Staff Professional Development Day - Thursday 28 August This Thursday 28th of August is a pupil free day for staff professional development. In the morning all staff will be participating in a range of learning opportunities related to both School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports and practices related to assessment for learning and effective feedback stategies. In the afternoon all staff member’s will be heading off in all directions to visit other schools – this will provide staff with the valuable opportunity to observe the programs and practices in other schools and to share ideas.

Good Luck Mr Unmack We would like to wish Mr Glenn Unmack well as he takes leave to compete in two gruelling events. He will be competing in two Triathlon World Championship races after qualifying in his age group through races in Geelong and Melbourne. The first is the Half Ironman (known as 'Ironman 70.3') Championship in Mont Treblant, Canada on the 7th September. In this he will swim 1.9km, ride 90km and run 21km with around 4.5 hours of racing. If that sounds pretty straightforward then the second is the famous Hawaii Ironman in Kona, Hawaii on the 11th of October. This race is the pinnacle of Triathlon Sport with a swim of 3.8km, bike ride of 180km and finishing off with a run of 42km with between 91/2 to 10 hours of racing. Mr Unmack is training very hard for these events and we look forward to hearing all of the descriptions and stories on his return. College Council The August Meeting of the Newcomb Secondary College Council took place last Thursday 21st August. Among the items discussed were the College Canteen, the cessation of the Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA) and some VCAL projects. The Council also approved this year's Bike Tour to the Otway's, and a number of Outdoor Education excursions.

YEAR 10 SAILING SCHOOL LEADERSHIP COURSE. Last week from Wednesday to Friday ten of our Year 10 students took up the opportunity to be involved in learning about leadership and sailing at the Victorian Sailing School a campus of Newcomb Secondary College. Mr. Goward, Mr. McCurry, Mr Murphy, Mr Sinclair and current school leader Daniel also attended on different days. On Thursday Mr Honeywell visited the Sailing School to discuss leadership styles with the students. It is hoped the students will see opportunities to use these skills in the future; both at school and in their personal lives. Thank you also to Mr Marchbank and Mr Matthews who taught the students about sailing over the three days.
BIKE TOUR 2014 - TOUR DE OTWAYS Dear Parents/Guardians, Planning is underway for the end-of-year bike tour – Tour de Otways. For the first time the tour is open to Year 7 Students due largely to the College not running a Year 7 camp. The Otway tour is a 5 day tour starting in Camperdown, riding to Port Campbell, then making its way back to Newcomb Secondary College along the Great Ocean Road. A presentation has been made to students at last weeks whole school assembly with a lot of interest being shown. As both Year 7’s and Year 8’s have never been on tour, we are holding a Parent information night to tell you all about it (talk you into it!) YEAR 9 RESIDENTIAL CAMP AT DEAKIN UNIVERSITY. By now, parents should be well aware of the exciting opportunity coming up in Term 4 for all Year 9 students. The Deakin Residential Camp runs from Monday 17 to Tuesday 18 November, and is completely free, including accommodation, meals and travel. Year 9 students will select the friends they would like to share the accommodation with for the night. At university, students stay in what they call “Res” which is short for residence. At the Burwood campus, the students usually share with around 8 – 10 other students. They each have their own furnished bedroom and share the kitchen, living area and bathroom with their friends. The same will apply to the Year 9 students. You will be asked to name up to 6 – 8 friends you would like to share with for the night. There will also be a teacher in a downstairs room, with all the students upstairs. For accommodation, the girls and boys are not permitted to mix, but in choosing groups for activities through the day, we encourage mixed groups. This is a film camp, where your group will write and perform a short film. This will be guided by a Deakin University film student, who will help you with writing, directing and filming. Then the film will be edited in the professional film studios at Deakin and there will be a presentation of all the films on the final afternoon. Please note that parents are invited to join us on Tuesday to take part in lunch and the celebration at the end. If you would like to come, Deakin will arrange transport for you to and from the university, or you are most welcome to make your own way there. Please let me know as soon as possible if this is an option you would like to consider. We are excited about the camp and hope that nearly all of our Year 9 students will take the opportunity to experience university life first hand. Students need to return their forms to the office as soon as they can or see me if they require a new form. Please call me at school if you have any queries about the camp. AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIP FOR BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU Congratulations to both Travis J (101) and Kane J (72), who fought at The Australian Championships for their Brazilian Jiu Jitsu on Saturday 16 th August, representing De la Riva Jiu Jitsu Academy. Travis fought in both his weight class and also open weight, and won Gold in both. Kane fought in his weight class and won Silver.

SENIOR CONCERT BAND TOUR This years Senior Concert Band Tour was an outstanding success. 53 students along with Mrs Stabryla, Mrs Bourke, Mr Crowther and three parent volunteers - Julie Killey, David Harrison and Tina Terrill travelled around Phillip Island, Grantville, San Remo, Newhaven, Wonthaggi and Leongatha performing for the whole week. Congratulations to all students for their outstanding efforts throughout the week in performing and helping in the kitchen, etc. A big thank you to our Year 12 students for their leadership and organisation of the Trivia, Auction and Party nights. BREAKFAST CLUB: Just a reminder that the school offers a Breakfast Program every Wednesday morning from 8.00am - 8:25am. The Breakfast Club is held in the Language Centre. GEELONG BUCCANEERS AMERICAN FOOTBALL TEAM ARE RECRUITING FOR JUNIOR TEAMS.
