ABOUT ME The concept of “Do-It-Yourself” was imprinted into my consciousness long before it became a trendy acronym or the name of cable network. For me, it was a way of life. I come from a family tradi on of makers, doers and xers. Work as a problem-solving exercise is an integral part of my heritage and was a signi cant feature of my forma ve years. Whether it was diagnosing and repairing vehicles, building our family home, or simply laboring from dawn to dusk, work was a common aspect of my family’s life. As a young child, I learned the importance of hard work, the camaraderie of coopera on with my fellow laborers, and the sa sfac on of a job well done. The combina on of crea ve zeal and tenacious work ethic are what de ne me as a professional and as a person. I have discovered my abili es and talents exist at the intersec on of inspira on and focused labor. When faced with obstacles, I focus my energy into overcoming the challenge knowing that with enough crea ve e ort, I will nd a solu on. In the teamwork-driven prac ce of architecture, this can-do a tude enables me to be a strong contributor in a collabora ve studio environment. These ingrained traits have also permeated my view of design and architecture. Just as the word “work” can be de ned as both a process and a product, I believe that architecture can be de ned in the same way. It can be described as crea ve, collabora ve, and hands-on process as well as an end result. Based on this de ni on, “Work” is the word is the most appropriate descrip on for my por olio of projects. I seek to design crea vely and though ully yet with commitment, dedica on, and passion. To me, “work” is synonymous with “cra ”. It is my desire that the e ort I devote to design would be re ected in my cra in a way that creates a meaningful connec on between the maker, the work, and the public.

NORDSTROM
THE DOMAIN, AUSTIN, TEXAS Location Client Project type Cost Stats
The Domain, Aus n, Texas Nordstrom Retail - New Construc on $35M 130,000 SF
Timeline
Design began in the summer of 2014. Permit drawings were be completed in February of 2015. The store opened to the public in the Fall of 2016.
About
Nordstrom recently launched a signi cant refresh of their full-line stores featuring a modern, bou que aesthe c. The design goal of the new Aus n store was to create a building that maintains the sleek, upscale look and feel of the refreshed Nordstrom brand, while ng in with the hip, rus c vibe of The Domain development. The building is clad in high-quality precast concrete with mul ple surface treatments. The facades feature large expanses of ceramic-fri ed glass that are protected by deep overhangs and a shading screen to keep the building cool during the hot Texas summers. A zinc-clad portal encloses the primary entrance and adjacent co ee bar while suppor ng an outdoor dining terrace above.
My Role
During my me in the Nordstrom studio, the studio was segregated into separate teams. Each team was responsible for a discrete part of the store and a por on of the design process. As a member of the exterior design team, I helped cra the overall look and feel of each store. For the Domain store, I was the lead designer from the early conceptual massing studies through the nal design development package that was handed o to the technical team to complete construc on documents. As design lead for a new, stand-alone store, my job was to blend the Nordstrom aesthe c with the design of local context. Most of my work on the project involved massing, facade studies, material research, landscape coordina on, client presenta ons, and coordina ng design details with the technical team. Addi onally, I was tasked with leading the transi on of the Nordstrom design and documenta on work ow from 2D CAD to BIM. This involved building BIM families, templates, and work ows from the ground up. As a result of my e orts, the Domain store was the rst full-line Nordstrom to be designed and documented in Revit and led the way for future Nordstrom BIM projects.

OUTDOOR AREAS
One of the unique features of The Domain development, and Austin in general, is outdoor-oriented, music-focused, public spaces. Since the Nordstrom store would occupy a key site within the development, one of the goals of the design e ort was to create att acti e outdoor areas that would fit within the overall look and feel of the development. This was accomplished by providing extensive seating as well as a performance area just outside of the store’s co ee shop. A second-floor restaurant dining terrace overlooks the activity below and provides a second, more private outdoor space. The centerpiece of the groundlevel outdoor space is an internallyilluminated community table cra ed from perforated zinc panels and charred wood and integrated into the architecture of the building.

CVS PHARMACY WEST SEATTLE Location Client Project type Cost
West Sea le, Sea le, Washington Velmeir Companies Retail Unknown
About
As part of their entry into the Sea le market, CVS Pharmacy and their developer, Velmeir, engaged my rm to perform the ini al design of retail pharmacy buildings on three di erent sites around Sea le and to assist with naviga ng the land use en tlement process. Once this process was complete, the designs were to be handed o to the CVS corporate architect for comple on. Of the three sites, the West Sea le site was the most diďŹƒcult to develop due to the diďŹƒcultly of complying with zoning and design review requirements while sa sfying the corporate requirements of CVS. Ul mately, the project was deemed infeasible by the client and was cancelled prior to the nal design review mee ng.
Challenges
CVS pharmacies are typically single-story, stand-alone retail boxes with on-site surface parking and a drive-through. This building type is compa ble with the low-density suburban zoning of their usual markets. However, this par cular store was proposed on a site zoned for mul story, mixed use construc on. In spite the zoning, the proposed site plan would be similar to a typical CVS, because neither the developer nor CVS wished to propose a mixed-use building. Our challenge was to develop the site to achieve the programma c goals of CVS while mee ng the urban design requirements of the underlying zoning. In short, we were tasked with urbanizing a suburban site plan.
My Role
This my was rst introduc on to the Sea le land use en tlement process and design review. I joined the project prior to the rst Early Design Guidance mee ng and assisted in preparing the packet and presenta ons. Unfortunately we were required to revise the design and return for a second mee ng. For the revised design, I was responsible for site planning and oversaw the work of another sta member who was developing the building facades. During prepara on for the Master Use Permit, the other two members of my team le and I completed the permit applica on myself. A er the Master Use Permit package was submi ed, I worked closely with my assigned planner at the City of Sea le to develop the rst dra of the Design Review package. It was at this stage that the project was canceled.

