SummerScape, a low-density, 70-unit luxury condominium which began in 2011, was completed in October 2015 and is ready to move into. It is the first in JB development with units from 2,713 sq ft and is intended for a privileged few. JOHOR, MY SECOND HOME SINCE IT WAS FORMED IN 2006, ISKANDAR MALAYSIA HAS ESTABLISHED ITSELF AS A DYNAMIC INVESTMENT AND RETIREMENT DESTINATION. WHAT IS IT ABOUT THE REGION THAT MAKES PEOPLE WANT TO RELOCATE THERE?
I
n the past few years, Iskandar Malaysia has seen a tremendous transformation – and going by its growing ecosystem of education, healthcare and recreational services, the region looks poised for greater heights as it continues to attract local and international stakeholders. In fact, many early adopters have already comfortably settled down in the rising metropolis. Here are some of the reasons why they made the big move. “It’s the space and the tranquillity that differentiate our experience here from living in Singapore. Here is where you can just leave work behind, come back to a place that is different and which allows you the wide expanse of space to breathe and to relax your mind, instead of feeling stressed

by the rat race and the crowd. Without a doubt, the space and peace we have found living here is something my family and I really treasure.” Derrick Chan, a Singaporean living in Nusajaya (Source: Supermag)
“[My family and I] once travelled to Kota Kinabalu and Langkawi Island where we met a lot of friendly locals, and we liked the environment and climate there as well. The multi-racial and integrated society in Malaysia will also provide a conducive education environment for our children. The Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme and incentives further strengthened my immigration decision. I had considered Penang and Kuala Lumpur as our destination of choice, but the development of Iskandar caught our attention. It reminded me of the peak period of Japan’s economic growth and I hope we could also witness the development in this beautiful city as well.” Noguchi Kenji, a Japanese living in Taman Mount Austin (Source: Supermag) “We enjoy a better lifestyle living in Malaysia. I believe that my children will have a happier childhood growing up here as they are exposed to a more natural living habitat as well as space to run around and explore.” Alvin Wong, a Malaysian who commutes to work in Singapore, living in Taman Pelangi.
13 HOURS IN JOHOR BAHRU CITY CENTRE STEEPED IN RICH HISTORY AND CULTURE, THE BUSTLING CITY CENTRE HAS GOT PLENTY TO OFFER. TRYING TO CRAM EVERY FASCINATING MUST-SEE SPOT INTO ONE DAY IS QUITE A STRETCH, SO HERE’S THE BEST OF THE BEST FOR THE TIME-STRAPPED VISITOR BUKIT CHAGAR ROTI CANAI A hop and a skip away from the old Customs complex, Bukit Chagar Roti Canai is considered the breakfast of champions for many people. The family business has been hand-making and twirling the dough for nearly 30 years. As delicious on its own as when eaten with the homemade vegetarian dhal and sambal chilli, the roti canai is crispy on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside. — Johor Bahru is a smooth 15 minutes’ drive from Singapore, across the causeway; alternatively, visitors may travel there by KTM train 9:00 AM
ANGRY BIRDS ACTIVITY PARK AT KOMTAR JBCC Check out South-East Asia’s first-ever Angry Birds Activity Park, located at the relatively new shopping mall Komtar JBCC. It offers fun activities for young and old guests, including the thrilling Space Drop Airbag, where you free-fall onto a gigantic airbag! 10:30 AM
JOHOR BAHRU HERITAGE WALK Take a walk on Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and the neighbouring streets for a taste of Johor Bahru’s rich history. Dotted with more than 246 shophouses — most of which were built in the 1920s — the streets are usually quiet in the day, save for a handful of thriving food shops and cafés. One is Hiap Joo Bakery & Biscuit Factory, which attracts locals and tourists with its famous wood-fired, oven-baked banana cakes and coconut buns. Another favourite is Restoran Hua Mui, JB’s oldest kopitiam, whose signature Hainanese chicken chop and mee mamak are worth every calorie. 1:00 PM
KAM LONG CURRY FISH HEAD Why feast on this glorious creation at 3pm? To beat the insane lunchtime queue, that’s why. If you’re lucky, you’ll only be subjected to a half-hour wait, for a taste of the only item on the menu: curry fish head. Served in a claypot, each portion comes teeming with ingredients such as lady’s fingers, cabbage, long beans, deep-fried tofu skin and, of course, a fresh red snapper head. 3:00 PM
JUST WANT COFFEE (JWC), THE FACTORY 30 Staying well ahead of the coffee culture trend in Johor is JWC, The Factory 30. It’s a little out of the way — a 30-minute drive outside of the city centre — but the experience is nothing short of incredible. Located in a former factory, the interior has been transformed into a stunning two-storey highceilinged café coolly furnished with industrial-chic elements. The baristas, dressed in factory jumpsuits, are serious about their coffee — they’ll patiently explain the drinks’ different nuances and how best to savour them. 5:00 PM
KILANG BATERI A refurbished factory, (former Eveready battery factory) on Jalan Tampoi, is now a sprawling platform on which young local entrepreneurs showcase their products. The official launch of Kilang Bateri is happening at the end of November but is already popular, thanks to social media. 7:00 PM
JALAN TAN HIOK NEE NIGHT MARKET Remember the quiet streets of JB’s heritage site? They come alive at night. Check out the rows of stalls offering antiques, clothes and an array of delicious street food. The perfect ending to a fulfilling day! 9:00 PM

I N SI D E I SKAN DAR MAL AYS IA HAVING ALREADY GAINED A SOLID FOOTHOLD IN JOHOR, COULD ISKANDAR MALAYSIA BE THE COUNTRY’S NEXT METROPOLIS BY 2025?
T
he skyline of Iskandar Malaysia has been rapidly changing since its inception in 2006. Even as more commercial and residential projects are taking shape, many catalyst projects, including several South-East Asian firsts, have sprouted up across this geographically strategic and economically viable region. What are some of its key drivers, and what is being done to ensure a sustainable future for this rising metropolis?
An Investment Destination At the current rate, it seems that Iskandar Malaysia is well on track to achieve its targeted maturity in 2025. According to the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), as of the end of 2014, Iskandar Malaysia had secured a cumulative committed investment of RM158.13 billion, and created more than 650,000 jobs in Johor. While the manufacturing sector makes up the bulk of the investments, at RM50.09 billion, IRDA will be focusing on growing the region’s tourism, healthcare and education sectors to facilitate a sustainable economic growth that benefits the local community.

