Urban Meditation Space A House For Two Grid Within A Grid Other Art Work
Urban Meditation Space GSD, CAREER DISCOVERY SUMMER 2012
I created a one-person meditation space in an urban environment that allows the user to reflect and to question the world around us. To detach the user from the urban atmosphere, “the reality”, I eliminated noise, suspended light and isolated the user to create an environment where the user can focus on internal matters. The user is guided through the dim light that comes out from the entrance of the long room.
A HOUSE FOR TWO CAMBRIDGE, MA GSD, CAREER DISCOVERY SUMMER 2012
When we create a living space for two individuals with different lifestyle, we tend to create barriers to “respect” one’s privacy. Instead, I built a house for an herbivore and an omnivore where all space is shared, yet each user’s private space is implied by the designed system of circulation.
Architects play a vital role in staging our culture. Designers have focused on enhancing personal convenience and private space rather than promoting communal and integrative living. Such focus on private ownership has created pockets of cliques, causing spatial gentriďŹ cation and segregation. Consequently, social and cultural boundaries are strengthened rather than broken. In this project, I challenged such idea by creating a forced system in which two individuals with different lifestyle must share each other’s space.
GRID WITHIN A GRID FILM ARCHIVE KENMORE, BOSTON, MA GSD, CAREER DISCOVERY SUMMER 2012
In creating a film archive in Kenmore Square, I merged the boundaries between the interior and the exterior through gridded pattern incisions to reconfigure our perception of private and public space. Through altering our perception of public and private space by redefining the existing use of the grid, I created space that would not be defined along the lines of ownership but by experience.
Our perception of public and private space is determined by the ownership rather than the experience. The inevitable force of our capital driven society has devised a structural system in which short-term economic rationality overpowers the livability and the experience when designing a space. Such structural force under economic rationality has created standardization in our world, which neglects historical, cultural elements and environmental characteristics. Resulting in sites like Kenmore Square. The grid is used to structure and rationalize layout of objects, buildings and cities. Virtually any material object, building, space we wish to acquire are either designed or re-interpreted on a grid. The Grid that is used for privatized intentions has leaped into how we design public space, and how we perceive space in general. I wanted to reimagine our perception and use of the grid as a shape of capital acquisition, but rather as a tool inclusion and immersion.
In using the grid as a tool for opening up spaces and reconďŹ guring our
perception of the public and the private, the grid system that I used in designing the structure becomes part of the already existing grid system that our world is framed in. The gridded incisions not only merge the interior and the exterior, but also invites in the surrounding areas, the city, the country and the world as a whole.
