Bute Through the Lens
Paul loves the variety the island gives him as a photographer. Even though Bute is small, it has a wealth of scenic opportunities including landscapes, seascapes, wildlife, urban-scap - the island has it all. ”No matter where you go on the island, no matter what time of day you can always capture the island’s beauty. No place is too far away to get a surprise around every corner.”
“
Paul Simpson
“
No place is too far away to get a surprise around every corner
Martin Tytler
As a photographer living and working on Bute the island provides boundless inspiration for landscape photography and I love the natural and man-made light which surrounds us. I often incorporate both sources in my images. From seascapes and landscapes through sunrise, sunset and the night sky, the natural and built environment here is as diverse as an entire country, simply in microcosm. Include the changing seasons and you can appreciate why there are several lifetimes worth of images that could be worked from beautiful Bute.
In 2016 Andy Walters started a project to create immersive 360 degree images of the island from the air using a drone. There are views of beaches, bays and areas of Rothesay and other settlements. Bute has many off island supporters and Andy hopes
that creating these images prompts some of these Bute fans to make a nostalgic return visit to the island‌.
Bute’s Beaches Being an island, Bute has plenty of coastline to explore and loads of beaches to choose from
Scalpsie Bay
Want to see seals? A beautiful sandy beach with a thriving seal colony at the northern end
Kerrycroy
Best Beach for those short on time Just 5 mins south of Rothesay by car this little beach has its own Tudor village complete with Mapole. Easily accessible and not too busy.
Glencallum Bay
A lovely remote beach It’s a healthy trek walk to this beach but well worth it on a sunny day.
Ettrick Bay
Buy an ice cream at the cafe and build a sandcastle Easily accessible with car park, café amenities and there’s a bus from Rothesay. The south end of the beach also has a parking area and is great for walking dogs...
Langalbuinoch (Stravannan Bay)
Best Beach for white sand The islander’s favourite. Rarely busy and only accessible down a long and bumpy track, get away from it all here...
Straad (St Ninians bay)
Best Beach for a quiet walk Nestled in a bay by a peninsula. Take in the views and walk out to the ruins of the old herring smoke house.
Getting Here
We truly are Scotland’s most accessible island. Only 1.5hrs from Glasgow. Whether you take the train or drive it couldn’t be any easier. Just a 40 minute journey along the banks of the Clyde to Wemyss Bay, then your holiday starts as you leave your troubles behind on the 35 min ferry crossing. One of the most frequent ferry crossings in Scotland with two comfortable boats shuttling cars and passengers every hour. There is no need to book ahead, just come on down!
If you want to continue your holiday in to the beautiful Argyll countryside you can take the “wee” ferry from Rhubodach at the northern end of Bute. A brief 400m trip gets you to the other side. This has to be one of the shortest ferry trips in Scotland. Again, no need to book as this roll on roll off ferry departs every 30 min. So if you fancy taking in more of Scotland’s jaw dropping scenery why not come by the Rest and be Thankful or down through Inverary to catch the Colintraive ferry.

Restaurant open 7 days from 12pm Licensed, serves great food, Bute Brew & Italian coffee!
Taste Bute
Bute is home to fantastic artisan producers. We have two outstanding craft butchers who source locally and are happy to share their culinary knowledge. We have two excellent fishmongers, and locally smoked fish is always available from Ritchie’s. For great seasonal produce try Jessmay’s greengrocers, the Electric Bakery for daily fresh bread or if you’re looking for sourdough try Greenfry’s artisan baking at weekends. Eating out? There’s plenty of choice in Rothesay. Try Harry Haw’s, the Vistoria Hotel restaurant & Ghillie’s Bar , the newly refurbished Glenburn Hotel, Brechin’s on Bridge St, The Black Bull pub or the Bonnie Clyde in Gallowgate. For vegetarian/vegan lunches, cakes and great coffee try Musicker in the High St. The Kingarth Hotel at the south end of Bute serves locally sourced meat and seafood or Ettrick Bay Tearoom with great cakes and sap up breakfasts, whilst admiring the view. The Port Inn in Port Bannatyne dishes up homemade food and an awesome pint. For a taste of the Deep South, go all Cajun at the Honky Tonk in Ardbeg
Stay With the Isle of Bute having so much to offer, why not make the most of it. Come and stay. Bute has something to suit everyone. Hotels and Bed & Breakfasts are plentiful. For those looking for camping, Roseland holiday park has glamping pods, serviced sites for camper and caravans, all with panoramic views from Canada Hill. Bute Backpackers is a private room-only hostel located close to the town centre. Why not take a house, cottage or flat for your holiday. There are plenty of self-catering establishments both in town and out in the countryside. So whether you have a party of 26 or 2 and want to stay on a working farm or in the heart of Rothesay there’s lots of choice. For a full list of accommodation on Bute check out Visitbute.com

Walking Bute has plenty of opportunities for walking. The island is fairly low lying so there are no strenuous climbs, just 360 degrees of beautiful views. From the recently established West Island Way to the trails and paths through the Bute Community Forest, there are plenty to choose from. Everyone on Bute will be happy to tell you their favourite walks or pick up a map and go on your own island adventure.
