From The Chair
Dear Members, Welcome to the autumn edition of the BBBF magazine. I hope that you managed to find an opportunity to recharge your batteries over the recent Eid holidays and you are ready for the final quarter of another busy year. The Committee will continue, in the final quarter of the year, to build on our solid membership base and seek to attract additional members, particularly from prominent Bahraini family business groups who have strong and historic business ties with the United Kingdom. The Special Interest Groups are actively engaging our members and I strongly encourage you to join one or more of the groups, which is free-of-charge for all BBBF members.
Registration number ISSN 1985-9929
In November, the Chairs of the various British Business Groups (BBG) throughout the GCC will meet in Dubai, to share ideas and discuss mutual cooperation. The meeting will immediately follow the annual showcase “Britain in the Region” conference. I would like to remind you that all the British Business Groups (BBG) in the GCC have signed a Reciprocal Memorandum of Understanding. This will allow BBBF Members to attend any event held by another GGC based BBG, and also at the local member’s admission rate. This benefit continues to be of particular interest to a number of our members who travel extensively in the normal course of business throughout the region.
Association – Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia to hold a joint Poppy Ball, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Bahrain, on Thursday 11th November. All proceeds from the evening will go equally to the Royal Chelsea Hospital Building Fund and the Earl Haig Poppy Fund, which both offer support to retired servicemen and women. We hope that you and your guests will be able to join us and support this very worthy cause.
In November, we will be hosting three Chelsea Pensioners to mark Remembrance Day. The Pensioners will be visiting a number of schools & clubs and they will also lay a wreath to commemorate fallen comrades. We will once again be teaming up with The British Business
We hope that you enjoy this edition and look forward to seeing you, and your guests, at the forthcoming BBBF functions and SIG events – see Page 5 for details.
A special mention also to our corporate sponsors, Gulf Air, HSBC Bank, RSA and AXA who continue to be a great source of financial support and generous encouragement to the BBBF and the activities we undertake.
With kind regards Khalid Al Zayani Chair

UK Trade and Investment Events After a long hot and humid summer the UKTI team in Bahrain are looking forward to a cool and busy autumn with business picking up rapidly in the next few weeks. By the time this magazine is at the press, the UKTI Bahrain team will have already participated in the Financial Services Roadshow in the UK during September. UKTI officers from across the Gulf and China toured the UK (Leeds, Birmingham, London), presenting opportunities in their respective markets to UK companies in Financial & Professional Services sectors. September will also see visits to Bahrain from two of our UKTI Middle East and North Africa “hub” colleagues, Meghna Elder and Camille Pascual. Meghna and Camille will be visiting Bahrain for the first time on 20-21 September to find out more about opportunities here first-hand and also to help develop their strategies for marketing UKTI services across the MENA region, including Bahrain. Meghna and Camille will attend the September BBBF lunch, and will hold a pre-lunch reception at 11am at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Also available at the September lunch will be marketing materials on Doing Business in Bahrain, produced with the support of Camille’s team. Into October and we are very excited about the possibility of working with some individual companies on tailored events at the Embassy in Bahrain. However, the real highlight of the month will be a BBBF Members evening event at the Residence, provisionally scheduled for 20 October - more info to follow on that from the BBBF Committee. 2

Team training events and more UKTI group visits lead us to some of the bigger events in the calendar, not least the World Islamic Banking Conference (WIBC), for which we are looking forward to welcoming a large delegation of UK-based companies with expertise in Islamic Finance. A reception at the Residence is scheduled for our visiting guests and local contacts in the financial services sector on the evening of 22 November. Those who enjoyed last year’s event will be dusting off their umbrellas as we speak. Hopefully there will be no need for a tent this year! Out of WIBC, into GCOC, which is our Gulf Commercial Officers Conference, this year being held in Dubai on 23 November and will see UKTI commercial officers from around the Gulf discussing regional issues. Immediately after GCOC we will also be taking part in Britain in the Region, a major conference in the UAE which gives a wide range of UK companies, both new and experienced in the region, the opportunity to develop their understanding and contacts in Gulf markets. 2011 gets off to a busy start with trade missions lined up for Jan, Feb, March and (tbc) April. The first, on 19-20 January, will focus on water and environment companies, who will visit Bahrain after a week in Saudi Arabia. The BBBF monthly meeting will be held on the evening of 20 January to enable the visiting delegates to mingle with Bahraini companies and UK companies already here. In February, we can now confirm that a delegation of companies that work in the airports sector will visit Bahrain, and then go onto further meetings in Qatar. March will see the biannual Middle East Oil Show come
From Her Majesty's Ambassador
I am sure many of us are greeting the last weeks of summer with a mixture of sadness and relief. It is the end of what I hope has been the chance to spend plenty of time with friends or family and to recharge. But it has also been one of the longest hottest summers people here can remember, heat and humidity made all the more challenging by the conjunction of Ramadan. For those of us who have been here for at least part of
the summer, it was of course the chance to take forward all those internal matters - policy reviews, resource assessments, planning to ensure as much as possible is in place ahead of the autumn. I was also able to get to a good number of the Ramadan majalis. In this edition of the BBBF Magazine is an outline of what lies ahead for the Embassy’s UK Trade & Investment Team in the coming quarter - a good list of events on top of the dayto-day business of helping UK companies. Politically there are the elections to the Lower House of Parliament, scheduled for
to the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre and a UK pavillion coordinated by the Energy Industries Council. As in prevoius years, UKTI Bahrain will host a welcome reception for the UK pavillion and local contacts at the Residence on the evening of 16th March. This year, for the first time, the Energy Industries Council and its members will spend another day in Bahrain to meet organisations and companies in the oil and gas sector. Finally, with a date still to be confirmed, we will be working up plans for a trade mission in the financial and professional services sector at the beginning of the 2011-12 financial year. If you are interested in any of the above activities and would like more information please visit the website www.ukinbahrain.fco.gov.uk or email the team on UKTIBahrain@fco.gov.uk
23 October; progress for us to make on the UK Bahrain Joint Steering Committe, initiated at the meeting between His Majesty King Hamad and Prime Minister David Cameron earlier this year; and there’s the annual IISS Manama Dialogue, at which we hope to see a strong UK delegation. In the UK we also have the Strategic Defence and Security Review and the Government Spending Review, both due in the next couple of months, and both of which may have a significant impact on our work.
period ahead. As the temperature cools down, business will hopefully hot up, so I wish everyone a successful autumn.
There is clearly an exiting and challenging

Honorary BBBF Lifetime Membership for BCCI Chairman
Bahrain British Business Forum Chairman Mr. Khalid Zayani, part of a senior BBBF delegation which included British Ambassador to Bahrain Mr. Jamie Bowden, presented Chairman of the Bahrain Chamber for Commerce and Industry Dr. Essam Fakhro with an honorary BBBF lifetime membership in August to mark the recent MoU between the two organisations and in recognition of Dr. Essam Fakhro’s ongoing business interest and support of trade
between Bahrain and the United Kingdom. The ceremony was part of a meeting between the BBBF and BCCI which took place at the BCCI headquarters. Mr. Zayani, Dr. Fakhro and Mr. Bowden discussed ideas to encourage joint ventures between the UK and Bahrain. “Our two organisations share a deep-rooted mutual interest in building long term partnerships and joint ventures that will help to
sustain and grow both of our economies” said Mr. Zayani. “The British Embassy looks forward to working with the BCCI and the BBBF to increase the flow of trade and investment in both directions between Bahrain and the UK” said Mr Bowden. Amongst the key focuses of the discussion were areas where British companies can take advantage of Bahrain’s strategic
position as a gateway to the Gulf region, as well as manufacturing businesses that utilize energy and natural resources available in Bahrain and at the same time contribute to developing the local Bahraini skilled workforce. “We will continue to target key areas of commerce where we have complementary skills and I look forward to more BCCI members joining the BBBF to help us to achieve our shared goals” said Dr Fakhro.
About the
Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry In 1939, the first Chamber of Commerce in the Arabian Gulf was established in Bahrain under the name of the “General Traders’ Association” and continued under that name until 1945 when the name was changed to “Bahrain Chamber of Commerce”. In 1967 it acquired the present name “Bahrain Chamber of Commerce & Industry”. The BCCI is considered one of the leading Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the region. It has kept pace with economic development in Bahrain since its inception. The Chamber has played an effective role in enhancing the importance of the role played by the private commercial and industrial sector in the country’s development. Since its launch, the Chamber has also contributed to the welfare and prosperity of the society through the development and support of its commercial and economic events, as well as providing various services to such events and broadening their scope to keep up with the aims of economic development in Bahrain. 8

