D model and all the competition images.

OLD CITY HALL DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS Shanghai, China Under Construction May.2015 - June.2016 68,000 m2 In May 2015, we won an invited international competition, set up by the ‘Bund Group’, for the redevelopment of the remaining municipal buildings of the Old City Hall and a proposal for a series of new buildings on the site. Given the sensitive nature of the site, the project required closely working with the Local Government. The design as such was subjected to many iterations to carefully balance the requirements of the client with our obligation to protect the integrity of the existing design of these historically sensitive buildings. Our current proposal is to add a new wing and to complete the third and fourth wing of the Shanghai Municipal Council building. Built in 1912 by the British, it functioned as the Concessions City Hall and is to be redeveloped into office and retail. We would retain the buildings finished prior to 1912, and remain respectful in tone with the buildings perimeter with a subdued modern counterpoint. The courtyard would provide a more open and modern façade. This would look over a large new public space allowing an area for quiet moments away from the bustle of the surrounding streets. I was part of the team during the competition stage but took over as Project Lead shortly after we were commissioned, working through the initial concept design. Given the importance to the City and the politics involved, the project as gone through several redesigns since I left the project but its finally under construction, 5 years after we initially won the competition.

N AT U R A L H I S T O RY M U S E U M DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS October.2014 - June.2016 Zhejiang, China 58,000 m2 Completed
In February 2013, DCA was invited to a limited competition for a new Natural History Museum in Zhejiang. Success from that initial competition led to a commission for a comprehensive design scheme. Work began on the design development from April 2014 in consultation with clients, Anji Council and Zhejiang Provincial Government Cultural Department. The other three main stakeholders are the end-user, the Museum Curator and his team, the Local Design Institute ZEDI and the principal contractor, Zhejiang Provincial Erjian Construction Group Ltd. As a government-funded project in China, the procurement route had several stakeholders working together in a system of contract management. As the Client, LDI and Primary Contractor are all either Government or Public-Private Partnerships and this results in a healthy collaboration, with many individuals having worked together on previous projects. The contract is an amended version of the FIDIC, (Fédération Internationale des Ingénieurs-Conseils) with specifically tailored appendices for the project. The main building sits to the north of the site, surrounded by existing trees and overlooking a valley of rice fields. The museum’s volume is divided into a series of 8 halls that step down along with the sites natural gradient. They are orientated around a large stepped central garden. A clay render, sourced from the unique red earth on-site, is used on most of the exterior and public interior allowing the buildings, despite their size, to harmonize with the natural surroundings. The programme includes 6 large exhibition halls, a temporary exhibition hall, education facilities, cinema, lecture theatre, offices, shops, restaurants and underground parking.

HENGMEIN MASTERPLAN DAVID CHIPPERFIELD ARCHITECTS Shanghai, China In Development October.2015 - December.2015 3.8 Hecter This masterplan was a unique opportunity to be involved in the transformation of the idyllic, small water town of Hengmian situated on the edge of the Disney Shanghai Resort. The client was ‘Shen Di’ (the Chinese Subsidiary company that manages the Shanghai Disney Park and its surrounding area) who had been given permission to redevelop the site into a resort on the condition of a respectful integration of the new buildings into the villages existing fabric. DCA was commissioned to deliver a feasibility study and a conceptual design. I led a team of 3 architects to produce this design. The project is currently in development to secure funding. The masterplan brings to Hengmian, a new museum, open-air market, new residential buildings as well as a hotel. With two large underground car parks available at either end of the town, cars are banned from its centre creating a tranquil pedestrian retreat alongside the canals. The hotel’s functions are scattered through the town allowing the temporal and permanent residents to cohabitate. This softens the division of the town as a tourist destination and a home to generations of families. This symbiosis between its two elements re-imagines the town as a continuation of its past rather than being divorced from it.

ESLITE BOOKSTORE DAVID CHIPPERFIELD October 2014 - now Shanghai, China Under Construction This was a project that was commissioned a year prior to my joining the office. I was added to the team during the final months of the concept design. We were not commissioned beyond Design Development due to the unexpected death of our client. We remained involved in an advisory role when the project returned a few years later under a different client and the project is currently under construction. The Xujiahui Bookstore is a new book retail store within the district of Xujiahui, in the southwest of Shanghai. Located along the busy retail street of Caoxi Road and facing the Xujiahui public square, the building site is adjacent to the well preserved ‘St Ignatius Cathedral’ and nearby the Observatory building and Zikawei Library, perhaps the best examples of architecture built by the Jesuit missionaries present in Xujiahui at the beginning of 1900s.

