thesis project

What is one’s right to the city? With the events of the 17th October, and in reaction to corrupt systems of law and governance under sectarian hegemony, people flocked the streets and occupied spaces within the city they were deprived of. The project imagines an initial moment manifested through the building of a monument inscribed in this event, constructed with an acceptance that there is a certain paradigm shift in the Lebanese psyche relating to the right to protest and to public space. The monument houses, alongside its political facilities, a library containing both a revolutionary catalogue and a protest manual. People re-envision the city, disassemble the monument in order to construct their own physical protest, using architecture as a tool for political pressure so to reclaim the city. The project is part documentation of this self-built revolution, part manual and processes that allow anyone to build.

“cárcel abierta” Building a city is not just building. It implies the generating of a democratic set of events in which citizens can and should be involved in the development of the urban fabric. Our proposal for the “replacement” of the Cárcel de Talca focused on the uncertainty that arises from dealing with such sensitive spaces within the city. . The question of what this space signifies to the citizens of Talca must precede any architectural act. With that in mind our proposal can be thought of as a series of steps or events in which citizens are slowly able to assess the historical and cultural value of this site that had been walled off from the city. A peeling of the outer walls exposes the project, then a series of cuts reveal the inner workings of the prison, all the while connecting various fragments of urban scenario to one another. Here, people are free to explore and to give meaning to all that had been unknown. . Through a process of self building and community effort, the citizens would then collectively decide what to do with the space by prototyping different structures and functions. The prison becomes a playground for ideas until the community collectively agrees on the permanent role the architecture is to have.

With an only 3-word prompt, we were tasked with investigating new forms of living together inspired by our randomly selected verbs and object. it was evident that playing games meant something much deeper on the metaphysical level, and once we manifested the idea of the table as a space for negotiation, the scheme quickly became a struggle for appropriation, highlighted by the plan as a neutral playing field. The war of ideology plays out throughout the project, where some choose to live collectively, while others opt for individualistic modes of living. The places of nothingness hang out of the field, irrational and empty, where one retreats from the constant game of life.

Modernity convinced us for too long of a failed idea of progress. It promised that industry would bring wellbeing to everyone. It did but only for a few. Cities everywhere are re-imagining their futures ins search of a more human centered society. Cahnging infrastructure centered in the human condition. We need to create places for communal live all the while providing generosity for the intimate realm. We must meet strangers, friends and lovers, while still being presented the luxury of retreat and solitude. The world is changing at an increasingly fast pace, our architecture must react to this new liquid reality. It must contain our realities, without limiting our movements. It should enhance our ever-changing flows.
