Models in Motion - Hurricane

Type: Studio Design Project

Year: 2023

Instructors: Scottie McDaniel & Sara Bolivar

For this project we were given the framework of researching and developing means of representing natural phenomenon through diagramming and utilization of design software.

My given natural phenomenon was the hurricane, and specficially the ones that devastated the south easteren part of the United States.

We were tasked with using simple linework and utilizing research on the phenomenon to document the different aspects and outcomes that stem from its occurence. This resulted in the exploration in representation and exploring how to represent something dynamic through static drawings.

For this project we conducted a deep dive into a precedent project in Mexico called Ruta Del Peregrino to create a series of case studies that document the history, contexts, impacts, and complexities, especially as they relate to the region in which it is situated. We achieved this by creating a chronological infographic on the history of the trail, a narrative map showcasing the route as well as the topography of the region, and the different sites that people will see as they travel to reach their final destination.

For this project we were tasked with outputing a speculative spatial scenario that is the embodiment of works from firms we were all assigned with at the beginning of the semester.

My given landscape architecture firm was MVVA. As the semester progressed I was enthralled with how the firm would incorporate research in their designs as well as their utilization of materiality and seasonality with their planting design.

The goal of my design was to capture this with how there are moments of curiosity with how the wall found in the center has oppurtunity for spontaneous growth as well as the inner walls in the “crater” at the center of the design.