DQSW HEADQUARTERS NERI & HU December 2018 - May 2019 Zhengzhou, China Under construction This was an invited competition in Zhengzhou, for a Museum building, with an estimated Budget of £30m. The program was for a Museum to be the centrepiece for a new district on the edge of the city, to house a collection of rare gems and Jewellery that had been donated to help establish the new museum. Zhengzhou has was a traditional centre for the trade of Jade and gemstones and still has a specialized auction house in the city, which will be relocated to the adjacent to the site in 2022. The brief also required us to accommodate a large ancestral hall that was to be moved to the site. It had been salvaged from a nearby town. We worked in a small team to complete this competition over a two month period. Given the tight schedule and the nature of the intensity of a project such as this, we overlapped our responsibilities quite often, coordinating the design input from Partner Lyndon Neri. The key to the design was drawing inspiration from the quarries and mines that surround the city, where stone, jade and other precious stones have been mined throughout the history of the area. We wanted to create a tension between the openness of the public areas, with views to above and the intimate darker gallery spaces to experience the exhibitions. The ancestral hall was also sunk down in the ground to allow a unique viewing experience; submerged between the reflecting pools. This also embraced the theme of carved spaces and intimacy.

HEARTH SALES OFFICE CIDO 06.2016 - 02.2017 Hsinchu, Taiwan On Hold We were commissioned for the conversion of a vacant building into a Sales Office for a local construction company. The brief was to create a flagship sales centre that would reflect the young vibrant nature of their business. To achieve this we used brightly coloured vertical shading on the exterior of the building to create a noticeable visual impact from the adjacent park. This not only suited the character of the company but also allowed the building to be easily recognizable in the area. We drew inspiration from the serenity of libraries for the building’s interior after discussing the company’s ethos of continual learning. By breaking up the main space with a series of bookshelves placed perpendicularly with the windows, we created a series of intimate sales rooms that can be separated off from the main area. This series of bookshelves gently rotates to accommodate the room’s geometry and is the main design feature of the interior space. The project was placed on hold during design development. All aspects of the production and management of the architecture work, along with client interaction and contract management was done by me with assistance from the rest of our team at CIDO.

H S U A PA R T M E N T CIDO April.2017 -December.2017 Completed Hsinchu, Taiwan The design for this apartment was based on the creation of one large flowing living space. We combined the Living, Dining and Gallery areas into one single space and used a series of fixed marble cabinetry ‘islands’ that help define the various uses. With each ‘island’ using a different height, there was a playful unity between the spaces. The client is an avid wine collector and the project has a large wine cellar along with a display cabinet for spirits and other drinks. We created a false door to the bedrooms and kitchen to allow the client to clarify and define the separation between the guest areas and the more private areas. With Herringbone real wood flooring, tropical wood cabinetry, fluted glass sliding doors and marble tops; this project put the quality in the apartment’s materiality rather than ornamentation. This allowed the quality of the design to be something that could be felt and experienced throughout the apartment rather than hidden away in some intricate details. All aspects of the production and management of the architecture, along with the client interaction, contract management and on-site supervision was done by me with part-time assistance from the rest of the CIDO team over a four-month period.

F U S H E N G YU H OT S P R I N G H OT E L AIM ARCHITECTS May.2014 - October.2014 Sichuan, China 2.4 Hector Completed This luxury hot spring resort is built around the hilltop of Luo Fu Shan, in Sichuan Province. The Client is a local Developer, Onsen. With private backing, they are undertaking this project as their first hotel venture. The site is 300Mu or 21Ha, with 70,000 m2 built surface. AIM was commissioned back in 2011 after the client being impressed with similar work completed for ‘Naked Retreat.’ After completion of the developed design stage, the project was stalled as the client secured financial backing. The total value of the project was $55M and construction began in March 2013, completing in October 2014. My responsibilities as project manager were overseeing a staff of 4, scheduling the work for my staff, reviewing and correcting their drawings and preparing and delivering several drawing packages over the 6 months. I was also engaging in the drafting of key details given the size of the team. Meeting with suppliers and choosing materials was also an important aspect of the project. Vincent de Graaf, the Partner overseeing the project, and I, would alternate on weekly site visits. As it was 4 hours travel (including a flight) this was a two-day affair with the contractor, LDI, engineer, landscape architect and client. After my return I would complete a report for the whole design team, highlighting issues that had arisen and problems to be solved agreed solutions and breaking down the responsibility in each case. These reports were highly important in guaranteeing a level of quality on such a sprawling project and allowed us to retain a level of design control.