NORTHWEST ROOMS BREEZEWAY SEATTLE CENTER Location Client Project type Cost
Sea le Center, Sea le, Washington Sea le Center Civic $500,000
About
The Sea le Center is an arts, educa onal, tourism and entertainment center and the home of the iconic Space Needle. As the site of the 1962 Century 21 exposi on, the Sea le Center saw the construc on of several new buildings, many of which were designed by Paul Thiry, the supervising architect of the exposi on. One such building, originally known as the Commerce and Industry building, was conceived as a openair pavilion to house a variety of exhibits from countries around the globe. A er the fair, the pavilion was enclosed and converted to mee ng rooms. The building remained largely intact un l a renova on in the early 1990s removed a por on of the mee ng rooms and created a large breezeway. Over the last several years, por ons of the building have been renovated culmina ng in the arrival of the KEXP studios in 2016. Throughout this period, the breezeway had remained untouched. in 2013, due to it’s age and signi cance as related to the Exposi on, the building gained as landmark status, which included a number of protec ons.
Project Goal
The primary intent of the renova on was to de-clu er the space by removing nonlandmarked features and enhancing the original structure with new ligh ng and nishes. The goal was to revitalize the breezeway as a welcoming entrance to the Sea le Center campus with the introduc on of light, air and landscaping.
Challenges
Due to the building’s landmark status, the breezeway renova on required the approval of Sea le’s Landmarks Preserva on Board. This involved an applica on, drawings, and a series of public hearings to gain approval. Another challenge was to create a space that was a rac ve yet durable enough to withstand public use, weather, and birds while requiring minimal maintenance. In addi on to challenges related the new renova on work, there were many issues caused by previous renova ons that needed correc on, such as water leakage into occupied spaces below the breezeway. Budget constraints were also challenging, with most of the funding for the project coming from a small projects capital budget.
My Role
Due to the small scope of the project, I performed all roles on the project, with occasional assistance from the project principal and other design sta . I conducted a design charre e with key client stakeholders and developed the outcome into a schema c design. I shepherded the design through the Landmarks process from applica on through public board presenta ons. I coordinated with a small consultant team and developed all of the details for the project. I completed the permi ng process and prepared bidding drawings and speci ca ons.

CONCEPTUAL SKETCH
One of the key features of the 1990s breezeway renovation was a series of translucent skylights. Over the years, these skylights had deteriorated to the point at which they no longer provided much daylight. To achieve the goal of brightening the space, these skylights were reconfigu ed and reimagined as portals to the sky. While some skylights were intended to be replaced with clear glass, when possible, the skylights were removed completely to allow for the installation of planters and the introduction of lands aping within the breezeway.

THE PARK HOUSE
CAPITOL HILL TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT Location Client Project type Cost Stats Timeline About
123 10th Ave, Capitol Hill, Sea le, Washington Gerding Edlen Development Mul -family / Mixed-Use $35M 111,000 SF | 7 oors (5 oors of Type IIIA wood construc on over 2 oors of Type IA concrete construc on) plus one level of underground parking | 74 residen al units | 3000 SF of retail space | 25 parking stalls Construc on is expected to be complete in 2020. The Capitol Hill transit-oriented development site is located above a below-grade light rail sta on in the heart of the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The sta on opened in 2016 and is a key node in a rapidly-expanding light rail system. These development sites were ini ally obtained to facilitate the construc on of the sta on. However, upon the comple on of the project, they were no longer needed by the transit agency, Sound Transit, and have been made available for development. These sites represent a once-in-a-life me opportunity to create a vibrant, mixed-use development in close proximity to high-capacity transit. The development consists of four building sites arranged around a public plaza: Site A, B-North, B-South, and C. Three sites will be developed as mixed-use, market-rate buildings. The fourth site, B-North will be developed by a non-pro t housing provider as a ordable housing. Schemata Workshop partnered with Hewi Architects to design buildings for sites B-South and B-North and sites A and C, respec vely. The building occupying the B-South site is marketed as a luxury apartment building, known as The Park House, due to its proximity to Cal Anderson Park. At the ground level, a retail/ restaurant space engages the central plaza, while a series of lo units provides a residen al quality along 10th Ave. The main lobby is situated adjacent to a public pedestrian passage, which divides the ground oor and provides direct access to the plaza. On the 2nd oor, an expansive lounge with a wraparound terrace provides views to the park and plaza. Many of the units are large, two and three bedroom units that feature high ceilings, generous balconies, and high-quality nishes and appliances.
My Role
During conceptual design, I par cipated in the ini al masterplan-level design conversa on and took the lead in developing site-wide design principles. For The Park House, I was the lead designer and was primarily responsible for massing, facade design, and ground oor planning. As the project architect, I resolved technical challenges, coordinated building systems with a large team of consultants, and managed drawing produc on while overseeing a small sta of design professionals. As a team, we produced mul ple design and drawing packages from Early Design Guidance packets to permi ng and bidding documents. In addi on to my other project roles, I served as the BIM lead for both The Park House and the a ordable building on site B-North. I implemented new techniques, protocols, and work ows to streamline modeling and drawing produc on while coordina ng with our partner rm and our consultant team. Addi onally, I supported the project manager in work planning, client interac on, and en tlement.