The British Embassy - A User’s Guide
Rupert Potter, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Bahrain addressed the BBBF Lunch meeting in September. The following is a redacted version of his presentation. “The Foreign & Commonwealth Office and its Embassies overseas are service providers to the British public - they develop partnerships to do things. If our customers, our users, wish to get the most out of us, it helps to know what we can, and importantly, what we can-not do. Some people think we spend our time eating Ferrero Rocher and attending lavish receptions. Yes we go to events; but the BBBF knows better than most, events are where friendships and contacts are made, where business is discussed, where the news beyond the headlines is shared. Some people think we all went to Oxbridge and rue the end of the Empire. Yes we have some Oxbridge graduates, but we are becoming ever more diverse and more representative of the British population as a whole. And we are encouraging more staff to work outside the office then return; enabling us to better understand and operate in the world around us. And some people think 10 Forum
we are all spies. Certainly we need to know what’s going on. If we don’t then we are not giving sound advice to our political masters, to British companies, to British citizens. But knowing what is going on and interfering in another country’s internal affairs are very different. We do not interfere - it’s unacceptable and foolish; and we have much else to be getting on with. The FCO has three overarching objectives: - Safeguard Britain’s national security by countering terrorism and weapons proliferation, and working to reduce conflict. - Build Britain’s prosperity by increasing exports and investment, opening markets, ensuring access to resources, and promoting sustainable global growth. - Support British nationals around the world through modern and efficient consular services. From these all of our individual Embassy objectives flow, including here. The FCO as a whole has 14,400 staff, 2/3rds of whom are locally engaged. It costs £2.2 billion per year, or 0.5% of government spending. A combination of the Defence and Security Review and the Spending Review, both due this autumn, are likely to alter this picture. In structure the Embassy in Bahrain is fairly typical - divided up into sections covering political; defence; press and public affairs; consular; management; and trade & investment.
Political work is the part often associated with traditional diplomacy; and it is the part hardest to describe in tangible terms. Many may wonder what difference can be made by talking about the MiddleEast Peace Process, about counter terrorism and counter proliferation, climate change or the United Nations. At the most basic level, if we are talking then our countries are probably not fighting. Beyond that, if we are talking then we are better understanding each other. We are building friendships and trust. And hopefully, ultimately, we are finding solutions to common problems; compromises that allow us to live in peace and safety, and afford an environment in which to prosper. Closely connected to this is the work of our defence section. At the heart of the UK Bahrain military partnership is the UK presence here - the Royal Navy has 4 mine hunters based at Mina Salman and a maritime HQ co-located with the US 5 th Fleet. The Headquarters has both national responsibilities within the region and works within a broad coalition of Navies, co-operating in practical ways on issues such as counter-narcotics and counter-piracy. The RAF also maintains a small base at the international airport. In addition, the UK provides training for the Bahraini forces and supports visits in both directions. The UK Bahrain defence relationship is central to our mutual strategic security in the region. The role of our Press and
Public Affairs section may appear self explanatory. The Embassy recognises the importance of understanding what our audience is thinking. Equally we know the importance of helping people understand what we are doing and why. Our two man team run campaigns in support of the Embassy’s work, monitor the press and media, and where issues concern the UK, consider whether we should respond and how. They also maintain our website – http:// ukinbahrain.fco.gov.uk/en/ This site is a window on all aspects of Embassy activity, including the projects we run in Bahrain, from helping to support the emerging Bahraini co-operative movement to working with the Be Free Centre and TRA on combating child abuse on the internet. Our Management Section is the group that keeps us running. These are the long-suffering ones within any organisation who only hear from us when we think our expenses claim isn’t right or when the printer’s broken. They keep our cars going, our gardens ready, our messages delivered, our CPRs sorted. In any organisation, if this team gets it right, everyone else is enabled. Our Consular pair provide support for UK citizens. This includes notarial services, support for prisoners, patients in hospital, or for those recently bereaved. They work on contingency planning and preparedness, a central part of which is of course encouraging British citizens to register on Locate. For those of you
who haven’t done so, I do encourage you - it’s pretty easy. You can use our website to get to it. And registering won’t be used for tax purposes - honest. It’s also worth saying a quick word on what Consular Section don’t do. They don’t do visas. This was always run by UK Border Agency. Visa applications for Bahrain residents and nationals are taken through the application centre at the Financial Harbour and are now processed out of our Embassy in Abu Dhabi. This is part of a global hubbing process. As of July Consular section no longer issues passports here, also because we have created hubs in various parts of the world. For Bahrain this is Dusseldorf; and the details of how to apply from here are also on our website. Consular Section cannot offer legal advice; cannot get people out of prison; give people money; or over-ride local law. They can use local knowledge to help people better understand and assess their options, provide moral support and help communicate with family and friends, and can try to ensure due process is followed and detainees are properly looked after. Finally UK Trade & Investment is the section with which I expect you will all be most familiar. The core of their business is the Overseas Market Introduction Service, or OMIS; through which they help UK-based businesses identify opportunities in Bahrain. The UKTI team can provide market research into potential partners or customers, help with specific contacts, set up meetings or hold
events. The service is bespoke, tailored, individual and impartial. It is also chargeable, but largely subsidised. The team have revenue targets, which doubtless like your businesses always increase year on year; and I will blow their trumpet by saying since they were introduced they have always exceeded them. The “Investment” part of UKTI refers to promoting Inward Investment into the UK - a burgeoning area of activity. It includes working with London-based colleagues to identify and promote specific investment opportunities suitable for Gulf investors. The UKTI team also ensure the UK Bahrain MoU on Trade and Economic Cooperation delivers results - such as the Double Taxation Agreement and co-operation on performance budgeting. They host visits in support of UK industry, many of which you will have been involved with – His Royal Highness the Duke of York, the Lord Mayor of the City of London, the Bar Council. And they work with the UKTI regional and marketing centres for the Middle-East and North-Africa, based in Dubai. Through all this, working with you - the BBBF - is a priority. It’s a partnership through which we can learn and hopefully better support UK business. So thank you to everyone. This is all well and good you might say; but is it strategic? Who has the overview? That of course is where the Ambassador comes in. He is the one where it all comes together - who juggles competing demands, who works out where best to put our efforts, and how.
In addition to this, at the meeting between His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa and Prime Minister David Cameron, a Joint Steering Committee was established. This Committee will not only oversee the breadth of the relationship and steer existing work, but look to where we can do more, to ensure both the UK and Bahrain derive maximum benefit from what is an exceptionally close and trusting friendship. I would like to close, perhaps incongruously, with a final thought on the UK’s standing in the world. I choose this because it is as the heart of our ability to achieve our goals. Many would argue we are now in a position of managed decline, that in the face of geo-political shifts we cannot maintain our influence, that we must accept our place as a small island off mainland Europe. I don’t subscribe to this view. We are innovators and entrepreneurs, we excel in the military, science, art, education and sport - although some may laugh at that after England’s performance in the world cup this summer. We are fortunate to have English as the language of international law and communications. In GDP terms, we are the 6th largest economy. We are
an active member of more international organisations than any other country. Only if we lose our self-belief to cynicism and self-doubt will the results of any negativity be realised. Of course we cannot rest in this position - we must continue to strive. In this day and age, no state large or small, can achieve much without partnerships. As I mentioned at the start, that is why the Embassy is here, to develop partnerships that do things. It is something I believe both the British and the Bahrainis happen to be very good at. We both understand the importance and we built trust - it is one of the reasons why the UK Bahrain partnership is so valuable. At the end of Andrew Marr’s History of Modern Britain he says something I also believe, something which I think applies to Bahrain as it does to the UK. “In global terms, to be born British remains a wonderful stroke of luck.” But that’s enough jingoism. I hope this has opened the doors on the Embassy a little, and provided you, our users, with a bit of an insight. I am happy to take questions any time you see me with a Ferrero Rocher in my hand. Thank you very much.” Forum 11
Special Interest Groups Learning about the Chain of Success “The Marriott Way”
BBBF Organisational Effectiveness Group holds third meeting at Capital Club… The “chain of success” was the key focus of Bahrain British Business Forum (BBBF) Organisational Effectiveness Group's third seminar in June at the Capital Club in Bahrain Financial Harbour. The session featured guest speaker Teodor Ardeleanu, Director of Rooms Operations at the Marriott Executive Apartments. Ardeleanu detailed how the Marriott Group fosters an empowering culture that allows staff to take the initiative in how to best serve customers within the acceptable framework of global operating standards. This culture, which he calls the “chain of success”, ensures consistency of experience for customers around the world.
“I recruit most of my people based on their smile and their attitude – the other skills you can train for. It is much harder to turn a pessimist into an optimist or to turn those who prefer the background into natural ‘people’s people’,” he remarked. In his presentation, Ardeleanu outlined the process for recruitment, training and engagement throughout the group and outlined how “the chain of success” is created. “This is our third meeting and so far we have focused on how to open up organisations and how to learn from companies that engage and empower their workforce in the way the Marriott group clearly
do,” said Jill Boggiss, head of BBBF Organisational Effectiveness group. She also revealed that she plans on using a workshop format for the upcoming session. Members will come prepared to collaborate and help a group member with a specific organisational issue.
“There is so much variety and depth of experience within the group, so it will be interesting to hear different ideas on the same topic,” Boggiss added. “I encourage anyone who faces organisational issues who needs some input, or if you would like to join our group contact me via the BBBF.”
STOP PRESS - Special Interest Group Networking event at the British Embassy As a way of demonstrating what the Special Interest Groups (SIGs) are all about we have decided to have an evening event at the British Embassy on October 20th. This will be a chance for members and their guests to come and find out about the groups and to get more involved with areas that they find interesting or expect to help develop their business. We are in the early stages of planning this but our intention is to do the following. To work with the BCCI, the Oxford Business group and the Economic Development Board- if possible we will also get Tamkeen, and the advisers 12 Forum
to the various initiatives that help businesses, to come and showcase the various schemes and support available to businesses in Bahrain together with the SIG groups. As usual Hill & Knowlton will support us by publicising the event and helping me to shape it. Andrew Mead will be on hand to outline the benefits of utilising the Forum magazine – either through free editorial or paid advertising and can advise members on the kind of articles he is able to include. Phil Weymouth will be on hand to capture the event on film and can explain how his services can help BBBF businesses.
Special Interest Groups Special Interest Group - Security
First impressions & Standards – Do they count for anything – Is something that I would suggest that most Security Managers will be thinking when entering an establishment, wherever they may be in the world, as it says so much about the organisation that are not only securing the location but also the organisation within and of course managing that location. Here in Bahrain you see many blue shirted Security Officers around the country securing a range of differing establishments and in the most doing a great job with minimal resources but there are some that will catch your eye. Why?
Well there could be many reasons but what concerned me this past few summer months was of course the blistering heat and what were companies doing to take care of their Security Officers who were standing post for many hours in what I believe has been the hottest summer months for some 14 Forum
time now and especially during the Holy Month of Ramadan. I take my hat off to those Security Officers who completed their tasks in such conditions but some questions need to be asked of security companies during the tendering process and pre-deployment, so as to improve the actual working conditions in the workplace to ensure that the Security Officer can complete his duties in such a manner so as to give that First Impression of Confidence & Professionalism. Things such as days off, health care, decent accommodation, laundry facilities and when on duty easy access to drinking water and air conditioned shelter should be prerequisites.
and should be considered: 1. On signing your lease agreement change your locks 2. All entrances, including service doors and gates, should have quality locks – preferably deadbolt 3. Do not leave keys hidden outside the home, it will be noticed 4. Keep doors locked even when you or family members are at home 5. Have window locks installed on all windows and use them 6. Consider the use of burglar or intrusion alarms
Meetings: Although the hot summer months saw many people escaping the heat the SIG (Security) has still been busy here in Bahrain and has even got one of its committee members assisting with the elections in Afghanistan of which we hope to have an insiders report in the next edition of the Forum Magazine. Meetings took place at the Capital Club and the British Club and covered Regional Briefings and Local Updates by a number of security and business professionals. Both meetings encouraged networking possibilities in a social forum where in both cases the management & staff of the venues went out of their way to assist and to make the events the success that they were.
7. Consider timers for your all lights 8. Ensure your contact details are up to date
Residential Security: First Impressions & Standards can also be adapted to your home and how well a potential burglar will weigh his or her judgement on entering you home or not. I mention this as we are still receiving reports of burglaries taking place, be it compound located or stand alone villas due to the lack of basic security principles being put in place which one hopes are covered by companies in their orientation packages / briefings. So as to act as a reminder here are a few points that should act as a checklist
9. Challenge your landlord to prove the security guards and or watchmen he employs are MoI approved and trained This list is just a snapshot from a more informative checklist under the Personal Security “umbrella” that company security managers should have but for those of you who do not have such a dedicated person please contact the BBBF office who will collate enquiries accordingly.
A special note of thanks must go to the British Club staff who really pulled out all the stops as a power outage a couple of hours before the meeting meant a swift move of furniture and equipment from the Ascot Room to upstairs to the Gallery Bar. This was achieved in record time and in blistering temperatures. An unbelievable feat that was very much appreciated by all those attending, “a job well done to all concerned”. Hail & Farewell saw the combined membership of the SIG (Security) & OSAC saying farewell to Lance Bailey the Regional

