Norfolk Suite A Sonata for Small Chamber Orchestra

About the Piece This work was originally written as a sextet (clarinet, trombone, piano, percussion, violin, contrabass) for the 2013 Norfolk New Music Festival and dedicated to their ensemble. After hearing a wonderful performance by the sextet that summer, I came to the realization that I was not pleased with the way I orchestrated the work. There was a strong need for a larger and more balanced sound than what my orchestration for the sextet provided. Therefore, I started from scratch and re-orchestrated the work from the piano reduction for a small chamber orchestra. The grouping divisions I was working with while re-orchestrating the work were woodwind quintet, string quintet, and percussion trio; therefore, the antiphonal writing that is seen quite frequently between the two quintets is intended and should be brought out musically and acoustically in performance. The percussion trio, though occasionally used as a separate group, is more often divided, merging with one of the quintets (or both, in the sporadic case of completely blended passages or, more frequently, full tutti sections). The form of the work is a one-movement sonata with, roughly, a fast-slow-fast division within itself. All of the melodic and harmonic material in this piece are the product of the linear fourth and the vertical minor 2nd/major 7th that begin the piece, which develop organically in time. The 7th also represents two contrasting key centers- often ‘black’ vs. ‘white’ [piano] key- that provide strong impulses of forward motion throughout the piece. In terms of ‘black’ vs. ‘white’ keys, the slow section is a harmonic inversion of the outer fast sections and provides an apparent colour contrast in the piece, despite the same harmonic procedures is being used, now flipped.
