Newport Gulls Summer Camps

Every summer, Newport Gulls Baseball conducts several Youth Summer Camps at locations around Aquidneck Island. These camps are designed for youth baseball players between the ages of 6 and 12. Our summer camps have become very popular, averaging almost 100 participants per session. Many of our campers come from out-of-state for the opportunity to attend a Gulls camp. The camps are run by the Newport Gulls coaching staff and players and are designed to teach the fundamentals of baseball, specific to the age group and/or skill level involved. After hours of skill-specific drills and instruction, camp participants take part in contests and live game play to show off their skills, with the chance to win awards for different competitions. Our 4th Annual Mark Weed Memorial Camp will be held at Newport’s Wellington Field in Mark’s honor from July 8th to July 11th. The camp was named in honor of Mark, who was an avid supporter of youth athletics on Aquidneck Island. At his request, a foundation was set up to send children from the island to our summer camps free of charge. All participants of the Mark Weed Memorial Camp will attend the Gulls game scheduled in his honor on July 29th, 2013 for a pre-game ceremony in his memory. The cost of camp is $85, which includes instruction, a Gulls T-Shirt and Gulls game ticket. Camps take place four days per week, Monday through Thursday from 9 A.M. until 12 P.M. A small price to pay to learn the game from the “Major League Stars of Tomorrow.” Registration forms can be found on our website www.newportgulls.com. 2013 SUMMER CAMP SCHEDULE # DAYS DATES LOCATION 1 Mo - Thurs 6/24 - 6/27 Portsmouth LL 2 Mo - Fri (No Thu) 7/1 - 7/5 Middletown LL 3 Mo - Thurs 7/8 - 7/11 Newport LL (5th Ward) 4 Mo - Thurs 7/15 - 7/18 Portsmouth LL 5 Mo - Thurs 7/22 - 7/25 Middletown LL For a brochure or more information, call Ron Westmoreland at (401) 849-4982 or email ron@newportgulls.com. The Newport Gulls have goals that go beyond the field itself. Our mission is to provide a level of community involvement and family entertainment to children and adults alike, that is second to none in New England. It is because of our players, coaches and fans that we have been able to do just that. Being a non-profit organization, none of this is possible without the many volunteers, staff, host families and businesses in our communities that support us. June, 2013 Newport Gulls Fans, Our 2012 season was remarkable, winning our 5th Fay Vincent Cup in our first 12 years of operation. The team was focused from the first day of the season until the last day; establishing a new NECBL record for wins in a season and broke many of the league’s offensive records. Our pitching staff came on strong to support the offense and the combination of pitching, defense and offense made the 2012 Gulls a team for the memories. The icing on the cake was ending the season being named the #1 ranked summer college baseball team in the country by PG Crosshecker. Another remarkable event occurred when the Gulls celebrated St. Baldrick’s Fight Against Kids Cancer Night. In front of a packed house, the entire team and coaching staff, volunteers and fans shaved their heads in unity to fight kids cancer. This effort was the brainchild of Mike Melillo, 2008 & 2009 Newport Gull with support of many others, the event raised $17,000.00. Outstanding night! Now we our focused on our 2013 team and season with much excitement. Our 2013 team is again loaded with talent and will be fun to watch as they set their sights on their own legacy. I am confident this group of players will represent the Gulls well both on and off the field. There is also a lot of excitement about the three new franchises in the NECBL. On behalf of our Newport Gulls “family”, we would like to welcome the new member clubs: Plymouth Pilgrims (Ma), Ocean State Waves (RI) and Saratoga Brigade (NY). All the best in your inaugural seasons. As always, we are so grateful for the support we get from this community. It truly amazes me when I think of the positive influence the Gulls have on so many lives on Aquidneck Island and beyond. However, the biggest thanks go to our host families, sponsors, volunteers and fans; you are all the real reason we are the #1 team in the country. Thank you for your support. Sincerely,