Security Officer at the US Embassy and the committee welcoming his replacement Mark Sullo who will be taking up his new post mid September. Lance was in post for three years and was pivotal in driving forward such projects as security awareness in the private sector, to name one of many, and worked continuously in raising the combined OSAC & BBBF SIG (Security) profile at the Ministry of Interior and at the State Department in Washington. Lance is pictured above right being presented a NCIS shirt from committee member Matt Butler.
Bahrain has named Major General Abdul Latif Al Zayani, Chief of Public Security at the Ministry of the Interior, (pictured above) as the next Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). We were very fortunate to have the General speak at one of our earlier meetings where
he presented his vision on the Private Sector Security Awareness Project, which is where Policing meets the Private Sector to work together in raising the security awareness in all areas. We extend our best wishes to him. His replacement has been announced and is pictured below. Major General Tariq bin Dayneh a policeman who joined the Ministry of Interior in 1973 who has headed a number of civil policing operations and has received international training including initially as a lawyer then as a pilot. Getting our message across As the member on the committee responsible for PR and communications I wanted to find a way of getting the right kind of coverage for our regular lunches. I also wanted to be more consistent in the way the BBBF communicates about what it is doing. I have a background in communications and so I know what is involved in creating and maintaining a positive corporate image and also how much time this takes. During some conversations with Hill & Knowlton about some other business ideas I asked if they would be interested to support our activities. I outlined plans for the organisational effectiveness group and H&K were interested to take part and to help promote this as this is in their area of the market. This is all still work in progress but since we started this in March we have developed a great working relationship with H&K-ers Hassan Al-Jundi

and Julia Atherton Dandy, and we have seen a big increase in our coverage, particularly in the Arabic papers. This is very important for our goal of attracting new Bahraini members. The recent lunch with the BCCI is a good example of how we can work together to get a great result – the BCCI’s head of media relations Isa al-Bastaki, Dena and Natasha in the BBBF office, Phil Weymouth taking great photos and Hassan at H&K managing the process. We got blanket coverage with the message we wanted and a photo with nearly every article – calculating the worth of coverage is always interesting and our coverage on the following day would have cost us over 10,000 dinars if it had been as an advertisement. I have invited H&K to write some pieces for the magazine about how to be more effective at communications and they will be presenting a workshop for the
organisational effectiveness group about “Getting the message across” which applies to all organisations, large or small – commercial or not for profit. I want to thank Chris Pratt (H&K Bahrain GM) for taking a chance on this partnership arrangement and wish him well back in the UK in his Energy practice role, and congratulate Julia Atherton-Dandy as new head of the Bahrain office - I wish her all the best for the future. However, my day-to-day contact and the person who has made the most difference to our coverage and to reducing