In an cipa on of the redevelopment of the surplus sites and through the advocacy of the Capitol Hill community, the City of Sea le and Sound Transit partnered with the community to develop an Urban Design Framework, which was completed in 2010. In 2013, a Development Agreement was approved which incorporated much of the Urban Design Framework recommenda ons for the sites. In addi on to the requirements of the land use code and the neighborhood design guidelines, the Development Agreement imposes speci c uses, setbacks, height limits, open spaces, access points, & a ordability requirements.

BIBLE BAPTIST CHURCH EVERETT, WASHINGTON Location Client Project type Cost
Evere , Washington Bible Bap st Church Religious & Community Approximately $5M
About
Bible Bap st Church is a 500-member congrega on located in a mixed-income, culturally-diverse suburban neighborhood. In it’s 50 years of existence, the church has developed a strong desire to be an ac ve member of the community and to serve the residents of south Evere with various outreach programs. Addi onally, the church has launched numerous ministries within the membership over last few years. However, the campus has not kept up with the change and growth of these programs and ministries. Star ng with the original 1968 building, facili es have been constructed and renovated on the campus as needed to accommodate the congrega on growth and outreach opportuni es. As a result, the current campus is a mismatch of unconnected structures, many of which are outdated. Rather than con nue to construct and renovate buildings in a costly, ad hoc manner, the church made the decision to embark on an extensive master planning process to iden fy current needs and future opportuni es and to though ully and eďŹƒciently shape the campus to accommodate them. From January of 2015, through November of 2017 the church went through a two-part process of programming and planning. The result was a robust, long-range campus master plan that is easily broken down into achievable short term goals that will enable the church to e ec vely accomplish its mission. The nal master plan was presented to the congrega on in November of 2017 and the rst phase is expected to start in mid-2018.
My Role
Throughout my career I’ve worked with a number of religious organiza ons develop long-range facility plans. Because of this depth of experience working with these organiza ons, Bible Bap st Church asked me to lead them through the master planning process. At the outset of the project, I introduced the idea and process to the congrega on and solicited their ideas. During programming, I gathered and analyzed facility data, a endance gures, and congrega on feedback. I worked closely with ministry leaders to iden fy needs, challenges, and dreams. To complete the programming phase, I compiled a comprehensive programming document that documented and illustrated the needs, goals, and priori es of the church. I kicked o the planning phase with charre e and invited all church members to par cipate. I developed many of the ideas from the charre e into conceptual op ons which were considered and evaluated by a master planning team made up of a diverse crosssec on of church leaders. Once a preferred op on was chosen, I developed this op on into a prelimiary master plan. Along the way, I performed code studies, coordinated structural evalua ons, and obtained a cost es mate. When the preferred concept was deemed to be to be too expensive, I regrouped with the team and developed an lower-cost alterna ve to the master plan that s ll achieved the lo y goals of the ini al concept.

As part of my ini al inves ga on, I gathered data from three separate sources: 1) as-built drawings from measurements and photographs 2) ve years of a endance records for each ministry area 3) A series of surveys I distributed to ministry leaders and par cipants throughout the congrega on. I analyzed this data to iden fy trends within the church and to * Based on hand-recorded attendance data from 1/1/15 through 8/1/15

iden fy which ministry areas have and will have the greatest facility needs. I was able to use the survey answers to iden fy several overall guiding principles and project priori es. All of this data was compiled into a programming report and provided to the master planning team to use as a guide to inform the next steps of planning process.

MADE WORK
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON About
Much of my family history and forma ve in uences revolved around the physical construc on of objects and structures. The applica on of cra and skill is ingrained into who I am as an architect and manifests itself in the objects I construct. In the past, my focus has been on interior objects and furnishings. Many of those projects had been created in response to a par cular need or desire within my home. Recently, I have begun to explore other project types in addi on to my dwelling-oriented projects. These have ranged from transporta on, to games & toys.