Chuck Paiva President & General Manager Newport Gulls

Cardines Field: a piece of baseball history since 1908 Cardines Field, the home of the Newpor t Gulls has a r ich histor y involving the great American pastime. The parcel of land on which Cardines sits, formerly known as “The Basin”, had been used in the 1800’s as a source of water for the steam locomotives until the area residents complained about the stagnant water. In 1908, a small group of New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad employees cleared enough away for a diamond to play host to a six-team league. In 1919, the railroad granted permission to the oldest established amateur league in the United States, known as the George S. Donnelly Sunset League which still plays today - 93 seasons later. Between 1925 and 1936, the City of Newport leased the field for $1 per year. Small wooden bleachers and a backstop were added since no permanent improvements could be made to the privately owned parcel of land. In 1936, the City of Newport purchased the field and quickly made it one of the finest fields in America. Cardines is a cousin of other notable fields of that era, Ebbetts, Fenway and Wrigley all boasted a stone facade and wooden bleachers with unique outfield angles that made players famous in their ability to play the caroms. By the 1980’s, Cardines Field was in danger of being torn down to make room for a parking lot to support the successful tourist industry in Newport. A local group led by Ron MacDonald, raised the funds necessary to repair the aging facility and made significant improvements to the field. Due to the efforts of Mr. MacDonald, the City of Newport passed a resolution that will keep Cardines Field as an historic landmark in Newport history. Today, the “Friends of Cardines Foundation” with support from the Aletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust and the City of Newport work hard each year to improve the historic landmark, which, in 2001 saw the addition of a new lighting system. The Newport Gulls contributed with a modern new concession stand and in the past two years the parks and recreation department completed the renovation of the bathroom, bleachers and locker room facilities. Over the years many baseball legends have graced Cardines Field, including Jimmy Foxx,

6

Larry Doby, Lou Gorman and Satchel Paige who sat in a rocking chair between the hockey style dugouts thinking up new names for his many pitches. Folklore has it that Babe Ruth once toed the batters box and rubber here at Cardines.... One thing is for sure though, the Newport Gulls have revived the treasure, leading the NECBL in attendance for the third straight year averaging an unprecedented 50,000 fans per season and contributing to Cardines being named among the top five places to play in Summer College Baseball by Baseball America magazine. Since 2001 the Gulls relocated from Cranston, RI to Cardines Field in Newport, and has become the home of the Newport Gulls and the premier host city in all of summer college baseball. 13 Years of Gulls success, the baseball tradition grows at historic Cardines Field...  Distances to Fences: Leftfield: 315ft Left Centerfield: 365ft Centerfield: 395ft Right Centerfield: 315ft Right field: 285ft (Fences -28 Feet High) Seating Capacity: 3,000

2012 NECBL CHAMPIONS

The Newport Gulls went 31-10 overall during the regular season and then went 6-1 during the playoffs, sweeping the Danbury Westerners to become the 2012 champions of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Newport has now won a league-record five NECBL Championships (2001, 2002, 2005, 2009 and 2012). The Gulls finished the season with a 37-11 overall record, including a 22-2 record at Cardines Field. The Gulls, led by a season-high 13 strikeouts from Bryant University junior starting pitcher Pete Kelich, defeated the Danbury Westerners 8-1 in Game Two of the NECBL Championship Series to complete the series sweep and capture the Fay Vincent Sr. Cup for the first time since 2009 and the fifth time in franchise history.

10

In addition to capturing the NECBL title, the Gulls finished 2012 as the No. 1 ranked team in the country according to Perfect Game USA’s Final Rankings of the Top 50 Teams in Summer Collegiate Baseball. The Gulls finished the season as the top-ranked summer collegiate baseball program in the country for the first time, surpassing every other summer collegiate team in the nation - including the teams of the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League. Offensively in 2012, the Gulls set nine team records, led by a historic season from offensive catalyst, Jeff Melillo, a junior catcher from Rutgers University. Melillo, the “heart and soul” of the Gulls both offensively and defensively behind the plate, set a league record for on-base percentage (.548) while winning the NECBL batting title, hitting .404 (38-for94) with 34 runs scored, 12 doubles, five home runs, 30 RBI, 26 walks and one stolen base in 27 games during the regular season. The Gulls pitching staff, led by both Kelich and Arkansas State junior Daniel Wright, who went 8-0 with a 3.30 ERA in nine starts, posted the best team ERA in the NECBL last season (3.96 ERA).