my stress level is Hassan al-Jundi. He has been a complete pleasure to work with over the last six months – and I look forward to continuing this successful arrangement. I would like to find more people in the membership who would be willing to work with me to raise our profile and to support our ongoing events. So if there are any members who have services that would help the BBBF to be more successful and would be happy to discuss how we could help support them in return, please contact me. jill.boggiss@bh.ey.com
Communicating in a Changing Economic Era Ironically, the field of public relations suffers from bad PR. Movie and TV show characters who work in what is referred to as public relations – such as Sex and the City’s Samantha – are often portrayed as absurd caricatures; at best, funloving party addicts and at worst, dodgy individuals with questionable motives who love to manipulate reality, or make it up altogether. These characters seen by people around the world has helped to create such a negative connotation that leads to words like “fluff” being applied to PR professionals. Take it from a corporate PR person. The reality is entirely different. Part of the problem is in the very inherent nature of PR. It is a specialty that is extremely varied, nuanced, and that most think of as intangible. It is not a billboard you can see or a brochure you can flip through. In its simplest form, PR (or communications as we like to call it) can be summed up as “reputation management”. In other words, advertising may build awareness of your organisation, but real PR gets to the nitty gritty of your business objectives and communicates effectively to your stakeholders. The proof? Poor communications very quickly leave a oncerespected brand in ruin. The recent BP oil spill fiasco, Goldman Sachs’ role in the economic crisis, and Toyota’s product recalls
are classic examples of PR gone wrong. The reputation recovery process will cost their businesses millions of needless dollars. Compounding the challenge for companies is the fact that the communications world is undergoing a seismic shift. Traditional media outlets – such as newspapers and broadcast - are not as efficient as they once were in distributing your messages to modern audiences. They must now be mixed with millions of digital voices - social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and blogs. This is not a distant phenomenon either. The number of social media users in the Middle East is increasing rapidly owed largely to a youthful population and increasing internet penetration. The figures abound; Nearly 60 million internet users in the Arab world, more than one-third of people rely on the internet to get their news at least as much as conventional print media, 60% of Facebook users in the regional are under 25 years of age - In Bahrain, almost half of this key demographic uses Facebook. Savvy organisations utilise these modern channels to engage their stakeholders because they know that by staying quiet, they are basically allowing someone else tell their story for them. When you add those millions of voices to an unforeseen event like the recent global financial crisis, you get the perfect catalyst for change. The crisis left in its wake
battered reputations of many of the world’s most trusted brands, and brought about an era where companies are under increasing public pressure to adopt more transparent practices. This has made maintaining a good reputation more challenging and more important than ever before. Companies that get this right, those who take the time to communicate what they stand for and who take the trouble to communicate clearly, honestly and effectively will be those who can weather any storm because people will trust what they say and know that they mean what they say. Organisations in the Middle East are beginning to take notice. They have seen what happens when a company is caught unprepared, and realise that being open
from Hill & Knowlton and willing to communicate builds reputations and protects their organizations from all kinds of threats. It is no longer sufficient for a company just to emphasise the positive and say “no comment” to the negative; people have to provide honest and objective information to stakeholders in order to control their reputation. The recent crisis presents all companies with opportunities to change the way they work and the relationship that they have with key stakeholders and managing communications is a very powerful way to ensure the message gets across. Financial News Investcorp Rebounds Strongly with Profits of $102.2 Million for 12 months ended June 2010 Investcorp, the asset management firm specialising in alternative investments, has announced its results for the 12 months ended June 30, 2010 (FY10). FY10 marked a decisive return to profitability for Investcorp, with net income of $102.2 million demonstrating not only the robustness of the firm’s business model and the enduring power of its Gulf franchise and relationships, but also the actions taken this year by the firm to meet changing conditions and exploit future opportunities. In a twelve month period marked by strong headwinds from a still volatile global financial environment, Investcorp’s gross operating profits grew to $365.1 million and client assets under management grew to $9.7 billion. These strong results reflect an increase in the flow of deal acquisitions and exits and a returning appetite amongst Gulf investors for attractive private equity and real estate investments, combined with substantial inflows into the hedge fund platform from institutional clients. Highlights for the period: • Fee income increased by 69% to $218.9 million (FY09: $129.4 million). • Client assets under management rose to $9.7 billion (FY09 $8.8 billion). • Total placement and fund-raising activities in FY10 raised $1.4 billion (FY09 $1.1 billion). 20 Forum

The firm made its third growth capital investment in Gulf Cryo, the leading industrial gases company founded by the Al Huneidi family in Kuwait, through the Gulf Opportunity Fund. • In real estate, the firm deployed $69 million of acquisition funding in FY10. • Two real estate acquisitions were in retail shopping centres, which were placed with clients as a single portfolio, US Retail V, and a third was an investment in the W Hotel at South Beach, Florida. • There were several exits, with total realisation proceeds of $545 million in FY10. In private equity, the firm completed the exit of Avecia’s Biologics business and the highly successful sale of American Tire Distributors, which valued the company at $1.3 billion. In real estate the firm closed on the sale of the final properties in the Empire Mountain Village portfolio, and sold a first mortgage loan from the Investcorp Real Estate Credit Fund. •

Investcorp’s hedge funds co-investment portfolio returned approximately 10% on a gross basis over the fiscal year, significantly outperforming the HFRI Composite Index, despite recent periods of extreme market volatility due to European contagion issues. Investcorp raised $1.1 billion of new hedge fund assets from clients in FY10. • Private equity portfolio valuations turned around, reflecting the inherent strength of Investcorp’s portfolio and its careful stewardship of investments in difficult economic conditions. There were several add-on acquisitions made by portfolio companies in the year to assist them in growing value, together with transactions to preserve value and limit risk in portfolio companies by appropriate deleveraging. • Operating and interest expense dropped to $247 million (FY09 $321 million) in FY10 reflecting prudent expense management and reduced interest expense due to deleveraging. • Total liquidity remains strong at $1.4 billion, with a planned medium-term refinancing completed on schedule. Capital adequacy is at 22.9%, substantially above regulatory requirements.
Nemir A. Kirdar, Executive Chairman & CEO, said: “With an impressive and rapid rebound from the challenges of last year, we now have strong upward momentum as we move ahead. Our strong profitability this year proves the robustness of our business model and the enduring power of our Gulf franchise and relationships in the face of the unprecedented stress in global economies and financial markets over the past two years. This rebound also demonstrates the effectiveness of the bold and decisive action we have taken to reshape the Firm to meet changing conditions and to exploit opportunities that are arising as the world economy resets itself. It also shows the real difference Investcorp’s market position and reputation can make in this more difficult environment as our clients recognize the pre-eminent importance of our 28 year track record of sound advice, first class service, transparency and clear alignment of interest."

Do you have a Bank Account in the UK? Do you know exactly what a change of name could mean for your savings? "By the end of this year, the Alliance & Leicester name will disappear from UK high streets." says one of Britain's newspapers. Alliance & Leicester will be consumed finally by Santander which has already done away with the Abbey and Bradford & Bingley brands onshore. And, since the end of May, Alliance & Leicester has come under the Santander banking licence, along with the former Abbey and B&B brands. This is crucial because under the UK regulations, compensation if a bank fails 22 Forum
is based on the banking licence, not the brand. So, for example, if you had an account with more than one of the brands then your compensation would be limited to the maximum £50,000. Santander is not the only one to amalgamate onshore banking licences. By the end of this year, four UK building society brands which previously had their own banking licences will come under one licence. So, anyone with accounts with Nationwide, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Dunfermline building societies needs to be aware of this change. Although it’s very much a worst-case scenario, it means that if you had accounts with more than
one of these societies then your potential compensation is limited to £50,000 across all four brands: currently, you’d have that amount of cover for each brand. And what happens onshore may, in the case of Santander, happen offshore too. In recent months, many of the rates paid by Bradford & Bingley and Alliance & Leicester have been identical. For example, last month B&B and Alliance & Leicester were both offering 3.6% fixed for two years, both on a minimum deposit of £5,000. And on variable rates both were paying 2.75% on 60 day notice accounts. Only
on easy access is there a difference: Alliance & Leicester pays 2.76% and B&B, 2.5%. Alliance & Leicester and Bradford & Bingley are both based in the Isle of Man and that means at the moment, investors in both are covered for up to £50,000. Should they amalgamate the brands under one licence - which would be relatively easy and would save Santander money - then savers with accounts with both B&B and A&L would only be covered for one £50,000. A spokesman for Santander says there is “no change” currently planned for the offshore business but said if any changes are planned, it will “communicate this to our savers in good time”.

