Hello! I love all things design. The process of creating beautiful objects is my passion. However I do have other interests such as sushi, French bulldogs, and all things Seinfeld.

Techne Pack a messenger bag with a twist

Project Concept A personal project I pursued not too long ago. I actually sold several bags and used the funds to pay for a trip to Canada. Whenever I would make a bag for myself, another order would come in and I would send it off. Because of that, I had to buy a bag back from a former customer in order to revise this project. It was a fun experience and I would do it again.

Design Challenge Conduct user research and competitive benchmarking to design a new messenger bag that will make the transportation of user items easier on a bicycle.

“I have to be pretty versatile when I am on the clock, so I expect the same from my bags.”

“I hate switching my bags whenever I carry different sized objects.

“Give us something new to look at. Tired of seeing plastic buckles and rounded flaps.”

“...Pockets are also very important to me because I like to keep my wallet and electronics safe.”

Interview Problems & Insights Insights

Bag Switching Users constantly have to switch bags to accomodate different sized loads and awkwardly shaped objects.

Small Items Electronics and small items are damaged or lost in traditional messenger bags.

Tough Aesthetics A utilitarian aesthetic resonates with the cycling and messenger demographic.

The Solution 3 Bags in 1

1.

The bag in its smallest configuration allows users to carry smaller items and every day needs.

After multiple prototype iterations, the final solution is a transformable messenger bag that can change its size to accomodate different sized carry loads.

2.

In its medium configuration, the design can carry small boxes and medium sized objects.

large and 3. Finally, awkward shaped objects can fit in the bag’s largest configuration.

Small Items An integrated laptop sleeve and small item pockets allow users to easily organize electronics and personal items.

4 Hour Design Challenge REDEFINE THE STANDARD FORM OF INCENSE HOLDERS

THESE ARE SOME STANDARD INCENSE HOLDER FORMS

THESE DESIGNS CAN BE FOUND IN STORES WORLD WIDE. SO WHAT INSPIRATION CAN I DRAW FROM THEIR DESIGNS AND MATERIAL USAGE?

INITIAL CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING FORMS THAT ALTERED THE ORIENTATION OF THE INCENSE CANDLE WHILE USING RECLAIMED MATERIALs.

THESE TWO DESIGNS WERE BASED AROUND RECTINLINEAR FORMS THAT EMPHASIZED THEIR FUNCTION AND PROVIDED VISUAL INTEREST.

CONCEPT 1 STORAGE BOX THAT ALSO SERVES AS A HOLDER. UTILIZES TWO DIFFERENT MATERIALS THAT ADD VALUE TO THE PRODUCT.

Flip-Up Candle Holder

Scrap Metal and Reclaimed Wood

Storage For incense Candles

CONCEPT 1 FEEDBACK

AFTER I DRAFTED MY FIRST CONCEPT, I REACHED OUT TO MY PEERS FOR FEEDBACK ON HOW THE DESIGN COULD BE IMPROVED.

“DESIGN IS REDUNDANT”

“TOO MUCH MATERIAL”

“SIZING IS WRONG”

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

WITH THE FEEDBACK, I FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING MORE SIMPLE AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGNS WHILE ALSO FOCUSING ON THE FORM.

I COMBINED ELEMENTS FROM TWO FORMS TO DEVELOP A NEW SIMPLE AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN

Final Concept A single piece of wood is cut and able to hold multiple candles at a visually interesting angle.

Multiple functions performed by combing forms.

Single use of Material

Mico A desk organizer for the creative professional.

Beautiful The Art The work created by artists and creative professionals is inspiring and beautiful. Everything special about the creator can be seen in their work. It is their unique style and perspective that make them valuable to the creative world.

Artwork by Jo Lawliel

Functional The Tools The tools used to create beautiful art and designs are just as elegant as the work itself. Each tool has a unique purpose and has a silhouette that defines its role in creation.

Ugly The Tool Organizer The desk organizers in many art and office stores are ugly and flimsy. They do not belong in the same space as beautiful artwork and writing utensils. Creative professionals would benefit from a desk organizer that fulfills their desire for beauty in their lives.