11

Newport Gulls Coaching Staff #11 Mike Coombs (Manager) Mike Coombs is in his ninth season at the helm of the Newport Gulls, since taking over as field manager during the 2005 season. Coombs owns a career regular-season record of 226-107 and has guided the Gulls to three NECBL titles (2005, 2009 and 2012) during his tenure. Under Coombs, the Newport Gulls have become the winningest franchise in league history, and in 2012 were ranked the No. 1 team nationally to finish the summer collegiate season by Perfect Game USA. Coombs also owns a 31-10 all-time postseason record. “It’s always a pleasure to come back and be the manager of the Newport Gulls,” Coombs said. “It’s a privilege. I never take it for granted.” In 2012, Coombs led the Gulls to the best record in the NECBL at 31-10 during the regular season. Going 6-1 in the postseason, the Gulls defeated the Danbury Westerners, two games to none, for Newport’s league-record fifth Fay Vincent, Sr. Cup. Coombs was also the manager for the Eastern Division All-Star Team. In 2011, Coombs led the Gulls to 29-13 record, the best in the NECBL, during the regular season and another Eastern Division regular season title before the Gulls were defeated by the Laconia Muskrats in the first round of the NECBL playoffs. In 2010, Coombs guided the Gulls to a 27-15 record and another division crown during the regular season. The Gulls swept the Muskrats in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the eventual NECBL Champion North Shore Navigators in the Eastern Division Championship Series. In 2009, the Gulls won their fourth NECBL title, defeating the Vermont Mountaineers in three games. For his exceptional summer, Coombs was named the Manager of Team NECBL for the league’s exhibition contest versus Team USA. Coombs was also named the Manager of the Eastern Division All-Star team and was named the 2009 NECBL Coach of the Year. In 2008, Coombs was named the manager of the Southern Division All-Star Team for the second time in four seasons, as the Gulls finished 26-16 during the regular season before losing to the Sanford Mainers in the NECBL Championship Series. In 2007, Coombs led the Gulls to the 25-win plateau during the regular season once again (25-17), but Newport fell to the Vermont Mountaineers in the NECBL Championship Series.

12

In 2006, Coombs steered the Gulls to a team-high 32-10 overall record during the regular season and was named the 2006 NECBL Coach of the Year. Coombs also managed the 2006 Southern Division All-Star Team. In 2005, Coombs led the Gulls to a 26-16 record during the regular season and then on to the team’s third NECBL Championship during his first season at the helm. Coombs was an assistant coach for the season’s first three games before taking over for the remainder of the season as manager. The ever-colorful Coach Coombs has an extensive background in baseball, playing as a catcher and outfielder for Seminole Community College, in the Shenandoah Valley Collegiate League and professionally for the Detroit Tigers organization. He has coached at the high school, collegiate and professional levels, including as a pitching coach with the University of South Florida and the Milwaukee Brewers organization. “The way people treat me in Newport is wonderful,” said Coombs. “I couldn’t ask for a better second home than Newport. I love coming back for that reason. The baseball is great, the players and coaches are great. Being a part of the Newport Gulls family is something special.” During his first two seasons in Newport, Coombs wore uniform number 25. He has since worn number 11. #24 Al Leyva (Hitting Coach) Assistant Coach Al Leyva returns for his third season with the Newport Gulls as the team’s hitting coach and third base coach. Leyva has seven years of experience in the NECBL as a manager and assistant coach with three different organizations. Currently, Leyva is in his fifth season as the head coach at Damien High School in California. Under Leyva’s guidance, the Gulls led the NECBL in runs scored, doubles, on base percentage (.422) and ranked second in batting average (.313) and slugging percentage (.503) in 2012. After coaching stints at the high school and college level, Leyva began his NECBL coaching career as the field manager of the Middletown Giants in 2003, leading them to the playoffs in his first season at the helm. In 2004 and 2005, Leyva served as an assistant coach with the Manchester Silkworms, making playoff appearances in both seasons. In 2006, Leyva made his professional coaching debut with the Chicago White Sox rookie ball team in Bristol, Tennessee. Leyva served as an assistant coach to his brother Nick Leyva, who is currently a third base coach with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

