EXTENDED PRACTICE STATEMENT OF INTENT
Blog Address:
!a-foster1114.blogspot.com ! Statement of intent:
!A graphic designer from the North. My passion lies with image based design, where I try to be playful and fun with each brief I am given.
!! ! Subjects / Themes
!The briefs I have chosen this year will use the skills I have obtained throughout the last
two years to produce a body of work which describes me as a designer. The main skills I want to demonstrate are : + Print + Image making Design Disciplines / Creative Development
!! + Branding + Image Making !! !! !! ! Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when?
!+ Screen Printing
+ Web Design + Packaging design
!I will attend the writing classes available from the college t try and improve my
essay writing skills. I think this is important as the essay last year was my lowest marks so needs addressing.
!I will also attend the workshops with Simon to improve my web developing skills. I have found the skills on web design we have been taught valuable so I am interested in furthering my knowledge.
! !!
Brief 1: Indie Game. Colab with Martin O’dea
Deadline
21st October
Rationale:
!
To design a pitch for the opening stage of an independent video game. This should
give an indication of the visual style of the rest of the game: Settings, characters etc
!We will create the brand and identity for a new, in-development independent video
game. At this stage of development, the developer is starting to consider graphical styles for the game. We will be pitching a visual concept for an early stage of the game and also indicate how this could be applied across a publicity campaign.
!
Brief 2: Hadrian’s Wall
Deadline
15th February
Rationale:
!To update the current wayfinding, information plaques and the printed ephemera
currently in use by the English Heritage for Hadrian’s Wall. To attract families to the Roman Wall I will also create information plaques and ‘adventure packs’ for children so that they can also learn about the wall on their visit and to attract full families to the North of England’s no.1 tourist destination.
!
Brief 3: Open Garage Brewing Co.
Deadline
8th March
Rationale:
!This summer me and a friend created the Open Garage Brewing Co.and have
began to produce our own range of beers. This brief allows me to brand my new beers, produce promotional products and a create a website for the Open Garage Brewing Co. Packaging will also need to be considered.
!! !!
Brief 4: Radio Schematics. Colab with Martin O’dea
Deadline
22nd March
Rationale:
!We will design, build and promote a new platform for people to upload podcasts and
host their own radio shows from. This platform will be flexible, noncommittal and not restricted to certain groups or locations. This is designed to invite people to submit their own shows to our online platform, allowing them to increase their listenership. Our platform would curate audio content and would aim to build an audience of its own.
!
Brief 5: It’s Ok
Deadline
12th April
Rationale:
!
OK Comics is set out like a “posh, upscale book shop”. It is clean, brightly lit and its store front branding reflects this. Unfortunately the branding is not consistently applied to all the other OK comics products.! Consistency is key to a successful brand. Working with their existing brand, I will create a stronger set of deliverables that transfers the store front aesthetic to the rest of the product range!
!
Brief 6: Studioooo Exhibition
Deadline
May ?
Rationale:
! !
As Studioooo we are going to host an exhibition that features work of our own and work of guest artists and designers. The work featured will be kept consistent under a theme that we decide upon. The exhibition will also be an outlet for the work and clothing that we produce as individuals throughout the year. Aswell as organising the event we are going to design all props that will feature in the exhibition to make it stand out from any other, as a studio our focus is on fun so we need to ensure that this comes through in the exhibition. Brief 7: Studioooo Poetry Book
Deadline
May ?
Rationale:
!
Set by Laura Dockrill and ‘studioooo’; The aim of this task is to produce a small poetry illustration book that will be based on a chosen theme.
!
The content will be tongue in cheek, light hearted and humorous, marketed toward young adults and creatives.
!
Research into Dockrill’s work is essential so that the finished product could sit alongside her existing work.
! ! !! !
Brief 8: Unknown YCN Brief
Deadline
?
Rationale:
!! After enjoying the collaborative YCN brief last year I will look to do another YCN brief
this year. I found last year that I preferred the range of briefs on offer from YCN as their briefs seemed to welcome my style of working over others.
!! !! !!
CoP / Research Theme
!To what extent are are the disciplines of graphic design and illustration similar? !+ Why the brain reacts to image ... Why image is so important... + Graphic design explanation ... what is it + Graphic design and its use of image + Illustration explanation ... what is it + Why are they moving apart ? + What is an image based designer + Why is an image based designer still important today. + Are they moving together or apart ?

!Interview with Lord Whitney - Design studio based in Leeds who sit on the blurred line between graphic design and illustration !! RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Deadlin November e
!Interview with Matthew The Horse - Illustrator based in Leeds. I am interested to find out his views on graphic design and illustration moving further away from each other / closer together. I will also ask about the addition to the new illustration corse and if that is due to the separation of the professions.
!!
RESEARCH ACTIVITY:
Deadlin December e
!! Research into the different subjects art students can take at universities around
the UK. I will also have to research into each subject and try to define them so that I can produce some sort of publication which will benefit those leaving A level and foundation and are confused about the separate subjects and what they entail.