TANJUNG LANGSAT PORT
A Home Away from Home A fast-growing ecosystem of healthcare, education and lifestyle services is just one reason why you should consider living in Iskandar Malaysia. Here are six more.
Better accessibility
Travelling to Johor Bahru City Centre from Singapore is now quicker and more convenient, thanks to the new shuttle train service by Keretapi Tanah Melayu that kicked off in mid-2015, carrying commuters between JB Sentral and Woodlands Checkpoint seven times a day. Not forgetting the muchtalked-about highspeed rail project, which will connect five cities from Singapore to Malaysia, including Nusajaya.
Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) An initiative by the Government of Malaysia, MM2H accords successful overseas applicants a renewable longstay visa of 10 years in the country, along with a full battery of benefits to encourage settling down in Malaysia. No more troublesome short-term visa renewals!
Low cost of living
The cost of living in Malaysia is relatively low compared with neighbouring countries. Malaysia is ranked 29th after Singapore, HK, Japan, China and Thailand on Numbeo’s 2015 cost of living report. Coupled with the country’s weakperforming currency of late, there’s no better time than the present to explore your investment opportunities in a region as economically viable as Iskandar Malaysia.
Favourable exchange rates
As long as you’re coming from a country with a currency stronger than that of Malaysia, the odds will most certainly be in your favour.
Food, glorious food With an impressive number of generations-old eating houses filled with hungry locals at any time of the day, it is evident that Iskandar Malaysia is blessed with excellent chefs – and gourmands.
Wide expanse of space
There is no shortage of land in this vast region – at least, compared to space-starved countries like Singapore. Why contend with staying in a crammed three-room flat whose master bedroom can hardly accommodate a wardrobe, when you could have your own front-porch garden or private pool?

LIVIN G T HE G O OD LI FE IN KU L A I WITH FRIENDLY SMILES AND STRESS-BUSTING ACTIVITIES, AND A CAFÉ NAMED HAPPY LAND, IT’S CLEAR WHY PEOPLE ARE ESCHEWING THE RAT RACE FOR THE DISARMING CHARMS OF KULAI
T
here’s something remarkably arresting about this town. Kulai’s unique identity is forged by the strong community spirit that resonates through its laid-back culture and gregarious people. Kulai is strategically situated within the northern region of Iskandar Malaysia and is easily accessible from the Woodlands or Tuas Checkpoints via the NorthSouth Highway; by rail operated by Malayan Railway (KTM); and by air via the Senai International Airport. Here, we present the top three must-dos in Kulai. SHOP, SAVE, AND REPEAT Mention Kulai, and Johor Premium Outlets come to mind. Occupying 45 acres of land area – that’s the size of nearly 25 football pitches – it’s a joint venture between Simon Property Group and Genting Berhad, and it marks the first Premium Outlets brand in South-East Asia. With its strong collection of more than 130 designer and fast-fashion brands offering daily savings of up to 65%, visitors from all over Asia – a 50:50 ratio
of locals to tourists – are flocking to Johor Premium Outlets for a hit or two of retail therapy. It’s no surprise, then, that the sprawling centre, which recruits only locals in order to build a sustainable workforce, has been enjoying double-digit growth year after year since it first opened in December 2011. INDULGE IN SIMPLE PLEASURES You can’t call yourself a true Johorian if you haven’t been to Happy Land. We arrived at the nondescript-looking cafeteria at 4pm on a Tuesday to find it packed to the gills with locals sitting on old-school booth seats
and chatting over bowls of colourful desserts that Happy Land has been renowned for since 1976. Besides serving up a dizzying array of desserts including several permutations of ice kachang, Happy Land also offers rojak – a party-in-yourmouth mix of turnip, pineapple, cucumber, and fried dough fritter chunks generously coated with homemade aromatic rojak sauce. MAKE A HOLE-IN-ONE Blessed with vast, verdant landscapes, Kulai is home to The Legends Golf & Country Resort, whose courses were specially designed by world-famous golf champions Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. For the more adventurous, check out Riders Lodge, a horse-riding facility within The Legends Golf & Country Resort – enjoy scenic rides through jungle trails at the nearby National Park. “I call Kulai the five-minute town – whatever you need is within five minutes. Before I moved to Kulai, I lived in Kuala Lumpur. There, everyone is busy with their own lives. It would be shocking if someone actually paused to ask you about your day! That’s why the difference in the people here is especially stark – because it’s a small town, the community spirit in Kulai is strong.” Chriz Liew, who moved to Kulai from Kuala Lumpur
BONUS: Feast on Loquat Crispy Duck No visit to Kulai is complete without stopping by Restoran Kim Lon Star for its signature loquat crispy duck, which is roasted then deep-fried to ensure the skin is crisp while the meat remains tender and succulent. Try its salted egg fried tofu, too – it’s incredibly tasty.
