24th JANUARY2014

Theme of the week: ‘Involvement’ - “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin Dear CCA Community Last week we kick started the drive to ‘make our best better’ in external examination with our year 11 students. They were all participants in a mock results day which started off with an assembly and included a day of motivational speakers and future planning. The reason we run a results day which mirrors the real thing is to give students an experience which does one of two things: gives a confirmation of the work of students who achieve well or two gives a wake up call for those who did not do as well as they expected, either way a very strong message is given and we always see an increase in intensity and drive from our year 11 students after this event. The mocks also give a good indication of strengths and weaknesses of students in various subjects so that teachers can now personalise revision and intervention programmes for all students. There will be many extra classes now put on for the Summer exams, before and after school. I’d like to encourage you to make sure that as parents and guardians you are aware of these classes and support students in their attendance. They really do make all the difference!

You may remember the launch of our new North Essex County girls’ cricket Academy last term. After much coaching our girls play their first tournament this week. We wish them every success. Last but not least, huge congratulations to our very own Katie Allington, who teaches PE at CCA, for winning a Special Recognition Award at the Essex Teaching Awards. She was nominated by students for her inspiring teaching methods, her constant support and her dedication to CCA sports clubs. Well done.

Other year groups had data conferences when the mock results day was happening for year 11. Here they saw how they were progressing against their amber (3 Levels) and green (4 Levels) targets. The introduction of these simple targets have been highly motivating for students who can easily see how well they are doing and regular marking, commented on by OFSTED shows how ever higher targets can be achieved. Very kind regards Our newly returned VIth Formers also begin their mock exams this week and they too will have a mock results day in February. I wish them every success in these exams.

Amazing Achievement

UCAS Applications

It was lovely to share the successes of our VIVO VIPs this week in assembly. A number of students, received badges for this achievement and will also receive a weekly treat. The winners have all been regularly awarded VIVOs by their subject teachers for things such as ‘positive attitude to learning’, ‘leadership’ and ‘collaborative work’ amongst other things. These awards are a true testament to the hard work that is put in by the students and the enthusiasm and support that they offer to each other.

We have had another record breaking year for university applications. We had an encouraging rise last year, and this year it has leapt up even further: we now have 55 applications in before the first deadline – clearly beating last 2013’s total for the whole year (38). It is not over yet! There is a second deadline for art and design applications, which is 24th March 2014, and universities still have discretion to accept applications for all courses if they wish. If you want to complete or even start a UCAS application please see Mr Souter.

VIVO stars As you can see from the ‘Top 10 in Year 11’ chart for Vivos (below), we have some clear shining stars. The Year 11 team would particularly like to congratulate Brodie Cowdry on his excellent transformation last term. Brodie was the overall winner for the ‘Best improved behaviour in 2013’; he has been working very closely with the Behaviour4Learning team and this had a huge impact. Brodie was awarded £25 of a voucher of his choice in our last assembly before Christmas. It is also important to mention that Paige Knibb was a very close second place – I look forward to seeing Paige continue to work well this term. Perhaps she will be the next person to win this award at Easter? Mrs Starmer and Mrs Barry Year 11 Achievement Directors

Last week saw the opening of the new sixth form building. It is located on the East side of the school. This will help our Head Boy and Girl to be about a lot more. Furthermore, we are holding interviews for new Prefects. They will be questioned about their suitability for their role and will have to carry out a group task. Hopefully by the end of this half-term we should have the new Prefects trained and ready to begin work around the Academy. On Wednesday 15th there was a discipline panel that was highly praised by a member of staff. A discipline panel is where you go if you have been behaving in the wrong way. You will then be questioned on your actions and be asked whether you believe that was the right thing to do. At the end of the session you will be sanctioned according to your behaviour. The Prefects have been very effective at dealing with student behaviour in a positive way. Benjamin Rockell Prefect Post Editor

Students on Cohort 2 of the ‘Infinity Academy’ got off to a great start today! Pupils from Year 7 & 8 set a high standard completing digital autobiographies on their iPads and participating with real energy in their sports double club!

What’s going on @ CCA?

We had a very successful B4L Champion workshop on Tuesday 14th January. The students have come up with great ways to support positive B4L in their lessons, reinforcing positive Discipline with Dignity. More information about their exciting plans coming soon!

The Infinity Academy is CCA’s extracurricular study centre where a selection of high achievers in literacy really do get a chance to extend and challenge their abilities. There was a real buzz amongst those invited and, as they considered and shared their personal future aspirations, it became clear that the group has a lot to offer. We look forward to challenging you and developing your skills in the 15 weeks we have together. Watch this space!

Year 11 Child Development and Health and Social Care We would like to congratulate all the students that are working hard in their Child Development and Health and Social Care lessons. Some students have some ends to tie up with their coursework as incomplete coursework automatically gets lower grades. As a department Miss Barton and Ms Lewis are now offering a club every day after school in room 105, we hope you can attend. All year 11 coursework will be marked and sent off to the moderator before February half term so make the most of after school clubs to improve your grade. This could allow 20 more hours on top of your allocation which could help improve your grade! There will be rewards for those students that do turn up. Year 10 Child Development and Health and Social Care The coursework catch-up is every day from 2.45 – 3.45 p.m. in room 105, please feel free to come along. Mrs Lewis: Health and Social Care

Keep Active @ CCA You may remember that last year saw the launch of the North Essex Girls Cricket Academy in association with Essex Cricket. This week was their first match against Hall Mead and they successfully made it through to the semi-finals which will take place in March. A huge congratulations to the following girls; Saffron Heffer, Kiera Boyce, Lorna Sharpe, Chloe O’Reilly, Mia Fowler, Kasia Bates-Cutts, Lauren Gunkel, Chloe Ranson and Katie Black!

At Crazy-For-Reading Clacton Coastal Academy we use a programme by Renaissance Learning called Accelerated Reader to promote a love for reading. Our classes are crazy about it and they all aim for the status of MODEL CLASS CERTIFICATION. The only way to achieve such an honour is to match the criteria which is based over a 12 week period. Criteria: Students sit a reading test to access their reading ability, they must read at this level or above. The classes must achieve an average of 20 minutes independent reading per day. 90% of the pupils must achieve 85% or over on their book based comprehension quizzes. Two classes from ‘Epic Year Eight’ (8C3 and 8O2) have already achieved this in the first 12 weeks! In fact this is the second year C3 have been honoured with this award! Confirmation has also just been received that 8C3 have made MASTER CLASS, 8C3 is the first class in the country to be awarded this certification! The challenge is on, can 802 also achieve this honour? Can any other classes beat 8C3?