West Island Way The West Island Way was the first waymarked long distance island footpath in Scotland. You could walk it between one and five days but it is best walked over two. The route is waymarked, running the complete length of the island for around 25 miles. It crosses a dramatic landscape, with a beautiful coastline, beaches, farmland, the moors and forests. Pick up a Discover Bute Landscape Partnership Scheme Map from most local shops to find your way round the West Island Way and along other walks. This long-distance walk can easily be broken down into a series of shorter walks. For more information visit the official website at www.westislandway.co.uk
Cycling
Bute is a fantastic destination for cyclists. It’s big enough to offer a wide range of cycling options, but compact enough that the main town of Rothesay is never far away. The short ferry journey means that it’s ideal for a day out with the bikes and it has some truly splendid views and scenery.
The Serpentine
The public roads around Bute offer a number of cycling options. There is a 23-mile loop that takes in most of the perimeter of the island, and also roads that bisect it and thereby provide shorter routes.
Whilst just under half a mile this Category 2 climb with 14 hairpin bends is not for the faint of heart. To find it, turn left off the ferry and cycle down to the miniroundabout taking a right up Bishop Street for 100 yards. The official start of the timed hill climb is outside the estate agents on the manhole cover 15 yards down from the hill.
If you fancy a bit of climbing, then look no further than the Serpentine (up Canada Hill). Lurking behind Guildford Square in Rothesay lies one of Scotland’s most technical hill climbs.
On clearing the last bend and entering the long straight, the second entrance on the left marks the finish so you can rest and try to stop your legs and lungs burning. The record is 1 minute 57 seconds but any time under 3 minutes is good.
Rothesay – Kingarth – Mount Stuart Loop (approximately 11 miles)
Go straight ahead from the ferry and continue up the hill out of the town past the hospital and swimming pool. Cycle past the Scalpsie Bay turn-off and continue along the road that takes you past Bute Golf Course. The Kingarth Hotel makes a great refreshment stop. From here take the road back to Rothesay but consider taking a detour into Kilchattan Bay village, visit Mount Stuart or take the road through Bruchag to Rothesay.
Rothesay – Ettrick Bay Loop (approximately 10 miles)
Turn right off the Rothesay ferry and cycle out through the town of Port Bannatyne. Take the next left signposted for Ettrick Bay and after half a mile turn left for Ballianlay. There are wonderful views of Arran on this road which eventually takes you back into Rothesay. Taking a detour to Ettrick Bay or
St Ninian’s Bay will reward you with some fantastic views across the Sound of Bute.
Rothesay – Ettrick Bay – Scalpsie Bay Loop (approximately 15 miles)
Follow the route described above, but do not follow the road back into Rothesay. Instead, turn right at Greenan Mill and follow the coast road to Scalpsie Bay. Turn left at the T-junction which will bring you back into Rothesay again.
The Tramway – Port Bannatyne to Ettrick Bay
(approximately 3 miles each way) This is the path along the back of the park at Port Bannatyne, a pavement wide enough to cycle and a hard-topped path from the Greenwood Crossing to Ettrick Bay. It is suitable for young families as it is off-road and safe. More experienced cyclists can take the road to avoid the kissing gates.