Don’t just buy any insurance for the sake of convenience I’m sure that the car that you drive has got an airbag. You can’t see it of course (and I hope you never do) but you will have one neatly tucked away inside the steering wheel, maybe one concealed on the dashboard and more hidden in the side pillars. If so, congratulations, you are driving a very safe brand of car. Airbags are a funny thing, though. You buy them with the car, hoping you never need them. You just know they’re there and you have a certain degree of comfort knowing that if you were unlucky enough to have an accident, it would work. You trust it to work. Well, Motor Insurance is, in many ways, the financial equivalent of that airbag. It also protects you when you have an accident and it’s only then that you discover whether the policy and cover you have meets your expectations. When you’re spending money on one of the biggest financial commitments of your life, it makes sense to apply the same sensible logic you had

when choosing the car and select an insurance product that you are confident will work. This doesn’t mean you need to pay over the odds but saving money on your insurance product is akin to telling the garage to take the airbag out because you’ve never used one. You wouldn’t do it, so take time to make sure you know what you are buying and, perhaps more importantly, what you’re not. Here’s some simple tips:First rule is don’t be tempted by the “free insurance” deal at the Car showroom. They rely on “decision fatigue” and whilst it may be a quick way to organize the paperwork, register the car and get your hands on the keys, for the sake of a few phone calls to an insurer or a brief check online, you may not only save money but find a better product too. Second rule - carefully check the cover that the Insurance Company offers. Not all Motor Insurance products are
the same in Bahrain and the cover that you might expect to be automatic (because it is something you had when you lived in another country) does not necessarily mean that it is included here nor cover what the Dealer says it does. Three, ask about a No Claims Discount. Some Insurers can offer you a much better price if you can prove you are a safe driver. After all, why should you pay the same as someone who has had claims? Four, check whether your policy includes those tan-
gible added extra’s, such as Breakdown cover, Hire Car, 24 hour assistance in the event of an accident and whether they will repair your car at the Main Dealer if the worst happens. To summarise, the key advice is to shop around, not to be swept along by the car buying process and take your time to ask an Insurer yourself about the product features that are important to you. Motoring News McLaren Automotive selects Bahrain as home for regional head office McLaren Automotive has announced the establishment of its regional head office in Bahrain. All distributor-side management, marketing and support functions for the premium high-performance sports car manufacturer will be managed from its new Manama office. The British car company, which was officially launched in March, will begin sales in 2011 with its first ‘pure’ McLaren, the MP4-12C. With only a few weeks to go before the company announces its first dealerships in the region, Ian Gorsuch, McLaren Automotive’s Regional Director for Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific said the company had chosen the Kingdom for its regional office for a number of strong reasons. “With a Formula 1 racetrack, an excellent business environment and its close proximity to one of our major shareholders, Manama was the obvious location for our regional head office,” said Gorsuch. The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir has hosted a Formula 1 Grand Prix for the past seven years and has excellent facilities for performance testing and hosting events. Last year, McLaren Automotive subjected a 12C prototype to extreme hot-weather testing in the heat, dust and humidity of the Gulf summer. Testing was conducted at the BIC as well as on the country’s desert roads. Also, the competitive cost and ease of setting up in 26 Forum
by the company. As such it made good business sense to be based nearby to maintain close contact between the two partners.
Ian Gorsuch the Kingdom, in addition to the attractive lifestyle offered by Bahrain, were major factors in deciding on establishing the office in the Kingdom. On the whole, it was felt that the Bahraini commerical environment was very conducive to doing business on the island. And with Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company (“Mumtalakat”), the investment company for Bahrain, having a 42 per cent stake in McLaren Group as well as a 50 per cent stake in McLaren Automotive, the Kingdom is considered a home away from home
“This is a very positive decision by McLaren Automotive,” said Gorsuch. “We have had close links to the island for some time through our partnership with Mumtalakat, and last year successfully conducted hot-weather testing for the forthcoming 12C here. And now we will be able to take further advantage of the number of excellent opportunities that come from establishing an office in Bahrain.” McLaren Automotive has a rich heritage in producing premium sports cars for the road. The street-legal F1 model, which was launched in 1992, is still regarded as one of the best examples of supercar exotica. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, one of the fastest cars on the streets today, is also the most successful supercar ever in its price
bracket, with over 2,000 cars sold since its 2003 launch. The McLaren MP4-12C is the first in a range of high performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive and represents ‘pure McLaren,’ from its unique engineering to its bespoke design where everything is for a reason. The 12C, and future models within the range, will challenge the world’s best sports cars, benefiting from the expertise and virtuosity of the McLaren Group. The 12C is set to re-write the rules of sports car design through Formula 1-inspired engineering, a revolutionary carbon fibre chassis, and an absolute focus on efficiency and quality. The 12C is set to be built in the UK at the new McLaren Production Centre in Woking. It will go on sale in Europe from spring 2011, followed soon after by the Middle East, where it will take up to 20 percent of the 1,000 12Cs built in its first year.

Volvo and the European Tour announce the new 'Tournament of Champions' Volvo and The European Tour have unveiled a new season starting tournament on the European Tour Schedule. Taking place at the Royal Golf Club in the Kingdom of Bahrain, this special event will be a unique ’Tournament of Champions’ style event and for the first time will see European Tour tournament winners compete together with leading amateurs on one day of the Tournament. The full official event name and logo will be announced at a press conference in Bahrain later this year. The inaugural event will take place from the 27th to 30th January, 2011, with the full support of the Bahrain Economic Development Board. Volvo, one of the most prolific and longest serving supporters of world golf, with over 20 years experience in running worldclass golf tournaments, has title-sponsored over 120 professional golf tournaments and will now be in an elite stable of sponsors with multiple professional tournaments to their name. Innovation is a watchword at Volvo and as such the Tournament has been created, together with IMG - the world’s leading sports, entertainment and media company - and in conjunction with The European Tour Tournament Committee, to be a very special event with unique qualification criteria whereby only winners of previous European Tour tournaments will be eligible. By way of celebrating the very first Tournament, the 2011 event will be widened to a full field of up to 126 players slotting into the January schedule, bringing together both 30 Forum
current and past European Tour winners, including champions of past major events. From 2012 the Tournament will revert to a stream-lined ‘European Tour Tournament of Champions’ anticipated to only include winners of the previous season’s Race to Dubai counting tournaments. Crucially the 2012 and 2013 editions will then move to an earlier January date ensuring the Tournament is then the first full counting event of The European Tour International Schedule. Volvo’s sponsorship covers the golfing spectrum and includes sponsorship of the Volvo Masters Amateur Tour, a global golf series for clients and prospects that covers 25 countries and hundreds of qualifying tournaments culminating in the ‘season ending’ Volvo Masters Amateur World Final. With the creation of this new tournament, Volvo have found an innovative way to combine their grassroots and professional sponsorships whereby leading qualifiers from the Volvo Masters
Amateur Tour will be invited to play ‘real golf’ alongside the professionals on one tournament day at this new event, providing them with firsthand experience of world class professional golf. Bahrain has been chosen as the host destination with the full backing and investment of the Bahrain Economic Development Board who have identified golf as the ideal international marketing platform from which to promote Bahrain with all the associated economic and business benefits such a high profile international golfing tournament brings. The immaculate Montgomerie Course at the Royal Golf Club will host the inaugural event, reopened in 2009 having had a major redevelopment under the experienced eye of eight-time European Tour Order of Merit winner, Colin Montgomerie and European Golf Design. Taking advantage of Bahrain’s natural rough desert terrain and combining it with vast manmade lakes, the desert feel is retained through the
use of sandy waste bunkers and the attractive indigenous vegetation and grasses used in the landscaping with the rolling links-style fairways and undulating greens immaculately maintained. Per Ericsson, President & CEO of Volvo Event Management Golf, explained, "We wanted to create something very special. Today’s announcement is the culmination of those dreams. Golf is unique in that it is the only sport where our clients can truly enjoy the experience of playing alongside the world’s leading golfers in a professional tournament. Golf reflects our company’s values and serves as a remarkably successful market tool and with this in mind we are delighted to be further expanding our commitment to The European Tour." We enjoyed 21 very successful years as sponsors of the season ending Volvo Masters and when we looked to extend our sponsorship portfolio to three events we wanted
to create something really special that would stand out as well as embracing our successful Volvo Masters Amateur Tour. We love the idea of becoming the first event of the season while using the inaugural Championship to celebrate golf. Golf has long been a major part of our sponsorship portfolio as a well proven client relations marketing tool and we believe we have, together with IMG and the European Tour players, created a unique tournament with real longevity. While in 2011 we will follow the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship and will accommodate a full field event in a ‘Celebration of Golf,’ going forward we will look to limit the field focusing on the elite group of Tour winners, marking the start of the new season by celebrating The European Tour champions from the previous year. " He continued, "It was very important for us to create a new tournament that also served as a platform for our amateur programme of which we are very proud and we believe that with this combination, we have the ideal formula for what we believe will become a key tournament on The European Tour international schedule for many years to come." Ericsson concluded, "We have spent a great deal of time looking at venues around the world and decided upon Bahrain as not only has the venue got everything we need but Bahrain Economic Development Board have shown great vision and enthusiasm to host this world class tournament.
Crucially, Bahrain is located in between our biggest market, Europe, and our fastest growing market, Asia, making it the ideal location to host our international clients." George O’Grady, Chief Executive of The European Tour, said: "Volvo’s support of The European Tour has been invaluable to our development and we again thank them for maintaining this strong and powerful partnership. The Kingdom of Bahrain becomes the 38th country to host European Tour competition and our members will look forward to exhibiting their world class skills in this new arena. We would also congratulate the International Management Group for continuing their important support of the Tour Membership by adding another tournament to those which are already stage on The European Tour International Schedule." Guy Kinnings, IMG’s Director of Golf, EAME, added "IMG have been long term supporters of The European Tour having staged over 250 European Tour events over the past 46 years. Coupled with Volvo’s experience and commitment to golf over the past 20 plus years, we are proud to have collaborated on this exciting new tournament. IMG has worked with the Royal Golf Club for many years and shared their goal of hosting a European Tour event so it is very satisfying to see this happen. We are particularly grateful to the support of the Bahrain Economic Development Board whose vision in supporting the Championship was a key factor as we looked at venues."
Welcoming the event, Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board, said: "This is very big news for us. Bahrain has long been known as a business friendly location and gateway for international business looking to access wider markets across the Middle East. However, golf is a very established and important business tool that we have yet to exploit. We have worked hard to bring this event to Bahrain and are very happy that Volvo, IMG and The European Tour have chosen us as host. "Golf has a very strong global presence and we believe it will bring great benefits to Bahrain. We very much look forward to welcoming the players and guests to Bahrain and think this will be a very popular event. We have made great strides to raise the profile of Bahrain on the international stage in recent years, starting with the Bahrain Formula One Grand Prix, the first F1 event in the Middle East. Hosting the curtain raiser for The European Tour will only help us raise our profile further." Shaikh Rashid Bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Chairman of the Royal Golf Club’s owning
company, added, "It is a great honour to be hosting our first full European Tour event and very exciting for all the members and staff. The course reviews have been excellent and it will be very special for us to welcome so many of the world’s best golfers. Working with our course designer, Colin Montgomerie, we believe the course has exactly the right attributes to host a world class golf event and it will be fascinating to see how they tackle the truly unique blend of links and desert golf on offer." The 2010 European Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie, added "It is very exciting for the Royal Golf Club to have been selected to host a full European Tour event and I will feel very proud when Europe’s best players go head to head over The Montgomerie Course, Bahrain. With European Golf Design and the vision of the Royal Golf Club, I think we have created a really superb Championship course and we are looking forward to welcoming the Championship in January." A press conference will be held in Bahrain later this year to announce full details of the event including the full tournament title and to present the new logo.