SOHO GUBEI TOWER ADJAYE ASSOCIATES 10.2013 - 05.2014 Shanghai, China 31,000 m2 Terminated during Construction Documentation This Project was a large mixed-use 170m tower located in the Gubei district of Shanghai and was for the Chinese Developer SOHO. The design was based around a complex stepped diamond facade. This gave the building an amazing layered complexity that revealed itself as ever-changing as the public viewed it from the adjacent park, the sunken courtyards and lobbies. By bracing the structure laterally and augmenting the floor plate, each floor became unique. If built this would have been a landmark project for SOHO in Shanghai. During the 6 months, I was active on this project it was taken from Concept to Developed Design. Adjaye Associates were awarded the project following an invited competition in June 2013. A site office was later established in Shanghai to complete further development of the design. A bespoke contract was drafted by SOHO, based on the Swiss FIDIC contract with project-specific appendices. As it was not a standard UK contract the typical Chinese work stages were denoted. The Scope was broken down into 5 sections, Architecture, Interior, Signage, Lighting and Landscape. Adjaye Associates were appointed to complete all the above to the equivalent of Concept design (stage 2) and the Architecture to Developed Design (stage 3). The additional design team included, initially, Thornton Tomasetti for Structural Engineering before they were replaced by Tongji’s engineering team, who was also appointed as the LDI. The MEP was Meinhardt and the Façade Consultant was ALT. All other consultancies such as QS, was provided by SOHO’s in-house team.

Facade The façade system of the Park Tower and City Block is intertwined with a highly efficient structural system that responds to seismic and high wind design forces. The cross-braced diagrid system (high-density reinforced concrete within pre-fabricated steel tubes) sets up the main structural element. The modularity of this basic element means that - despite the appearance of the buildings being very specific, distinctive and sculptural repetition and thus cost-effectiveness is standard. Within the diamond-shaped base element the façade steps inwards at regular intervals, thus setting up an intriguing three-dimensionality that engenders stunning light/shadow plays and interesting views from within/outside. Viewed from within the stepping façade sets up appealing perspectives and spatial configurations. The diagrid structure and the reveals of the stepping façade are clad in locally sourced terracotta elements. The full-height curtain wall consists of an anodized aluminium mullion system on the interior with highly energy efficient glazing elements. External vertical terracotta fins set in line with the glazing mullions enhance the texture of the external building skin whilst acting as external sun protection. This was a proposal for a 170m landmark tower in the heart of the Gubei district of Shanghai. I joined the office after the initial concept design had been approved by the developer. I was a member of a small team of architects that undertook major changes from the initial design for final approval of the concept and then the design development phases. My work focused mainly on the redesign of the facade of both the tower and city block; designing, modeling, rendering and detailing several options.

CTTQ HEADQUARTERS EXH DESIGN May 2013 - October 2013 Jiangsu, China Completed This was a competition-winning masterplan proposal for the CTTQ medical research company. The masterplan includes a new iconic headquarters tower, R+D, Production facilities, accommodation and staff amenities. Given the sites high water table we created a large plinth allowing the basement to be above ground level. Like rocks on the landscape, the buildings appear less uniformly ordered and adopts a more dynamic form. The project has since been completed although not published due to the preferred privacy of the company.

HANGZHONGMEN OFFICE EXH DESIGN January 2013 - March 2013 Nanjing, China Completed I was given the task of developing the interior of an existing ‘Min Gou’ Style Building from the1930’s. The client wanted to create a new executive office that did not compete with the surrounded listed buildings. I tried to incorporate much of the traditional style and tone of the origin of the building, which I then integrated with a more modern design philosophy. This was a fast-paced project, which I led from initial concept to completion. We finished all design and documentation in under one month, construction took another two months.

