An extensive collection of rare works by renowned children’s author George Alfred Henty (1832-1902) is available to students and researchers. The collection contains more than 400 books, periodicals and articles. Budding Spielbergs had a chance to become film makers at the Digital Arts Centre. Our tranquil green campus will rapidly become your home from home. As part of a vibrant and well-motivated community of students and staff you will receive the warmest possible welcome. I have made remarkable progress here and I am sure any student who chooses to study at Worcester will be amazed at what it has to offer. Emilia Zyla, Poland, Media and Cultural Studies BA (Hons)
18
The International Centre also organises a pre-sessional course and an induction programme to help settle you into life at Worcester, as well as operating as your first port of call if you have any problems. Feedback from our recent service review highlighted the very personal approach to student support on arrival at the institution and the well-structured process of covering social and welfare issues through the introduction procedure. If you need to improve your English language skills, the University offers a one-year flexible International Foundation Diploma. Upon successful completion of the Diploma you will normally be guaranteed a place on an undergraduate degree or HND programme. Our Language Centre offers ongoing language support and also allows you to take English or another foreign language as one or more of your free choice modules. Most international students opt to take advantage of our Halls of Residence, immersing themselves in University life while remaining within walking distance of the historic city of Worcester and its many attractions. The University of Worcester is rapidly expanding. Despite this growth, we have remained true to our core philosophy of encouraging each individual student to realise their full potential and make a unique impression. Your education is our priority, and the flexibility of our modular undergraduate courses allows you to choose the most suitable pathway to realise your ambitions.

The work placement is an excellent option… it develops work related skills and discipline and may lead to a job, post-graduation. It is always a favoured option by employers. Mike Goode, Director, GB Solutions Recruitment Agency
Graduate Advantage The University of Worcester’s flexible approach to study allows you to combine subjects, tailoring your degree to your career aspirations. For example, many of our Art and Design students choose to study marketing and management alongside painting and drawing so that they are equipped to set up their own galleries. We have an excellent graduate employment record, with nearly all of our graduates gaining work or going on to further study within six months of graduation. Employers value our graduates not only for their academic abilities, but also for the emphasis we place on developing work-related skills such as writing, presentation preparation, discipline and self-motivation.
A survey of 100 graduate recruiters, by High Fliers Research, predicted a record average starting salary of £25,000 for the 2007 recruitment season and a year-onyear growth of 10% in the number of graduate vacancies. Prospects, Spring 07

Foundation Degrees FdA, FdSc your
answered
Foundation degrees are a response to industry demands. Working closely with employers, they have been designed to meet the growing demand for highly skilled people. Q What is a Foundation degree?
Q Which subjects are available?
A A Foundation degree is a qualification that combines work-based learning with supporting theory. This twoyear course equips you with additional skills to use in the workplace or provides a base for further study.
A We will be offering the following courses (some courses may be subject to validation):
Entry requirements are based across a broad range, from A Levels and GNVQ/NVQs, to appropriate experience and aptitude. This makes it particularly attractive to those students who wish to combine work with additional study. You may be eligible to progress directly onto the final year of a BA/BSc (Hons) degree course upon successful completion of the Foundation degree.
Progression to a degree involves a further year of study and is often called a ‘Top-up’ year. If you want a course that combines academic theory with practical work experience, a Foundation degree is ideal. A Foundation degree can be taken either full or part-time and credit may be given for relevant previous experience. Coursework can be geared to both paid and voluntary work. Q How do I apply? A For full-time study you must apply through UCAS. For part-time study apply directly to the University of Worcester by contacting the Admissions Office on: 01905 855111 or email: admissions@worc.ac.uk or download an application form from www.worcester.ac.uk/apply