Bahrain Construction Update Bahrain: Gathering momentum Strong growth predictions and significant state investment in infrastructure, particularly lowcost housing, are boosting confidence in the construction sector’s recovery. The recent announcement that a new steel processing plant is to be developed in the Kingdom is a further fillip. Construction makes up a sizeable portion of the Kingdom’s GDP, having contributed an average of around 9.5% over the past three years. The sector’s output is divided evenly between residential and nonresidential developments, with housing representing 51%, and retail, office space and infrastructure projects making up the remainder. The global financial crisis saw a slowdown in demand for new property developments, causing oversupply in real estate segments such as upperend residential properties and commercial space. However, a report by Business Monitor International released in September forecast nearly 7% growth in the sector in 2010 with $80bn worth of infrastructure projects currently underway.
The Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB) – the state agency tasked with formulating economic policy – and the Central Bank of Bahrain have both predicted that national GDP will expand by a healthy 4% this year, and almost 5% the next. It is expected that the effects of this recovery will gradually be felt in the construction industry. Meanwhile, the state has stepped in with increased spending on infrastructure projects and low-cost housing developments, the latter in response to a high level of demand. Along with projects to upgrade the Kingdom’s road network and improve the power and water grid, the government has revealed plans to build up to 5000 residential units, with tenders to be announced in October. Bahrain-based construction consultant Vladimir Kapusta told local media this month that while Qatar and Saudi Arabia have their own well developed steel processing facilities, Bahrain is dependent
The overall improvement in both the regional and global economy is creating demand for building supplies, in particular steel and cement, placing Bahrain in competion with other countries in the region for materials. In a bid to meet this domestic demand, a $1.2bn project to build a steel plant was launched earlier this year by United Steel (SULB). The plant is a joint venture between Bahrain-based Gulf United Steel Holding Company (Foulath) and Japan’s Yamato Kogyo Company. In March, SULB awarded engineering procurement and construction contracts to two consortiums - one comprising Kobe Steel of Japan and Midrex of the US and the other having SMS Meer and SMS Concast of Germany and Samsung Engineering. The plant will encompass a 1.5m-tonne-a-year direct reduction iron plant, an 800,000-tonne-a-year melt

Bahrain Construction Update Nass Contracting Company progressing in $80 million ASRY quay wall deal As part of a major development and expansion plan Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Co. has awarded a design and build contract for the construction of a 1,380 meter quay wall to Bahrain based Nass Contracting. The $80 million contract comprises the construction of a 1,200m quay wall, with a water depth of up to 12m, designated to receive 300,000 DWT vessels as well as a 180m berth for 40,000 DWT vessels. The contract commenced on 13th December 2009; and in preparation for construction, Nass Contracting had to do a substantial amount of site clearing and leveling including the building of an earth platform to level +3.5 Chart Datum. This earth platform running parallel to the future quay wall supports the piling activities, and is currently the hardstand that the quay wall construction cranes are positioned on for the execution of the works. This innovative and unique
system, in building the quay wall mainly from the land rather than having a marine based spread consisting of barges and associated marine equipment has distinct advantages. Nass Contracting also established a precast yard where the 3,800 quay wall blocks and 344 cope units will be manufactured. The 280m x 30m precast yard is serviced by 2no. 100 tonne gantries and has 41 strategically placed quay wall block moulds and 4 cope moulds. The precast
yard has the capacity to produce 20 quay wall blocks and 2 cope units per day. By end of August 2010 1,117 out of the 3,852 had been cast (29%). The quay wall blocks varying in weight from 44 to 101 tonne are placed by crane and guided into position on the aforementioned screed stone foundation by divers. For quay wall block placing purpose a Demag 2600, 500/800 tonne superlift crawler crane with a 250t trailing counterweight trolley
is used. Progress up to 31st August 2010 can be briefly summed up as follows: Dredging of quay wall trench and main basin is approximately 60% complete. Overall contract completion approximately 26%. The first 580 m of quay and return wall including the corresponding dredged basins are scheduled to be handed over to the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Co. on 13th December 2010.
Bahrain - Saudi Causeway upgrade plans announced According to plans announced in August, the King Fahd Causeway connecting Bahrain with Saudi Arabia is to undergo a massive remodelling that will greatly improve its cargo and passenger capacity as well as reduce travelling time. According to Saleh Al Khileiwi, the Saudi Customs manager and King Fahd Causeway director-general, tenders will be called shortly for the design and 34 Forum
construction work, which he said would see a 167% increase in the capacity of the link, allowing up to 100m travellers to pass between the two countries annually. Currently, some 50,000 vehicles a day make the 25-km crossing daily, with total passenger numbers estimated at around 18m a year. Among the details of the project are the construction of two artificial islands, each 400,000 sq metres
in area, located at either end of the causeway, and parking yards for 400 heavy vehicles at each end. The plan also calls for additional traffic lanes on the 25-year-old causeway itself, and an increase in the number of approach lanes on both the Bahraini and Saudi ends of the structure. While the initial work is scheduled to be completed by 2015, Al Khileiwi said
the process of expanding the carrying capacity of the bridge would continue for 25 years beyond that date. No cost estimate has been given for the short-term upgrade or the long-term development, nor details as to how the costs will be divided up between the two sides. What is clear is that the project will both benefit the Bahraini economy and link it even more closely to that of Saudi Arabia.
Atkins wins role to support Bahrain’s planning and development Atkins, the engineering design consultancy, is to help shape Bahrain’s plans for sustainable economic growth following its appointment by the Ministry of Municipalities and Agriculture (MoMA) to implement the Kingdom’s National Planning and Development Strategy (NPDS). The scheme will be
implemented in four stages over 13 months, with the aim of providing better co-ordination for future projects, optimising productivity, promoting economic diversity and boosting GDP. The project will be steered by Atkins’ Management Consultancy business but will draw on expertise from across the Group, including planners, economists, transport engineers, and coastal and environmental
specialists. It will also include seconded staff from MoMA and other ministries as part of a partnership approach. Will Myles, client director for the project, says: “There’s a great deal of complexity involved in delivering a project that will influence development across the Kingdom for the next 20 years, so our deep knowledge and understanding of Bahrain will be of enormous benefit.”
Atkins is the official engineering design services provider for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Atkins has been associated with the NPDS since its formative phases and played a key partner role in developing the original national strategy in 2005. Rescue of Endangered Sea Turtle Eggs by FedEx In July, FedEx Custom Critical and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation commenced their joint efforts to transport hundreds of loggerhead sea turtle nests containing thousands of eggs to Florida’s Atlantic Coast, protecting the hatchlings from potential impacts of the oil spill in the northern Gulf of Mexico.
become known for reliably transporting some of the world’s most precious cargo – from penguins and dolphins to pandas and sea otters. For the sea turtle egg rescue, FedEx has combined its animal shipment expertise with knowledge from the Unified Command Wildlife Branch to create a safe and secure transportation solution.
This first official nest extraction took place in the early morning hours on the shores of the St. Joseph Peninsula in Florida. A team of biologists unearthed the nest and transferred the eggs into speciallydesigned Styrofoam containers, which were then moved to the St. Joseph Bay State Buffer Preserve. From there, this nest – and another extracted from the Tyndall Air Force Base – was loaded into a FedEx Custom Critical air-ride suspension, temperaturecontrolled vehicle for the relocation to the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
“Our support for the Gulf Coast turtle egg rescue extends our longstanding commitment to support our communities in times of need,” said the Country Manager of FedEx in Bahrain, Mr. Faisal Alamoudy. “FedEx has provided logistics expertise, in-kind shipping and funding for disaster preparedness, relief and recovery. We have worked with a number of fine organisations, and when the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation approached us to provide support for this momentous effort, we were proud to say yes.”