L A H K TA C E N T E R RMJM May 2011 - September 2011 St. Petersburg, Russia Completed The masterplan is a mixed-use development for the headquarters for Gazprom PLC. The building was envisaged as an organic form consisting of layers of transparent and reflective surfaces. The Lakhta Centre combines a 462m high ‘skyscraper’ with a 300m long ‘ground scraper’. The two forms come together to create a balanced composition, organic in nature and inspired by the movement of water, the natural element that led to the foundation of the city of St Petersburg. We were given a tight four-month time schedule to take this from an initial concept to a detailed design proposal. The tower was already designed prior to this redesign on the site. I was involved in the initial design development from concept to the production of the tender package for the base buildings and tower. I took a lead role in aspects of the wider masterplan lead role in aspects and the final report.

WAVERLEY VALLEY STUDENT WORK November 2011 - February 2011 Edinburgh, UK Masters The concept stems from the urbanism theories of grid and flow. When considering the current geography of the Waverley Valley there is a natural flow down the valley; this becomes entwined with the grid of the old and new towns. This model is a culmination of studies on the natural flow and the imposed grid of the site. The model shows a jigsaw of blocks which formed the basis for the design of the master plan. The urban study is then deepened by selecting one ‘rig’ of land to develop a proposal. By working on the site section I manages to keep a similar density for the site whilst changing the program from residential to a hotel.

MAIN AXIAL ROUTES The main routes through the centre of Edinburgh; ‘The Royal Mile’ and ‘Princess Street’ are traversed by the North and South Bridge. All of the main cultural buildings are tied to these routes. This makes the Waverley Valley and its gardens the Green Heart of the city. It also provides a possible secondary pedestrian axis, extending from ‘Princess Street Gardens’ and connecting the proposed cultural buildings in the masterplan.
ACTIVE STREET FRONT The focus of the masterplan is the green corridor extending from ‘Princess Street Gardens’. This creates a new form of street-scape largely lacking the old town of Edinburgh, with little priority currently given to pedestrians and open space. This axis has a very active street front and is accessed from the Royal Mile through the revitalization of the ‘Closes’. With inviting views and activities continuing through the transitional space, the ‘Closes’ draw people to the green corridor of Market Street.
DEVELOPMENT The Traditional ‘Fish-bone’ structure of the Royal Mile creates long ‘rig’ housing plots running down the valley, I think this provides a unique opportunity to not only retain the peculiarities of the ‘Closes’ and the density of a medieval city but also an opportunity to provide a developer to vary the streets-cape through parcelling of the land into strips.

EUROPEAN KUNSTHALLE STUDENT WORK January 2010 - March 2010 Berlin, Germany Masters The European Kunsthalle was initiated in 2005 under the guise of an Art Institution without a set portfolio. It is a branch of the ‘European Society for Contemporary Art’ which, itself, is funded from the European Union Cultural Department. It has remained without a physical location allowing it to become a discursive platform. The focus of which is the re-imagining the role of a ‘Kunsthalle’ in contemporary art in particular with concepts of permanence and site-specificity in displaying work (European Kunsthalle, 2010) Despite existing in such an unstable model The European Kunsthalle quickly became noted for its innovative exhibitions and its publications. It incorporated the idea of ‘European’ as a collaborative process within art and embraced a healthy diversity in contemporary art practices. It is currently looking for funding for a permanent home. The identity of The European Kunsthalle as an artistic forum was central to its establishment, and for this reason, Berlin would be perfect for such an institution. As the centre for much of the emerging contemporary art in Europe, Berlin is undoubtedly the youthful side of art today. As a public entity, it seeks to remain visible and open to both the art community and the general public. It would be set up under a cooperation structure, yet through collaborations with institutions and initiatives from various cultural production and mediation contexts both locally and internationally with Kunsthallen, museums, festivals, artist-in-residency and curatorial programs, academies, universities and art magazines. It would be a hub, growing and shrinking across the building, the city and Europe in response to each program displayed yet at all times orchestrated from its home in Berlin.

BLACKHALL MOSQUE STUDENT WORK November 2010 - December 2010 Edinburgh, UK Masters The basis for this project is to increase the site density and alter its use. The Queensferry Road has increased substantially in traffic volume and projects built in recent times along this radial route have mainly been 3 or 4 story apartment buildings, opposed the existing single and two-story bungalows. The proposal increased the density, as with other similar projects in the area, whilst retaining the existing block street plan and the site’s current green ratio. The main focus of the design was integrating the mosque with the surrounding city fabric. The mosque is currently housed in a dilapidated old church that was not built for purpose; parking often overflows into the surrounding suburban streets and the building’s orientation does not address the busy junction successfully. I wanted to position the mosque at the centre of the block and to allow it to be the primary focus whilst relating to the surrounding buildings.
