We chose biomimicry as a starting point as we thought it would provide an opportunity in exploring responsitivity and an architecture with many potential beyond the surface aesthetic. We also initially thought it would be interesting to look at nature as the ultimate precedent in our design and their ability to optimally adapt to the local context without any mechanical or artificial influences. (Will be later discussed in design concept)

INITIAL PRECEDENT VOLTADOM : SKYLAR TIBBITS
Voltadom definition - producing the vaulted cones
We initially looked at the Voltadom by Skylar Tibbits that was posted on the LMS as an initial starting point in finding out what biomimicry is in relation to parametric modelling. The Voltadom is an attempt at creating a passageway that is filled with vaulted ‘surfaces’ reminiscent of the ceilings of gothic cathedrals. The main core of this project seems to be producing an innovative fabrication method of a very complex double-curved vault surface by finding a way in converting these into easily rolled sheets of material.

EXPLORING RESPONSIVITY We have collectively decided to explore elements that would allow for a more responsive design thus various methods in grasshopper were investigated to achieve this. Initial exploration involves the use of point attractors on a regular two dimensional grid. Later, on a surface grid.

EXPLORING MORPHOLOGY Finding ways to induce dynamic elements and the feeling of growth or change throughout a form. Inspiration was taken from a project called Transitional Morphology that experimented on the change from pure structure to paneled surface relative to wind and temperature.

DIRECTED MORPHOLOGY A WAY TO CONTROL
Discovering ways to triangulate and manipulate the angle of panels. This is further developed by adding elements of responsivity into the definition like point attractors. Combining the previous two definitions together to produce reactive angled panels enabling the addition of other potential elements such as shade, shadows and focused light.

The interest in producing a design that plays with the perception. Precedents explored include Minifie’s Centre for Ideas and AA dLab’s Fallen Star installation. Designs that excite the people; producing spatial illusions that frame the context in the case of Minifie’s Centre for Ideas, and sensory manipulation that centres around certain themes in the case of the Fallen Star.

Further explored the usage of sampling images as the manipulating element to the responsive model In this case, we manipulated the rotation of panels around an axis, tilting them in accordance to a variable (the image) in which they respond to.
