WELCOME ALL
When it comes to everything Silver Lake & Hart, the go-to guy is Scott Beal, the Executive Director of the Silver Lake Sand Dunes-Hart Visitor’s Bureau. You can find him at the Visitor’s Center located just off the US-31 Hart exit 149 next to Subway, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. He can show you the ropes if this is your first time on the sand., whether you are renting or have brought your own vehicle. He can also point you in the right direction for finding your way to a place to stay, great food to eat or fun activities for your crew.
We asked Scott to tell us what he thought new visitors to the area ought to know on their first trip and he shared, “Although the sand dune experience is a top attraction in our area, there is so much more to see and do in our area after the dunes. If you are travelling with kids, you won’t want to miss Lewis Adventure Farm & Zoo or Craig’s Cruisers is also a favorite. For the ‘big kids’, Wave Club Water Sports can set you up with every kind of watercraft for a fun day on the water or the Silver Lake Wine & Brew Trail will give you a taste of the region from another perspective. Don’t be shy about taking a look around the area. You will love what you find!”
MEET A VETERAN DUNER
Recently, we had an opportunity to chat with Dave Martel. Dave is a veteran duner who has been very active in creating a platform for the dune community to have a collective voice to be represented on issues and improvements to the SIlver Lake area. Dave is the owner of DuneStars.com, LLC, a foundation for the off-road community. He is a board member of the Silver Lake Recreation Association and is a founder of the SIlver Lake Sand Dunes Facebook group, which has more than 70,000 members and is known to be a central source for real-time dune information within the community.
DUNE CULTURE
When we asked Dave about the culture of the dunes, he described it as a “tight-knit community focused on the dune experience.” He shared that he had visited other popular dune destinations in America, such as Glamis in California and Little Sahara in Oklahoma, but nothing compared to the sense of belonging he feels at Silver Lake. “Everyone comes to SIiver Lake to have a good time. We have a ‘we’ve all been there’ attitude and are always willing to lend a hand to anyone that gets in a jam. We understand that everyone has had their first day on the dunes just like us and we will all come to their aid as soon as we see the tow strap come out.”
Dave also shared that the local business community is a big part of the Silver Lake culture. “The business owners show up and chip in. They cherish the Dune Community and understand the importance of Duners to the Silver Lake economy.”
QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
When asked for some insider tips, both Scott and Dave were happy to share some helpful insights, giving us an insider’s view of things “first-timers” should know before hitting the sand.
HOW CAN SOMEONE HAVE A GREAT FIRST EXPERIENCE AT THE DUNES?
Nothing really comapres to the ORV experience that Silver Lake Sandu Dunes delivers. Experience full-throttle fun whipping across the dunes, spend some down-time relaxing on the Lake Michigan shoreline and make friends with people that share your passion for the sport. Just come prepared. Take a look at the safety tips and know how to prepare your vehicle and familiarize yourself with the area before you start zipping around. These are pretty simple ways to ensure a great day on the dunes.
WHAT IS THE TOP MISTAKE NEWBIES MAKE?
An overconfident driver is the greatest killjoy. Many accidents happen because of overconfidence. The dune terrain is ever-changing. If you have been to the dunes before, don’t assume they will be the same on your next visit or even the next day. Just because you have a lot of hours driving your ORV outside of the dunes, doesn’t make your an accomplished duner. It is important to familiarize yourself with your surroundings. Always take a slow lap to get the lay of the land before bringing the heat.
WHERE ARE THE BEST SPOTS FOR SPECTATORS?
Spectators are always welcome. On the pedestrian end of the dunes, you will find stairs to the hill. From there you will be able to catch a good sampling of the ORV action. This is also a great spot to meet people if you are a newbie. Just let them know you are new to the dunes and they can teach you everything you need to know. They might even offer you a ride!
STAY SAFE ON THE DUNES
1. DON’T STOP!
If you find yourself in trouble, don’t stop in the middle of the dune. Being planted in the middle of ORV traffic area is dangerous to you and the others zooming around not expecting you to be stranded in the middle. Move out of the way quickly or send a spotter to the top of the hill to give warning while you bail it out.
2. TERRAIN AWARENESS
If you are new to the dunes, you may not be aware that the dunes change daily due to weather conditions and of course, the wind. What may have been a three-foot drop the last time you crested a hill, could become a heart-stopping cliff only hours later. Before you go blasting over a hill, take a slow lap so you know what is waiting on the other side.
3. KEEP YOUR HEAD ON A SWIVEL
Just like you, everyone is on the dunes to have a great time in the sand. However, some people are risk-taking daredevils and others are just barely puttering along. Keep an eye out and don’t be the guy busting out the tricks before you know what your neigbors are up to.
COOL FACTS ...
1. MANY ACRES
The dunes consist of about 2,936 acres of which 1,875 acres are public land.
2. TERRAIN AWARENESS
The Park is spread across an area approximately 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide.
PETS LOVE THE DUNES!
Pets must always be on a six-foot leash and under an owner’s control. Always clean up after your pet & please carry a waste bag with you at all times.
The sand deposits on the dunes are one of the largest deposits of living dunes in all of Michigan.
The dunes can change drastically from day to day, even hour by hour depending on the severity of the weather.
3. DEPOSITS 4. CHANGING DUNES 5. LIGHTHOUSE
EVERY VEHICLE NEEDS ...
1. SAFETY FLAGS
Every vehicle on the dunes needs to be equipped with an orange saftey flag. Your flag must be 10-feet off the ground when mounted at standstill (8-feet under motion). Specs: safety orange, rectangular shape and solid material. Got it? If you don’t, we’ve got you covered. The flags are sold at retailers all over town. Outfit your rig with the flag and you’re instantly in the club!
2.TIRE PRESSURE GUAGE
Air down . . . momentum up! Tires should be at 12-15 psi and yes . . . you can drive on pavement for short distances when you air down. Once your romp in the sand has come to an end, just make your way to the Welcome Center where you will find an abundance of free air stations.
3. TOW STRAP
We hope you aren’t going to need it, but if you sink it, it’s your ticket out. All of the regular duners know, when they see a tow strap, you’re waving the white flag. Hook up the tow strap and help will be on its way!
