MATCH PREVIEW CHELSEA will be expecting the defence of their UEFA Champions League trophy to burst into life in Denmark after a stuttering start in their opening group game. The holders appeared on course to pick up three points against Juventus in Group E a fortnight ago after a stunning double from summer recruit Oscar gave the Blues the upper hand. But the Italian champions pulled a goal back before half-time and then took advantage of slack play to equalise 10 minutes from time through Fabio Quagliarella. John Obi Mikel was heavily criticised for carelessly giving the
ball away in the build-up to Juventus’ equaliser, but captain John Terry was equally culpable for losing Quagliarrella and then trying to play offside. The Blues’ defence has been suspect at times this season and was brutally exposed by Atletico Madrid during the Super Cup mauling at the end of August. Nordsjaelland, though, are unlikely to present Chelsea with the same dangers posed by the likes of Falcao and Quagliarella in what is their Champions League debut. Kasper Hjulmand’s side became Danish champions for the first time last season and were spared the demands of qualifying after going straight into the group phase. The draw, though, was unkind as, in addition to having to face Chelsea and Juventus, they were also lumbered with Champions League regulars Shakhtar Donetsk.
A goal in each half from Henrik Mkhitaryan secured Shakhtar a 2-0 home win over Nordsjaelland in the Danes’ first match at this level and Hjulmand’s side produced a cautious display. Tuesday 2nd October 2012 19:45
However, Hjulmand was satisfied with his team’s performance in Ukraine and believes Nordsjaelland are on the right track in the competition. And, for their first home game in the Champions League, Nordsjaelland will be hoping that their Farum Park ground can unsettle a Chelsea side used to playing at grander surrounds. With a capacity of just over 10,000, Nordsjaelland fans will be expected to drum up a noisy atmosphere, but given Chelsea’s vast experience, the underdogs may need more than a 12th man. Anything other than a win for Roberto Di Matteo’s side would be a major surprise, but Chelsea will know the pressure is on to claim three points after being held in their opening match. The Blues have the creative tools at their disposal to run out convincing winners, but will need Fernando Torres to rediscover his ruthless streak, and hope there is no complacency at the back.
