SHIFT

ANDREW CHIU ARCHITECTURE YEAR 3 DESIGN CONCEPT PROPOSAL ARC16304 NEGOTIATED BRIEF - EAT, SHARE, LIVE

SHIFT A kinetic spatial design that changes and adapts to the needs of the user while providing a comfortable environment. This design aims to increase interactions between the public and traders to further enhance the local community within Borough Market, London. To enable customers to buy fresh produce from the market and cook it on-site alone, with a couple of friends or even people met while shopping in the market through these interactions. Bringing together multiple international culinary arts and skills and sharing them with the community. The shifting aspect of this design allows for flexible usability suitable for anyone of any height such as wheelchair users. The kinetic modules are able to adapt to these users by adjusting the height of the kitchen modules to a more comfortable level. The space is set to be able to shift from a kitchen configuration to a performance stage configuration during aftermarket hours to provide a space for the local buskers or events to take place to create a public social hot spot. However, these are only two examples of spaces SHIFT is capable of, the potential to create more spaces is infinite‌

WHY A PUBLIC COMMUNAL KITCHEN SPACE? We use food as a starting point to connect people, break down cutural barriers and address challenging issues. Sitting down and sharing a meal can be the perfect place to begin these conversations. This leads to the formation of friendships, the sharing of recipes, skills and stories.

PRECEDENT: FOOD FOR FOOD INTERVENTION The Decorators based in London created a temporary restaurant in Ridley Road Market, Dalston, London. They wanted to encourage the locals to rediscover their local market. In doing so, they created Ridley’s Temporary Restaurant. Each day, they had one dish on the menu for lunch and the dish was made from ingredients from the market. They displayed the ingredients on a big board and they used the produce as currency.

So, you would go into the market and find one ingredient on the menu and hand it in and in the end, you get one serving of the dish. This encouraged locals to explore the markets while they were looking for these produces and the result was acquaintances being formed between the seller and buyer due to these interactions.

LOCATION: BOROUGH MARKET, LONDON Similar to the Decorators, I want to create more interactions between buyers and traders, to develop and maintain connections and to enhance the local community by bringing people together through the use of trading, cooking and eating.

WHY BOROUGH MARKET? Borough market is London’s oldest food market dating back 1000 years. There are many people who visit the market to buy daily produce as well as exclusive items only found in the market. The area is also a heavy tourist area and the market itself is a destination for tourism therefore there would be a high diversity in culture.

MY SITE: JUBILEE PLACE Joined to the market is Jubilee Place, currently a car park. However, during special occasions, additional stalls or events are held in this area. This space is easily accessible from the market and provides good lighting.

SITE INFORMATION The roof structure is made from some sort of ETFE material like that of the Eden Project which is semi-transparent so it lets in a lot of natural lighting as well as providing shelter for the space.

PRECEDENT: TRANSFORM - MIT Transform is is project developed by a group in MIT. A large square composed of many smaller cubes create a grid. These cubes can be elevated to create different shapes for different purposed. This idea is on a small scale but what if applied to a larger scale? Say a floor? Imagine standing on a grid of cubes that can elevate to create or divide spaces, create seating and tables and other amenities.

WHEELCHAIR USERS Because each block can be manually controllled it can cater to any height. Therefore, wheelchair users can adjust the height of these blocks according to how they want it to be such as lowering drawers, sinks and appliances so they can use it just like everyone else.

KITCHEN CONFIGURATION The kitchen configuration of the space consists of 10 kitchen units. Each made up of 10 modules as well as three sets of seating areas, two small, one large. The 2-in-1 thermal light columns are placed strategically to provide a comfortable environment for both users of the kitchen units and seating area while close enough to eachother to fill the space with warmth and preventing any cold spots.

The kitchen space is like a showroom of 10 different kitchen units each displaying a show of various culinary skills and arts. The kitchen spaces are bookable from the on-site reception building which also houses a recipe space which shows what dishes can be made from the ingredients available in the market thus encouraging people to explore the market further.

STAGE CONFIGURATION The stage configuration of the space is introduced after market hours or after a certain time during the evening to become a social hot spot. Local buskers are able to come perform, events may be held or just a place to host a meetup.

DRAWING IN PEOPLE The seating is configured in this manner so that stage at the center is visible from the street opposite as well as the passageway between borough market and this space therfore drawing people in when something is happenning in the space. The perspective images here show the view of the stage from the street opposite. One of the seating areas blocks the view of the stage near the center, this is done so passerbys only catch a glimpse of the stage and whats going on thus drawing them into the space through curiousity.