These modular programmes combine both practical and academic elements. An HNC/HND will allow you to progress onto a degree course. Q What is a Higher National Certificate (HNC)?
Q Where are the courses offered?
A This qualification is a part-time award designed for those students working in a job directly related to the HNC course. It is a modular programme and can be topped-up to an HND by taking additional Level Five modules.
A Many of the University of Worcester’s HND and HNC courses are offered in partnership with local Colleges, where there is specific subject specialisation such as Hospitality and Tourism, Manufacturing or Horticulture for example. This offers you the advantages of the additional specialist facilities and expertise provided by the partner College, as well as those at the University of Worcester.
Q What is a Higher National Diploma (HND)? A The HND course is another modular programme and involves two years’ full-time study. On completion of your HND and depending on the grades you achieve, you may progress onto a related degree course at the University of Worcester. If you wish to study part-time for your HND, it may take you three or four years to complete. However, on successful completion, you may still progress onto a degree course which can then also be undertaken on a part-time basis. Progression to a degree involves a further year of study and is often called a ‘Top-up’ year.
Entry to the ‘Top-up’ year is competitive and, although some HND students choose to find work immediately, a significant number of students choose to continue their studies to BA/BSc (Hons) level.
The exact balance depends on the individual course – some involve one or two days’ attendance at the collaborating FE College, while others involve considerable ‘on the job’ learning in the workplace.
If your course requires you to travel regularly between the University of Worcester and another campus or vice versa, student transport to taught sessions is paid for. In most cases, minibus or coach transport is provided. If you prefer, by prior agreement, public or private (mileage) costs may be reimbursed as an alternative.
Q How do I apply? A For full-time study you must apply through UCAS. For part-time study apply directly to the University of Worcester by contacting the Admissions Office on: 01905 855111 or email: admissions@worc.ac.uk

BA, BSc (Hons) Degrees Undergraduate Modular Scheme (UMS) By choosing the UMS at the University of Worcester, you will be aiming for the highest academic standards in your chosen subjects, with the opportunity to broaden your education extensively. We offer a variety of mandatory and optional subject modules so you can tailor your degree to your personal interests, academic goals and career aspirations. You can modify your programme as you progress. This flexible system means that you can study full or part-time and can switch between the two, if needed, during your course. Q What subjects are available? A You will find a full list of subject combinations on pages 250-256 along with UCAS course codes. You will also find the relevant UCAS codes listed on each of the course pages. There is also a range of ‘open’ modules in subjects not otherwise available, including Computing, Modern Foreign Languages and work experience as a Volunteer School Tutor. Q What are Single, Joint and Major Honours? A In the first year, you may study one or two subjects before you decide whether to graduate with Single, Major/Minor or Joint Honours. ‘Single Honours’ allows you to specialise almost entirely in one main subject. ‘Major/Minor Honours’ allows you to focus on your Major subject in-depth as well as gaining a broad knowledge of your Minor subject. ‘Joint Honours’ allows you to divide your time equally between two subjects of equal interest to you. All students initially start on a Joint course but can switch to a Major or Minor during the course. Q How do I choose the best modules for me? A We have a dedicated Programme Advisory Service which will help you find the best pathway through the UMS to suit your personal academic interests and career goals.
28
Q How will I be assessed? A A variety of assessment methods are used to ensure that your final degree classification is an accurate reflection of your undergraduate studies. Each module is assessed as it is completed rather than at the end of your whole degree course. This gives you a good idea of how you are progressing. Q What qualification will I get? A Most students study for an Honours degree (BA/ BSc), for which you must pass modules. Whether you receive a BA or BSc depends on the modules you choose. Other awards (Certificate of Higher Education and Diploma of Higher Education) can be given to students who choose to finish their studies before completing all the required modules. All modules passed are credit rated which enables you to safeguard your achievement if you have to take a study break.
Special Interests With our UMS, we encourage you to follow any additional subjects which are of special interest to you. Depending on which pathway you are following, you will be able to take up to four of these modules. You can select these from ‘Open’ modules in any of the academic subjects or from modules which are not attached to a particular UMS subject. We realise you may need further information before you apply. Our Admissions staff will be happy to talk to you about your needs. Please contact them at the Admissions Office on 01905 855111 or email: admissions@worc.ac.uk

Beginners’ Chinese Intermediate French (post-GCSE) Business French (post-GCSE) Beginners’ German Beginners’ Italian Beginners’ Japanese Beginners’ Spanish
There are no prerequisites. Intermediate French or Business French requires a GCSE pass at A-C grade. Beginners' modules are for students who have not studied the language at A Level. The modules are credit bearing and will contribute to your degree.
The course was tailored for me as a beginner, and I soon picked up the basics. We even followed a German ‘soap’ programme, which was specific to students learning the language, and helped us understand what it would be like making friends, getting work and living there. The facilities were up to date and there was plenty of material to borrow and also the selfaccess centre for students to use for audio and visual tasks. I have a really keen interest in Europe, more so now that I’ve done these two languages. I’m also really proud to say I can put two foreign languages on my CV!