On the business side, our successful series of monthly dinners continued when we welcomed Dr Malcolm Wright, Safety Specialist (Arensco) who provided an interesting talk on the role of safety in today’s modern industry. A number of interesting speakers are lined up for the later part of the year so watch out for the flyers and don’t forget that BBBF members are most welcome to attend. On the social front the programme was quieter due to the heavy vacation period, however, a very successful World Cup Final Curry Supper was hosted by David Harries at his residence. Despite England not being in the final the evening was enjoyed by all. The next major event will be the BBBF / BBA Poppy Ball scheduled for 11 November at the Crowne Plaza, Bahrain. This is usually a very popular event and we look forward to once again joining forces with our friends in Bahrain in the interest of the usual charitable causes. We in EP are also busy practicing for the joint BBBF / BBA Golf Day at Riffa Golf Club, Bahrain which is planned during the first half of 2011. How is the practicing going at the BBBF? I am sure it has been noticed that we have been experiencing some difficulties maintaining our website due to the loss of the necessary skill set.
I am now happy to report that normal service has been resumed thanks to the appearance of a “Knight in Shining Armour” who has brought everything up to date and who will maintain it going forward. US Senator tours BMMI-managed USAID logistics operations in Djibouti Free Zone Manager, BMMI Djibouti
said: “Djibouti is a vital and strategic operation for the BMMI Group and a considerable part of our business here is with USAID. BMMI was first awarded the USAID preposition contract in 2007 and last year we handled more than 45,000 GMT of goods. Our facility deals with 35 to 50 containers daily and we have a storage capacity of 250 containers around the pre-position, which is a unique feature in Djibouti. We are very pleased that Senator Burris had the opportunity to visit our facility and witness the developments there firsthand.”
Senator Burris (fourth from left) and his delegation, together with Stephanie Funk (USAID representative in Djibouti), Hany Elabe (Procurement & Operations Assistant USAID Djibouti), Sheriff Muhtaseb (DFZ Free Zone Manager), Mahboub Abdallah (Senior Inbound & USAID officer), Olivier Fricot (BMMI Country Manager)
United States Senator Roland W. Burris (US Senator for Illinois, Democratic Party) visited Economic Zones World’s Djibouti Free Zone (DFZ) as part of his visit to see the BMMI-managed United States Agency for International Development (USAID) operations in the Free Zone. Senator Burris, who in 2009 took over the Illinois Senate seat vacated by President Barack Obama after his election as President, was welcomed by Sherif Muhtaseb, Manager, Djibouti Free Zone, Olivier Fricot, Country Manager, BMMI Djibouti, and other officials from DFZ and BMMI at the Free Zone. contract services and supply group manages the receipt, handling and storage of 45,000 tonnes per annum of products, and re-delivery of processed commodities owned by USAID in Djibouti. The USAID cargo is distributed mainly to Ethiopia by road, and smaller volumes are distributed by sea to Sudan and Kenya. The BMMI 9100 square metre warehouse in the DFZ is the only Pre-Position Warehouse outside the United States that prepositions American food aid for any destination. The facility pre-positions USAID food aid for Africa and Asia, and reduces delivery times by 75 percent. The warehouse holds stocks of corn-soy blend (CSB), yellow split peas and vegetable oil, which will
be used to respond to emergencies in and around the region, saving a lag time of three to four months if the same food were to be dispatched from ports in the U.S. Ali Dawood, Senior Vice President, EBU (Emerging Business Units), Economic Zones World and Chief Planning Officer, UAE Region said: “The US Senator’s visit was of great importance to us and gave us the opportunity to showcase the latest multidimensional developments in the Free Zone and port in Djibouti. It also reflected the strong ties between the two economies. We are proud to be supporting and facilitating BMMI and USAID’s operations and plans in Africa.” Olivier Fricot, Country
Through its wholly-owned subsidiary - BMMI Djibouti – the BMMI Group has made a substantial investment to date in the Republic of Djibouti. In January 2005, BMMI opened a state-of-the-art logistics facility in Djibouti Free Zone, comprising a US$ 5 million warehouse covering an area of 17,500 square metres, and providing ambient temperature, chilled and frozen storage areas. The complex is supported by the latest racking, materials handling and inventory control technologies, and operates in line with the highest international standards. Managed by Jafza, the flagship company of EZW, the Djibouti Free Zone is a gateway to East Africa and one of the single most important strategic logistics hubs that allows companies located in DFZ to serve 380 million people in 19 countries in East and Central Africa.
Medical Matters Stroke - Act Fast Although the risk of stroke increases with age, nevertheless one quarter of all strokes happen to people of working age. Furthermore, strokes kill more women than breast cancer, and it is the commonest cause of severe disability. The most important thing to remember about strokes is that they are treatable. Tragic consequences of a stroke can be seen everyday, but people do make remarkable recoveries with the right treatment. This article seeks to explain what a stroke is, how to take precautions with a view to avoiding one, and what the treatments are. A stroke is a type of brain injury. The commonest form of stroke is an ischaemic stroke, which is caused by a blockage of the blood supply to part of the brain, usually triggered by a clot in a blood vessel. However, a stroke can also be caused by bleeding from a vessel, which is known as a haemorrhagic stroke. Common to both types of stroke is that the injury to brain happens suddenly and, without treatment, brain cells die. Just like any other disease, strokes are caused by a complex interaction between nature and nurture. People vary both in their genetic predisposition to strokes, and in their life-time exposure to risk factors. Reducing these risk factors is an important way of mitigating exposure to the risk of strokes. Smoking doubles the risk of strokes, 42 Forum
and smokers who manage to quit the habit almost immediately thereafter start to reduce their exposure to risk. Furthermore, regular exercise, eating your “fivea-day” portions of fresh fruit and vegetables, and moderating alcohol intake are also important. You should also be aware that high blood-pressure is the most important treatable risk factor, and which often causes no symptoms until it is too late - so it is vital to routinely have your blood pressure checked. In certain patients, the symptoms and signs of a stroke are caused by the loss of function of affected brain cells. For example, damage to the primary motor cortex areas responsible for controlling movement of an arm often leads to paralysis of that arm. The muscles may be working fine, but the cells that control them are not. The diagnosis of stroke is based on the patterns of damage that occur, having regard to the way the brain is organised. A lot of brain function is lateralised; that is to say areas that control function on one side of the body are grouped together. In the above example of a patient with a weak arm, the leg on the same side may also be affected similarly. Some of the higher functions of the brain such as speech are carried out by only one side of the brain. The language ability that enables both the understanding and production of speech and the written word is localised to the parietal cortex of the dominant hemisphere which, for example, is the left side in right-handed people. Thus, patients
with weakness of the right arm and leg may also suffer problems with their speech. It is these principles that the recent “FAST” Campaign, aimed at promoting rapid stroke recognition in the general public. If someone suddenly develops weakness of the Face or Arm or a Speech problem, it’s Time to call the emergency services. The most effective treatment for stroke is being admitted to the dedicated Stroke Unit of a Hospital. Whatever the severity of the stroke or age of the patient, just being admitted to an environment where the staff have the competencies to identify, diagnose, and appropriately manage, the condition makes at least a 20% improvement to the outcome and chances of survival. In a Stroke Unit, staff will also pay special attention to maintaining hydration and nutrition, safe swallowing, early mobilisation, therapy, and the prevention of complications. The sooner the patient gets to a Stroke Unit the better - “Time is Brain”.
The initial specific treatments for strokes are based on the type of stroke that is identified, and will involve: relieving the blockage in case of ischaemic strokes, and sometimes surgery in the case of haemorrhagic strokes. With ischaemic strokes, it is often possible to dissolve a clot completely using thrombolytic treatments to restore the blood supply. If this is done soon enough (within a few hours), some patients can make a seemingly miraculous full recovery. However, the downside is that this treatment can cause serious and occasionally fatal bleeding into the brain and, therefore, for this reason, it is only available in highly specialised centres. These acute treatments can be very effective though, nevertheless, many stroke survivors do still become disabled. The commonest problems are difficulties with mobility, speech, memory and swallowing. In the longer term, patients and their carers can also suffer from depression. These are all difficult problems, but
modern rehabilitation often makes a big impact, and nowadays most patients are able to return home and many others are able to return to work. Thus, strokes are common and serious, but increasingly treatable. How to recognise the signs of stroke Only a hospital test can confirm a stroke for sure, but it is important to know the signs. The Face Arm Speech Time (“FAST”) test can help you recognise the signs of stroke or a Transient Ischaemic Attack (“TIA”). FAST was developed by leading stroke physicians and is used globally by emergency services to assist them recognise the signs:
Act FAST:
Face: Has the patient’s face fallen on one side? Can they still smile? Arms: Can the patient raise both arms and keep them in the air? Speech: Is the patient’s speech slurred? Time: Time to call Emergency Services if you see any single one of these signs.
If a person has failed any of these tests, call Emergency Services immediately so that they can be taken into hospital for urgent treatment. Paramedic and ambulance staff are trained to assess patients with suspected stroke conditions and transport them rapidly to a hospital. The sooner that a person is diagnosed, the sooner that they can be treated, and the greater will be their potential chances of survival and recovery. So minutes really do matter. Moreover, the rapid diagnosis of a TIA will permit measures to be implemented to reduce the risk of a second and potentially major stroke.
a stroke is essential in order to identify the factors contributing to it and the damage inflicted by it, and to determine with immediacy the medical treatment to be administered. Additionally, patients with a suspected stroke should have a brain scan as soon as practicable in order to ascertain:
Rapid Diagnosis is Vital