Things to See Brewery tour at Bute Brew Co In keeping with island life, brewery tours are very informal but you’re sure to learn something new. After finding out how our beer is made, you can hang out with the team watching them work as you try the brews. Or sit out in the beer garden and eat some great food courtesy of Greenfry. Their stone baked Pizzas are getting quite some following. Once you are hooked on this fine island beer you can head to the shop and buy some to take home. “Fantastic Rustic brewery, lovely products and friendly faces. Absolutely worth a walk up the hill to have a look (and taste!)”
Ascog Hall Fernery and Gardens
The most outstanding feature of this three acre garden is the Victorian Fernery, a beautiful sunken structure fed by natural spring waters and housing many fern species, including a 1,000 year old Todea Barbara or King Fern - the only survivor from the original collection. Unusual and exotic perennials, shrubs and trees - from the blue Meconopsis varieties to the fiery red Chilean Fire Tree and the purple display of the Northern Marsh orchid - await the observant visitor in this sheltered garden while all visitors will enjoy the display of seasonal colours in the various garden rooms. An additional garden feature is the now accessible stables and coach house ruins, providing a reminder of long lost times
Ardencraig Gardens
The existing gardens originally formed part of the larger layout designed by Percy Cane for the owners of Ardencraig House.
The walled garden was acquired by Rothesay Town council in 1970, and latterly by Argyll and Bute Council, and has been developed to create a propagation, education and show garden. Extensive bedding and fuchsia displays contain some of the best cultivars available.
Rothesay Victorian Toilets.
Yes you read that right, toilets as a visitor attraction! Tripadvisor rate them as the second-best toilets in the world; that’s right THE WORLD. So, you gotta see what all the excitement is about and “spend a penny” too.
Bute Museum
A great way to find out some of the fascinating history and information about the island. You can see and feel the artefacts. Lovingly compiled and curated by enthusiastic staff. Great for children and adults alike.
Rothesay Castle
Once a bulwark against invading Viking forces, Rothesay Castle dates back to the early 13th century and is remarkably well preserved in spite of its age. Steeped in Scottish and Viking history, this fortress tells its own story.
St Blane’s Chapel
This amazingly atmospheric site, parts of which date back to the 13th century is short uphill walk from the parking area just past Dunagoil at the south end of the island.
Mount Stuart Britain’s most astounding Victorian Gothic mansion and one of the world’s great houses set within magnificent grounds. From glinting horoscope ceilings, a breathtaking marble chapel, a swimming pool, a secret passage, and an original First Folio of Shakespeare’s plays, Mount Stuart has something for everyone. Mount Stuart has enthusiastic guides who bring the stories of the Bute family and the history of the house vividly to life. There is a shuttle bus from the visitor centre to the house but if you have time, a stroll through the gardens and woodland is well worth it. There is a cafe at reception and also in the courtyard of the house. The full public season is from late March to the end of October but private and group tours can be arranged outwith these months. Once you have bought your ticket (garden or house/ garden) you can sign up for Mount Stuart membership and that entitles you to free repeat visits for a year. Treat yourself and visit Mount Stuart at your first opportunity it’s a true gem. “Architecture is simply outstanding, particularly the chapel. The stained glass windows, with the zodiac signs are breathtaking.” “Give yourself at least half a day to explore this wonderful find.” “Don’t forget your camera!”

Opened in 1938 on the Promenade in Rothesay, our Pavilion is an outstanding example of international modernist design. It has served the Isle of Bute and its visitors for eighty years as everything from grand ballroom and concert hall, to wedding venue and civic centre. Now, after decades of continuous use, battered by the elements on its waterfront location, this iconic edifice is showing its age. In 2014, Rothesay Pavilion charity formed working in close partnership with Argyll & Bute Council to rescue the building for future generations. Multiple funders have joined forces for a £12million restoration project due for completion in early 2019. When it reopens to the public Rothesay Pavilion will boast a fully restored main auditorium with one of the biggest sprung dance floors in Scotland, a purpose built exhibition space and shop, a new smaller venue for intimate concerts and club nights, roof top offices and a function room, and a café/bar with unequalled views across the bay. Follow Rothesay Pavilion’s story as it unfolds over the coming months on our website and Facebook page, and look out for our fascinating behind-the-scenes tours as the building works progress. W W W.
