Design of an Urban Housing Unit An Apartment for the Explorative Creator

3

4

This project entailed the design of an apartment for the Lincoln Building at 44 East Main Street in Champaign, IL. It is tailored around the needs and desires of one speciďŹ c client. My client is an explorer and creator. They enjoy world travel and pride themselves on their journeys. They are creative, using most free time to write, paint, or cook. They are energetic and sociable, but enjoy their privacy to a reasonable extent.

Shelving Unit

A large, custom shelving unit is central to the apartment. The path of travel ows around it, ensuring that it will be respected as the centerpiece. It is designed so that the client can show o collections from their travels as well as hobbies and aspects of their personality.

At aproximately 450 sq. ft., space was at a premium in the apartment. Due to this, a creative design approach was taken to designing the bed. The bed is queen-sized and behaves normally when deployed. However, it can be folded into the wall to reveal a collapsed desk underneath it. The desk can then be folded out.

Urban Impressions A Space for Escaping

17

This project entailed the design of a building for a site in Champaign, IL. The purpose of this building was to oer a place to escape from the stress of daily life and temporarily relax. Before settling on a ďŹ nal design, I produced six massing models experimenting with weight, motion, and organization to see what responded best to the conditions of the site.

Ultimately, I decided that a building that was heavy and oered interlocking elements in a grid formation oered the best response to the site.

The cascading wooden elements express the varying degrees of privacy from the exterior of the building.

South Loop Urban Agriculture Center Outreach Kiosk

27

This project entailed the design of an outreach center that would connect to areas outside of the reach of an urban agricultural center located in the South Loop of Chicago, IL. For it, I designed a kiosk that would serve the public by providing them a greenhouse to grow fresh produce year-round in addition to an outdoor seating area and a seed exchange. Five sites were located within Chicago for this kiosk to be placed. The criteria and thought that went into their selection is detailed throughout the next several pages.

Site

1 Corner of 183rd St and Kedzie Ave This site shares a parking lot with a Jewel-Osco, presenting the opportunity to receive produce that is not fresh enough to be placed out in the store. A nearby gas station, laundromat, and bank are other attractions that show that the location sees plenty of traffic. It is located in a city-identified site for a food retail opportunity and is surrounded by unserved areas in the community with incomes below the Chicago median level. 37.7% of the individuals in this particular neighborhood are living under 185% of the Federal Poverty Line.

2 Brentwood Park This site is located in the center of a suburban neighborhood. The only grocery store nearby is a Mariano’s located in town and may not be easily accessible for everyone. The kiosk would be located in a park, part of which could easily be converted to an outdoor growing area. Palos South Middle School and Carl Sandburg High School are two nearby schools that could donate leftover produce. The site is located in a city-identified site for a food retail opportunity and is surrounded by unserved areas in the community with incomes below the Chicago median level. 18.0% of the individuals in this particular neighborhood are living under 185% of the Federal Poverty Line.

3 West Pullman Park

30

This site is located in the middle of a suburban neighborhood. There are no grocery stores nearby. The kiosk would be located in a park which also houses softball fields, a nearby elementary school, a pool, a playground, and a basketball court. The nearby Metcalfe Community Academy Elementary school can donate leftover produce. The site is located in a city-identified site for a food retail opportunity and is surrounded by unserved areas in the community with incomes below the Chicago median level. 50.8% of the individuals in this particular neighborhood are living under 185% of the Federal Poverty Line.

4 Hillside Commons This site is located off of a main road, and is therefore relatively convenient to access. There are no grocery stores nearby. It is directly adjacent to St Domitilla Catholic Church, presenting the church the opportunity to organize food drives that directly benefit the community. The site is between two city-identified sites for food retail opportunities and is surrounded by unserved areas in the community with incomes below the Chicago median level. 30.9% of the individuals in this particular neighborhood are living under 185% of the Federal Poverty Line.

5 Austin-Foster Park This site is located in a park in the middle of a neighborhood with no nearby grocery stores. Three nearby churches -- the Filipino Immanuel Baptist Church, The Branch Community Church, and International Penecostal Assemble -- present the churches the opportunity to organize food drives that directly benefit the community. It is near Farmers Glory Food Distillers, a produce wholesaler, which could donate produce that has passed its date of ideal freshness. It is surrounded by unserved areas in the community with incomes both below and at or above the Chicago median level. 20.9% of the individuals in this particular neighborhood are living under 185% of the Federal Poverty Line.
