MELISSA NEW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL #4 PROJECT:
ROLE: LEAD INTERIOR DESIGNER
THE NEW MELISSA ISD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS THE FOURTH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR A GROWING DISTRICT IN MELISSA, TEXAS. THE CONCEPT IS TO CELEBRATE THE UNIQUENESS OF THE MELISSA STUDENTS AND HOW THEY DIFFERENTIATE THEMSELVES FROM THEIR CONTEMPORARIES. SIMILAR TO THE MELISSA’S MASCOT, THE CARDINAL, AND HOW IT STANDS OUT FROM ITS ENVIRONMENT. THIS CONCEPT IS TRANSLATED ARCHITECTURALLY BY THE USE OF RED FRAMES AGAINST A NEUTRAL PALETTE.

MANSFIELD ALMA MARTINEZ INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL PROJECT:
ROLE: INTERIOR DESIGNER
THE MANSFIELD ALMA MARTINEZ INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL IS THE NEWEST INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL FOR MANSFIELD ISD. THE UNIQUENESS OF THIS CAMPUS IS THE TWO DIFFERENT ACADEMIES WITHIN THE SCHOOL IN ADDITION TO THE TRADITIONAL COURSES. THE STEM ACADEMY (PURPLE ON PLAN) AND THE FINE ARTS ACADEMY (BLUE ON PLAN). TO DISTINGUISH THESE ACADEMIES APART, MISD CHALLENGED OUR TEAM TO SEPARATE THESE ACADEMIES WITHIN THE BUILDING ARCHITECTURALLY AND WITH BRANDING. THE SOLUTION WAS TO CREATE COLORFULLY BRANDED INTERIOR ENTRIES, IN CONTRAST, TO CLEAN CRISP MATERIAL PALETTE THROUGHOUT THE MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING. AN INDIVIDUAL CAN VIEW ALL THESE ENTRANCES FROM THE CAMPUS HEART, THE LIBRARY, MARKED AS #2 ON THE PLAN.

LITTLE ELM STRIKE & WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOL PROJECT:
ROLE: INTERIOR DESIGNER
STRIKE AND WALKER MIDDLE SCHOOLS ARE TWO IDENTICAL NEW MIDDLE SCHOOLS FOR LITTLE ELM ISD. THE NOTABLE DESIGN ELEMENTS IN THESE BUILDINGS ARE THE LARGE AMOUNTS OF COLLABORATION SPACES AND THE DRAMATIC WOOD CEILINGS THAT PHYSICALLY AND METAPHORICALLY CONNECT THE ARTS (STAGE) TO THE SCIENCES (MAKER-SPACE). INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION IS A RUNNING THEME IN THIS BUILDING. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION IS THE CLASSROOMS THAT HAVE THE ABILITY TO OPEN UP TO ONE ANOTHER, CREATING A LARGE SPACE FOR CROSS-DISCIPLINE PROJECTS.

UTA INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENTS COLLABORATED WITH GOOD SPACE, AN OAK CLIFF REAL ESTATE AND DEVELOPMENT COMPANY. THE PROFESSOR CHALLENGED THE CLASS WITH DESIGNING LIVE/WORK SCENARIOS FOR A RAPIDLY GROWING, HIP NEIGHBORHOOD OF DALLAS. ANT COLONIES FORMS INSPIRED MY DESIGN SOLUTION. WHEN RESEARCHING OTHER ANIMALS AND INSECTS THAT LIVED/WORKED TOGETHER, I WAS FASCINATED BY THE FORMS THE ANT COLONIES TOOK. I TRANSLATED THIS ARCHITECTURALLY THROUGH THE USE OF ROUND SKYLIGHTS TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL NATURAL LIGHT.

REFORM: PAPER INSTALLATION PROJECT:
INDEPENDENT STUDY:
THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON REQUIRED A PRINTED RECEIPT FOR ALL PRINT JOBS INSTEAD OF THE PREVIOUS TRADITION OF AN EMAILED RECEIPT. MANY STUDENTS COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS NEW REQUIREMENT FOR VARIOUS REASONS. ONE, THE COST OF PRINTING THIS RECEIPT BECAME THE STUDENTS RESPONSIBILITY, AND TWO, THE WASTED RECEIPT RARELY MADE ITS WAY TO RECYCLING. ANOTHER INTERIOR DESIGN STUDENT AND I DECIDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE LARGE AMOUNTS OF PAPER WASTED OVER A TWO-HOUR LUNCH BREAK BY CREATING AN ART INSTALLATION WITH THE COLLECTED RECEIPTS. UNFORTUNATELY, THIS DID NOT CHANGE THE UNIVERSITIES POLICY. HOWEVER, THE INSTALLATION IMPACTED THE STUDENTS TO PAUSE BEFORE PRINTING TO SAVE TREES.
SPECIAL APPROVAL FROM THE DEAN OF ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAM DIRECTOR WAS GRANTED IN ORDER TO WORK OVER THE SUMMER ON THIS PASSION PROJECT IN THE INTERIOR DESIGN STUDIO. APPROVAL WAS GRANTED AFTER MY CO-CREATOR AND I PRESENTED OUR PROJECT TO BOTH INDIVIDUALS.

A MUSEUM BY THE SEA IS HAVING DIFFICULTY MANAGING VISITORS; THERE ARE TOO MANY TO HOUSE ON THE SITE, WHICH CREATES A LONG LINE ALONG THE PUBLIC SIDEWALK. THE CHALLENGE IS TO BUILD A VISITOR CENTER AND GARDEN TO CONNECT TO THE EXISTING MUSEUM TO SERVE THE VISITORS BETTER. MY SOLUTION FOR THE VISITOR CENTER TAKES CUES FROM THE EXISTING MUSEUMS HEIGHT, ARCHITECTURAL VERNACULAR, AND POSITION ON THE SITE.

My contribution to the instillation was lead designer in the investigate of a modular form piece.
DESIGN SOLUTION
A triangular form was used to create a modular piece. The angels give it visual interest and the tabs allow for one form attach to the next in a seamless fashion.
