As a Mexican American photographer and 25-year resident of Staten Island, I sought to highlight the beauty and unique stories of Staten Island by capturing the often-overlooked aspects that make this borough a dynamic community. I photographed details of everyday life to challenge Staten Island’s infamous stereotypes and offer a more authentic portrayal of this multilayered place I call home. In addition to my photographs, I recorded intimate interviews with residents from different parts of the “island” and different attachments to it. Together, I captured Staten Island’s authenticity: one where culture, art, history, age and diversity contribute to the vibrant tapestry of experiences here.