13

Newport Gulls Coaching Staff (Continued) #3 Kevin Long (Pitching Coach) Kevin Long returns for his third stint as the pitching coach of the Newport Gulls this season. In 2011, Long played an integral role in the Gulls success on the mound, as they led the NECBL in team ERA (2.59). The Gulls pitching staff, under Long, again led the NECBL in team ERA in 2012, despite it being the most productive offensive year in NECBL history. Prior to joining the Gulls, Long served as the pitching coach of the Wareham Gatemen of the Cape Cod Baseball League in 2009. In 2005 and 2006, Long made his NECBL debut as an assistant coach with the Danbury Westerners. Long pursued his passion for coaching college baseball while still working as a detective for the Miami Police Department. Upon his retirement in 2003, Long accepted a position as a pitching coach on the Miami Dade College staff. Many of his pitchers over the last decade have gone on to sign professional contracts.

The Newport Gulls have won 5 NECBL Championships and 8 Division Championships #33 Frank Holbrook (Bench Coach) Assistant Coach Frank Holbrook is joining the Gulls coaching staff for the first time, after having played for the team throughout Newport’s 2012 championship season. The Gulls Opening Day starter, Holbrook, a 6’2” 210 lbs. righty, went 3-0 in 10 appearances, both as a starter and out of the bullpen, during the regular season. A Middletown, R.I. native, Holbrook grew up watching the Newport Gulls and playing at Cardines Field. His family was also a Gulls host family, years before they had the opportunity to “host” their own son for the 2012 season. Graduating from the Portsmouth Abbey School, Holbrook is coming back to the Gulls this summer following his senior year at Wheaton College. Holbrook’s duties are expected to include time as Newport Gulls bench coach and first base coach. 14

Newport Gulls Championship History The Newport Gulls have won: 5 NECBL Championships, (2001, 2002, 2005, 2009, 2012), 8 Division Championships (2001, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012) 8 Regular Season Division Championships (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012). The Gulls were members of the American Division in 2001, the Southern Division in 2002 and 2004-2008, and the Eastern Division in 2003 and 2009-Present.

Seven Memorable Moments in Newport (1) Before moving to Newport in 2001, the Rhode Island Gulls, as they were called for the 1999 and 2000 seasons, played at Cranston Stadium in Cranston, R.I. The 2000 club lost to the Keene Swampbats in the NECBL Championship Series, but the Newport Gulls would get revenge by defeating Keene in the finals in 2001 and 2002. (2) The Gulls have one former player in the NECBL Hall of Fame: 2003 catcher Chris Iannetta, who played for the Colorado Rockies from 20062011 and now plays for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The NECBL will induct its second class on Nov. 3, 2012. (3) The Gulls, Cardines Field and the City of Newport have hosted the NECBL All-Star Game twice: in 2005, and again in 2010. (4) On July 1, 2005, four Gulls pitchers combined for a near-perfect nohitter at Rogers Park in Danbury, Conn., in a 5-0 win. SP Jeremy Hall walked Danbury’s Matt Teale to start the game and allowed him to reach second on a throwing error, but combined with Danny Otero, who pitched five innings, Josh Lairsey and Travis Webb, who each pitched one, to retire the next 27 Westerners in order. (5) Gulls 2B Jeff Miller turned an unassisted triple play - a feat rarer than a perfect game - at Cardines Field in the first inning of Game One of the 2005 NECBL Championship Series versus the Vermont Mountaineers on August 8, 2005. (6) On July 21, 2006, the Gulls defeated the North Adams SteepleCats, 5-0, at Cardines Field. SP Brandon McKerney kept them hitless through 5 and 2/3 innings before a blister on his finger ended his outing. Paul Nardozzi pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball before Mike Lynn closed out the ninth. The three pitchers combined for a no-hitter. (7) Gulls SP Chase Reid struck out an NECBL-record 19 Torrington Twisters at Cardines Field on July 4, 2008. The Gulls won, 6-1, as Reid scattered five hits and walked none.

