Welcome to Icon Books’ July – December 2022 catalogue
Our list for the second half of 2022 reflects a period of significant growth for Icon, with more – and even better – books than ever before, to suit an ever-wider array of tastes in non-fiction. History is an especially strong area this season. Andrew Nagorski’s Saving Freud is a brilliant account of the great psychoanalyst’s hair-raising escape from Nazi-occuped Austria to London in 1938. Iwan Rhys Morus - author of a number of histories of science for Icon in the past - returns with How the Victorians Took Us to the Moon, his myth-busting exploration of some very forward-thinking 19th-century scientists. David Hoffman, author of the New York Times bestseller The Billion Dollar Spy, presents a story of rebellion in modern Cuba with Give Me Liberty. And from our Jonathan Ball Publishers list, Richard Steyn takes a forensic look at the life of Empire-builder and statesman Alfred Milner. ‘Cosy crime’ has become a publishing buzzword. But as books in this list remind us, crime is rarely very cosy. Billy Jensen is an investigative journalist who in Killers Amidst Killers explores a series of murders that almost go unoticed under the cover of America’s opioid epidemic. Mark Perlstrom’s India Uniform Nine reveals the dramatic life of a customs enforcement officer. The Killing of Lord George by Karl Shaw is an evocative tale of murder and deceit in Edwardian England. And Keri Blakinger’s Corrections in Ink: Dispatches from an American Prison has already been hailed as ‘a searing work of self-examination, an inquiry of power, and a funny, provocative, and inspiring personal story of addiction, prison, and investigative journalism’ by Orange is the New Black author Piper Kernan. For suitably intelligent Christmas gifts, we have Jillian Scudder’s riotously enjoyable tour of the most bizarre corners of astronomy, The Milky Way Smells of Rum and Raspberries, and Suki Finn’s mouth-watering, brain-twisting exploration of philosophical conundrums through food, What’s in a Doughnut Hole? More gift titles will likely follow. And, naturally, much more besides. We hope you enjoy what you see - and, we hope, eventually get to read. Duncan Heath Publisher

Few drivers have ever shaken up Formula 1 in quite the same way as Max Verstappen. Already the youngest competitor in F1 history, having made his breakthrough in 2015 aged just 17, his debut race for Red Bull at the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix saw him become the youngest driver ever to win a race, achieve a podium finish or even lead a lap. As the son of F1 legend Jos and elitelevel kart driver Sophie Kumpen, Max was destined to be a racing driver. And since that headline-grabbing debut, he has continued to make an indelible impression on the sport, courting criticism and plaudits in equal measure. Sports journalist James Gray seeks to understand the outspoken nature and aggressive driving style that make Verstappen a must-watch before, during and after races, and why his Dutch fans, who turn up to cheer him on in their orange-clad droves, are quite so fanatical.

‘This is a shocking story told by a searingly honest writer ready to look her country - and herself - squarely in the eye. It offers no false cheer, but something far more valuable and compelling: the often painful truth.’ Jonathan Freedland, author of The Escape Artist ‘Heart-wrenching and illuminating’ Kerry Daynes, author of The Dark Side of the Mind
Robin McGregor, an older man from a small town outside Cape Town, is brutally murdered. Cecil Thomas is convicted for the crime, but his trial leaves more questions than answers. As much as his daughter Liz McGregor tries to move beyond her grief - she finds new work, she even discovers love - she still wants answers. What drove Thomas to torture and kill a complete stranger? The author meets the murderer’s family and she finally gets to confront him but not without putting herself in danger. She finds answers, but not quite the answers she is looking for. Unforgiven tells a story seldom told: what happens to a family when one of their own is murdered? Where restorative justice is preached but not practiced. Where prisons are universities of crime. What would it take to achieve redemption? For the victim, the perpetrator and the country?
LIZ MCGREGOR has written and edited several books

Black Lion begins in rural South Africa where a deeply traumatic childhood experience – a cousin being dragged away by a crocodile – should have turned Sicelo Mbatha against the surrounding wilderness. Instead, he was irresistibly drawn to it. As a volunteer at Imfolozi Nature Reserve, close encounters with animals taught him to ‘see’ with his heart and thus began a spiritual awakening. Drawing from his Zulu culture and a yearning to better understand human relationship to nature, Sicelo has forged a new path to nature with an immersive, respectful and transformative way of being in the wilderness. Black Lion is an urgent reminder of how much we need wilderness for our emotional and spiritual survival.

‘An intimate, touching portrait of a genius as an old man. Ill, myopic, in denial and terribly vulnerable, this Freud is more human than any I’ve encountered before.’ Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind
Saving Freud is the story of a great man’s life, and of the extraordinary people who prolonged it, by convincing him to escape to London: the Welsh physician who brought psychoanalysis to Britain; Napoleon’s great-grandniece; Freud’s daughter, Anna; and the doctor who risked his own life by staying at Freud’s side. In examining the histories of both Freud and his closest circle, Andrew Nagorski brilliantly evokes the story of Europe in the first half of the Twentieth Century. This is a tale of a great city, a collapsing empire, a rising terror -and of a man who would change the way we think.
ANDREW NAGORSKI was born in Scotland to Polish
parents, moved to the United States as an infant and has rarely stopped moving since, serving as Newsweek’s bureau chief in Hong Kong, Moscow, Rome, Bonn, Warsaw, and Berlin. He is the author of seven previous critically acclaimed books, including Hitlerland and The Nazi Hunters. He now lives in St. Augustine, Florida, and continues to write for numerous publications.