“Bahrain provides one of the most energetic environments to support and encourage innovation - with a talented local workforce, and forward thinking economic development strategies that help support business and broaden regional presence,” said Skype’s CEO Josh Silverman. “In addition, as a Gateway to the Gulf, Bahrain is the ideal location from which to support our global strategy of making Skype available to as many people as possible wherever they happen to be. The Middle East and Africa has a young, tech savvy population and we believe that Bahrain will play a central role in making Skype even more popular in the region”, he added. Bahrain has been 54 Forum
internationally recognised for its long term commitment to ICT both as a sector and an infrastructure to enable further business growth. The World Economic Forum Global Information Technology Report 20092010 ranked Bahrain in the top 30 economies, a climb of eight places putting the Kingdom 29 out of 133 economies worldwide. Bahrain was also ranked first in the Middle East and 13th out of 192 countries worldwide in the 2010 United Nations Global eGovernment Readiness Survey.
“In Bahrain we have long recognised the importance of ICT not just as an important sector in its own right but as an important enabler of continued economic growth, modernisation and competitiveness,” said Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of the EDB. We are delighted that Skype has decided to set up its regional representative office in Bahrain Their decision to move here reflects the positive impact resulting from the economic reforms being driven forward by the EDB in Bahrain. We have invested in our infrastructure and people to maximise our strategic position as the gateway to the Gulf, which together with our strong track record, robust
and effective regulation and low operating costs, offers international businesses an attractive base to do business in and from,” he said. Information and communications technology (ICT) is one of a number of sectors the Kingdom intends to grow as part of its Vision 2030 and National Economic Strategy, designed to drive the private sector as an engine of growth, support further diversification of the economy and ultimately elevate living standards by creating greater opportunities for Bahrainis. These reforms have been led by the EDB under the guidance of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Chairman of the EDB, and have seen significant progress in the ICT sector. This includes the liberalisation of the communications
sector in 2002 followed by the establishment of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) later in 2003 which has created a well-regulated liberal environment for the growing number of ICT companies setting up in Bahrain. The Kingdom is one of the Gulf’s technological pioneers; computing started in Bahrain in the late 1940s, leading to the installation of the first mainframe computer in the region in 1962. In 1969, Bahrain started the first satellite station in the region. It was the first in the region to completely digitize its national and international phone switches (1992); the first in the region to launch Internet services (1995); hold an online referendum (2001); introduce smartcards (2005); fully liberalize its telecommunications market (2004); and to go nationwide with WiMax wireless networks (2007).

IATA’s decision to award BAS this prestigious accreditation came after a comprehensive operational and safety audit carried out by an IATA licensed ISAGO audit team. The audit covered both Management and Operating stations, against 368 and 127 standards respectively to inspect BAS operating manuals, documentation, Organisation and Management Systems and making sure that BAS safety procedures are in conformity with the ISAGO standards. The station audit covered passenger and baggage handling; load control; aircraft handling and loading; aircraft ground movement; cargo and mail, and GSE workshop. "It is a great milestone for us to be one of few companies in the region to qualify for this prestigious accreditation and this further demonstrates our relentless commitment to meeting

Kid’s stuff
And Finally
Those of you that manage to get to the back page may recognize that I always attempt to introduce some interesting reading. Sure I have my electronic gadgets, but there’s still something about a good old-fashioned book that makes me want to pick stuff up and wade through it. Sometimes they’ve been new releases, sometimes they’ve been around for a while and I’m only just aware of their existence. Take a look at the new releases though and there’s stuff out there that I just don’t understand the need for. The celebrity bio’s for example are a group of books I can’t get excited about. If you want them though there’s Danni Minogue– My Story; Ryan Giggs – My Life, My Story; Cheryl Cole – Through my eyes; Robbie (Williams) – The Biography; Rafael Nadal –The Biography; etc.etc.etc. you get my drift… It did start me wondering though why so many stars seem to do it these days and ask myself who it is that might be buying these books? The answer it seems may be kids. Having just spent a long summer in the UK with my family I’ve been reminded that just occasionally the kids can come up with comments and trends that do make you think. Did you know, for example that for several years, pollsters in the US and the UK have been asking kids what they think is the “very best thing in the world” The most popular answer it seems is “being a celebrity”. Children under ten apparently think “being rich” and “looking good” are also in the top three. When asked how much they’d need to be rich the answers came in anywhere between £460 and £200 million. (so not much help there then!) As parents it’s our responsibility to teach, guide and encourage our kids. If we do our job right they go on to become responsible contributing members of society. Andy Warhol once said that everyone will have 15 minutes of fame. This may or may not be true, but to achieve celebrity status and stay there, kids are going to need a few pointers. So what then should we be teaching our kids so that they might achieve a decent life. Here’s a short list to stimulate your thoughts on the issue: Maybe you could teach them …that they can be happy if they choose to be happy …that a smile is the simplest thing you can do to truly brighten the day of someone else 60 Forum