Unique Features of Cardines Field Hockey-Style Dugouts: Due to the lack of foul territory on the third base line, both dugouts are located on the first base line, side-by-side. Small Dugout Dimensions: Each dug out was designed for the small, barnstorming teams of an earlier era, with less than a dozen players able to sit inside. Shared Bullpen: Like the dugouts, each team shares the bullpen, located in dead ball territory past the left field concession concourse. A ball bouncing into the bullpen is a ground-rule double. The Gulls Nest: A boxed-in seating and barbeque area located above the concession stand on the right field line. The Warehouse: A large, stone structure makes up the majority of what would be foul territory and the bullpen in right field. Halfway down the right field line, the warehouse itself is the foul line, with any batted ball striking it being called foul. The Fences: While Cardines may have a short porch in left and right field, the fences were once 20 feet high. In 2006, they were raised to 28 feet, with the exception of a 15 foot section in left center field that remains the old height, cut out for a tree branch to grow. The Trees: Cardines Field is in the heart of a crowded neighborhood in Downtown Newport, and with homes just yards from the outfield fences (making broken windows common), trees grow over the height of the fence in left field. Any ball hitting a tree branch overhanging the fence but bouncing back into the field of play is an automatic home run. The Ticket Booths: While the main Ticket Booth is located behind the press box, Cardines Field has a half dozen “hidden” ticket booths at gates throughout the ballpark. These unused booths have been covered up for decades, only visible from rooms in Cardines not normally accessible to the public. The Triangle: Located at the deepest part of the ballpark, the Triangle, at 395 feet, forms an angle in straight away center where the fence opens to allow heavy equipment to access the field. The Right Center Corner: Due to the property lines in the outfield and nearby homes, the fence in right centerfield juts in more than 40 feet, forming a sharp, right-angle corner. At the front end of the corner is a light tower in fair territory play at Cardines, making it one of the trickiest right fields to play in baseball. Doubles Delight: The Newport Gulls frequently lead the NECBL in doubles, in part due to the dimensions and angles of Cardines Field’s outfield fences. Triple Rarity: Despite leading the league in doubles, the Gulls typically have among the fewest triples due to short dimensions of Cardines. The most common triples land in the triangle, or in the right field corner when balls bounce away from fielders. Sea Breeze Boost: Located only a block away from the Atlantic Ocean, the sea breeze frequently has an impact on play, most commonly producing south west winds that blow the ball out towards right. Extra Outs: Foul outs are rare at Cardines, with only a few feet of foul territory down the right field line and even less on the left field line (the grandstand makes up the back of the third base coach’s box). Not So Wild: Inexperienced runners often get caught at the plate trying to score from third on a wild pitch or passed ball. The limited foul territory means balls often bounce right back to alert catchers, getting pitchers out of jams in a rather unique fashion. Close Calls: With so little foul territory, most seats at Cardines Field are protected by a series of wire fences, nets and poles that ring the ballpark’s grandstands. With major roads lying only a few feet behind the grandstand, it is a standing safety rule that any fan chasing a foul ball into the street or intersection behind Cardines will not be readmitted to the ballpark. No Press Box: The press facilities at Cardines are literally built into the grandstand behind home plate, creating odd viewing angles.Visiting media should be advised that fans sit directly in front of, next to, and behind reserved press seats. Table space is limited. Fog Delays: Typically occurring once or twice per season, mid-summer fog, rolling off of the water only a block away, can make the already treacherous outfield at Cardines unplayable and unsafe. In the event of a fog delay, the umpiring crew will typically wait as long as possible for conditions to improve before calling or suspending the game. The Flag and Scoreboard: Foul territory in front of the warehouse on the first base line includes the scoreboard support beams, which are in the field of play, and the flagpole , which was originally located in play in the Triangle in center field but was moved to its present location in 2006. Mudville Seats: Located next door to Cardines is the Mudville Pub, which features a seating area where dozens of fans can watch the game from foul territory, protected by a fence. The private apartments above Mudville include a third floor deck, where fans also congregate.