‘Ironically, it’s never been harder telling the full truth about the climate emergency. Thanks to Bill McGuire for doing exactly that - and for still leaving us with plenty of reasons to be hopeful - just so long as we get our shit sorted without any further delay.’Jonathon Porritt
Hothouse Earth: An Inhabitant’s Guide provides a post-COP26 perspective on the climate emergency, acknowledging that it is now practically impossible to keep this side of the 1.5°C dangerous climate change guardrail. The upshot is that we can no longer dodge the arrival of disastrous, all-pervasive, climate breakdown that will come as a hammer blow to global society and economy. Bill McGuire, Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards, explains the science behind the climate crisis and for the first time presents a blunt but authentic picture of the sort of world our children will grow old in, and our grandchildren grow up in; a world that we catch only glimpses of in today’s blistering heatwaves, calamitous wildfires and ruinous floods and droughts. Bleak though it is, the picture is one we must all face up to, if only to spur genuine action - even at this late stage - to stop a harrowing future becoming a truly cataclysmic one.

Climate Hazards at University College London. His books include A Guide to the End of the World, and he writes for The Guardian, The Times, The Observer, New Scientist and others.

Filled with tales of the club’s travelling support and the evocative accounts of the journalists who saw the team of the Seventies, Curtis tells the story of a club steeped in history, defiantly refusing to bow to pomp and ceremony as it goes about lifting the ultimate prize. After a spectacular rebuild and having achieved all there is to achieve on the domestic stage, including a record-breaking 100-point season in 2017-18, City’s deep-pocketed owners have their sights firmly set on European glory once more. Yet for all their recent success at home, they are anything but welcome guests at Europe’s top table.
SIMON CURTIS is a freelance journalist specialising in all
things Manchester City. He has written extensively for the club’s various official platforms, and regularly contributes to The Blizzard, The Guardian and World Soccer Magazine. He lives in Manchester.
LAST OF THE EMPIRE-BUILDERS

‘Engagingly written, as unputdownable as a biography gets’ Financial Mail ** From the acclaimed biographer of Jan Smuts, a revealing new account of Empire-builder and First World War Cabinet minister Lord Alfred Milner **
Largely responsible for the Boer War - a conflict marking the beginning of the end of the British Empire afterwards Milner helped to unify South Africa, but brewed resentment among Afrikaners. In Britain, from 1916 Milner was part of Lloyd George’ five-man War Cabinet, and the driving force behind the Imperial War Cabinet which increased the status of Britain’s Dominions. In this comprehensively researched, first full-length biography, Richard Steyn argues that Milner’s reputation should not be solely defined by his eight years’ service in South Africa. If he was the wrong man to send to that country, he was the right person in a far greater international conflict.
RICHARD STEYN is the author of several bestselling
biographies, including Jan Smuts: Unafraid of Greatness (2015). He practised as a lawyer before switching to journalism. Steyn was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 1985-1986 and editor-in-chief of The Star from 1990-1995. He served as Standard Bank’s Director of Corporate Affairs from 1996-2001 before returning to writing.

Other features of the Universe appear obvious, such as the fact that atoms are mostly empty space. But this familiarity hides the truly amazing truths underpinning these observations. And some things merely seem improbable but are also hiding a Deep Truth, such as the fact that the Moon and Sun look the same size as viewed from Earth. This book will change forever the way you view the world.

Acclaimed crime historian and podcaster Kate Winkler Dawson draws on hundreds of source materials and never-beforeshared historical documents to present one of the first glimpses into the mind of a serial killer – a century before the term was coined – through the scientists whose work would come to influence criminal justice for decades to come. .

Along the way we explore the Salem Witch Trials and sleep paralysis, Victorian ghost stories, and soldiers’ experiences of PTSD. Parasomnias are not as uncommon as we think, but we don’t talk about them enough. Night Terrors aims to shine a light on the darkest parts of our sleeping lives.

The Babel Message A LOVE LETTER TO LANGUAGE

‘There is a delicious humour implicit in every page . . . [the book] is filled with a sense of wonder [. . .] The Babel Message was such fun that I even went out and bought a Kinder Surprise Egg.’ Mark Forsyth, Spectator
On a tiny sheet of paper, this message is translated into dozens of languages the world boiled down to a multilingual essence. Inspired by this, the author asks: what makes ‘a language’? With the help of the international community of language geeks, he shows us what the message looks like in Ancient Sumerian, Zulu, Cornish, Klingon - and many more. Along the way he considers why Hungarian writing looks angry, how to make up your own language, and the meaning of the heavy metal umlaut. Overturning the Babel myth, he argues that the messy diversity of language shouldn’t be a source of conflict, but of collective wonder. This is a book about hope, a love letter to language. ‘Quite simply, and quite ridiculously, one of the funniest and most illuminating books I have ever read.’ Simon Garfield
