Definition of Problems Mental Health

What is Mental Health?

How many people are currently affected?

Mental Health is a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. Mental illness is a general term that refers to a group of conditions and includes schizophrenia, eating disorders, anxiety and depression, and more. These conditions can significantly affect how a person feels, thinks, behaves, and interacts with other people.

Major Types of Metal Disorders?

1 in 5 4 Anxiety Disorder 20.1% of Australians aged 16-85 are living with a mental disorder (equivelent to 4.8 million people) and 45% of Australians are expected to suffer from mental disorder at some point in their life.

About

1/ 4

In New South Wales, 70% of males and 65% of females experienced low-level psychological distress, 20% of males and 21% of females experienced moderate-level psychological distress, 6% of males and 9% of females experienced high-level psychological distress, and 4% of males and 5% of females experienced very high-level psychological distress.

The prevalence of Mental disorders varies across age groups, with people in younger ages experiancing higher rates of disorder. More than a quarter(26%) of people aged 16-24 years and a similar proportion (25%) of people aged 25-34 years had a 12-month mental disorder compared with 5.9% of those aged 75-85 years old.

Metal Disorders in Workplace Causes

Effects

Benefits, if improved

• Exposure to workplace Violence

Mental illness costs business an average $3,200 per employee per annum in absenteeism and presenteeism. This rises to $5,600 for employees with severe mental illness

Return of $4.7 for every dollar invested.

Close proximity to Nature and psychologist sessions in workplace can signifcantly improve Mental health

Mental illness in young men aged 12 -25 alone has been estimated to cost the Australian econ-

Return of $2.0 for every dollar invested.

• Workrelated harassment or bulling • Work Pressure (lack of Work-Life Balance) • Poor Organizational Support & Justice • Poor Physical Environment A Steady increase has been seen in Mental illiness from the Surveys conducted in 2014-15 and 2017-18. A 3.5% increase in reported mental conditions from 4 million to 4.8 million people in 2017-18. A 2% increase in anxiety related conditions with 13.1 million australian affected in 2017-18. One in ten people (10.4%) had depression or feelings of depression, an increase from 8.9% in 2014-15. Around one in eight adults(13% or 2.4 million people) experienced high or very high levels of psychological distress. An increase from 11.7% in 2017-18.

• Lack of connection to Nature • Remote or Isolated work

omy $3.27 billion a year in lost productivity Annually $543 million is paid in worker’s compensation for work related mental health conditions

Metal Disorders in Tertiary Education

Introducing Physical Activity in workplaces are effective in improving mental health.

Return of $1.3 for every dollar invested.

Job control and Personlised Workspace provides employees with increased control over how, when and where they complete their work.

Architecture and Mental Health

Architectural Influence

External and Internal factors influencing building design. Externally air, light and ground are the major infuencing factors while internally thermal, acoustics, visual and olfactorfactors are influencial (Heggar et. al.,2012). To overcome these external and internal factors and to achieve a healthy wellbeing, the building design must adopt a number of strategies and systems.

In order to achieve and maintain the required levels of daylight a building should adopt a narrow floor plate design. In paticular the facade to floor plate centre distance should not exceed 7.5 meters for 75% of the regularly occupied spaces. (WELL Building Standard 2013)

Passive Design Strategies

Climate Consultant then further suggest the best set of design strategies that can be implemented to attain 100% comfortable hours for our users. Therefore the chart suggest that basic passive design strategies (like solar shading, evaporative cooling, Internal heat gains and Natural ventilation), a person would feel comfortable for 94% of the time during a typical day. To further achieve maximum (100%) comfortable hours HVAC systems will be required.

High Collaborations + Flexible spaces High Focus and Consentration zones

More and more organizations are questioning wheather open plan encourages collaboration, as every one thought. Open plan is better suited to extroverts, while different design solutions are required for introverts. Also design for mobility in workplace, forcing people to move. These create so-called “orchestrated chaos”, encouraging what it calls “casual collisions” or interactions that provoke unexpected conversations and new ideas.
