RACEPLACE 2.0 BY BOB BABBIT T

F

rom the very beginning, RACEPLACE has been about being the ultimate connector between the race director and the race participant. For the past 30 years, if you were trying to find out where to race and when to race, we were there for you. RACEPLACE is the absolute best in the business when it comes to showcasing event ads and event listings. But in this day and age, we realize that we can be doing even more to not only provide you with the ability to find the best event for you and your family on these pages and on RACEPLACE.com, but to also provide some editorial content that will help you get into the very best shape of your life and connect you with like- minded people who share similar fitness goals and dreams. At the end of the day, an event is only the beginning of the conversation. How do you eat better, how do you train more efficiently, how can you get your kids to embrace our endurance sports lifestyle? RACEPLACE won’t be providing answers to all of those questions right away, but it is our goal to address as many of these questions as possible. In this issue, besides our Road Runner Sports Athlete of the Month, we’re also adding NUTRITIONPLACE, written by one of foremost authorities on the subject, Mr. Matt Fitzgerald, a long time endurance athlete and prolific author. His books Racing Weight and 80/20 Running-Slow Down to Go Fast- are perfect for the mix of brand new runners and seasoned endurance athletes who make up our RACEPLACE family.

The event weekend is called the Woodstock of Triathlon for good reason. RACEPLACE has been Southern California’s go-to resource for running, triathlon, water sports, obstacle events and cycling for the past 30 years. We hope you enjoy the articles in this issue and we’re looking forward to adding even more editorial in the issues to come. Here’s to an awesome spring of training and racing! 5 Key Diet Habits for Runners BY MAT T FITZGERALD

O

ver the past 15 years I have studied the eating patterns of elite runners over the world. These athletes consistently practice five key habits that together define the optimal diet for all runners. The good news is that they’re easy to follow.

SCIENCE HAS CONSISTENTLY SHOWN THAT WHEN RUNNERS REDUCE THEIR CARB INTAKE, THEIR PERFORMANCE LEVEL DROPS. Habit 1: Eat everything.

Elite runners don’t avoid entire food groups such as grains or meat and fish, and neither should you. Runners who do impose such restrictions on themselves frequently develop avoidable problems such as iron-deficiency anemia and chronic fatigue.

Habit 2: Eat quality.

While they don’t forbid themselves anything, elite runners eat minimal amounts of the following four low-quality food types: refined grains, sweets, processed meats, and fried foods.

Habit 3: Eat carbs.

Carbohydrate has developed a bad reputation in the general population, but elite runners still eat them in abundance. They’re smart to do so: Science has consistently shown that when runners reduce their carb intake, their performance level drops.

Habit 4: Eat plenty.

Elite runners tend to focus on making sure they eat enough rather than on avoiding eating too much. Runners who eat even slightly too little often suffer consequences that include poor workout performance, slow recovery, and increased risk of injury and illness.

Habit 5: Eat individually.

Each runner is unique. Elite runners are good about paying attention to how their individual body responds to different eating patterns and adjusting their diet accordingly. Follow their example and develop your own version of the optimal running diet.

EVENT SPOTLIGHT #WILDFLOWERTRI

[ TRI CALIFORNIA ]

Wildflower Triathlon 2014

T

hey call it the Woodstock of Triathlon. Every May for the past 20 years I have driven to the legendary event known as Wildflower and have always come away better for the experience. At most races, people are scattered around town at random hotels. At Wildflower, family, friends and clubs get together to camp together, stay in motor homes together, eat together, race together and bond together. It is the ultimate family weekend. In the festival area there is a great playground for kids, vendors from every major multisport company to showcase their 2015 gear and there are awesome bands on the main stage all three days with a few breaks in the action for cool clinics and

Q&As with the world’s best triathletes. Plus, there are three great racing options including, on Saturday, a mountain bike triathlon with distances short enough for everyone and the legendary half distance race that same day. How do you know a race is legendary? Easy. There is a stairway by the transition area with the names of the winners throughout the years. Names like Paula NewbyFraser, Chris McCormack, Tim DeBoom, Jesse Thomas, Cameron Widoff, Heather Jackson, Terenzo Bozzone and Peter Reid to name just a few. When legends choose your race, you’re obviously doing something right. On Sunday is the Olympic distance event where the top collegiate athletes

take center stage. Some athletes can’t get enough and actually do both the half on Saturday and the Olympic on Sunday. If you haven’t been to Wildflower before, this is a great year to check it off your bucket list. But that statement comes with a warning. Once you’ve been there, you’ll have a hard time not comings back every single May. Just like me. See you there!

5k First Training Program

I

n 25 years of running and triathlon and nearly 20 years of coaching, I know the hardest step that anyone takes when starting a new fitness routine is the first. In our kickoff article for TRAININGPLACE, we’re going to take that initial step right alongside you with the “First Finish Line” 5K Program.

Why the 5K?

It’s easy to wrap your brain around—only 3.1 miles! You can fit it into your schedule by simply completing three 40-45-minute workouts a week. It’s the perfect launching pad for your fitness goals—regardless of age or body type--and the most com mon distance of running, triathlon, and obstacle races.

• •

Schedule a check-up—get your doctor’s okay to start a running/walking program. Purchase a good pair of running shoes—investing in a proper fitting shoe will help you finish your event with a smile. Have a plan—use our 5K First® Training Program to guide you through training for your first event. Tell your friends! With their encouragement, or better yet, companionship, you’re likely to be more successful in your training.

TRAININGPLACE The 5K First Program® The 5K First Training Program is an 8-week plan that alternates jogging with 1-minute walking segments to enable your body to comfortably adjust to 20-minutes of continuous running.

WHAT IF I ONLY WANT TO WALK A 5K?

The training table provided in this article is the road map to your workouts. · · ·

Each row in the table represents a week of training The three columns represent days and provide the recommended workouts for a given week In each cell of the table, the top line indicates the total time for each run/walk (not including warm-up) for that day. The bottom line specifies the ratio of time running to walking through which you will be alternating

For example, for the first workout—You’ll be alternating between jogging one minute and walking one minute for a total of 20 minutes.

You’re almost ready to go! A few more points · · ·

Schedule your workouts ahead of time, and try to plan them with a day off in between. The number one goal should be to accomplish all three workouts each week—even if that means training on consecutive days. Start each session with a warm-up. Walk spiritedly, ride the exercise bike, or use the elliptical for 5 minutes before you begin your jog. Maintain a “conversational pace”--You should be able to converse with your workout partner using short sentences while you’re jogging.

Run 1 Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4 Week 5 Week 6 Week 7

Week 8

Run 2

No problem! Use the same training table with either of these adjustments: · Omit the jogging portions of each workout, and just walk the entire amount of suggested time for that day. · Or, for a little added challenge, alternate between a fast-paced walk and a regular-paced walk.
