Councillor Jon Hartley - Dulwich Hill Labour Councillor | jon.hartley@southwark.gov.uk

Dawson’s Heights @50

It’s been fifty years since Kate Macintosh’s “interlocking ziggurats” became such an important local landmark. Dawson’s Heights estate was designed to maximise its incredible views of South London and has, over the last half century, become a key part our local skyline. But Ladlands and Bredinghurst were designed first with residents’ enjoyment in mind. So, it’s great that local residents have celebrated the iconic estate’s milestone year in style this August with a successful family fun day including farm animals and zorb racing!

Bus Campaign Continues

Local people have responded strongly to our campaign against the proposed bus service cuts. Particular concerns for the Dulwich Hill area have included the lack of other transport options (no tube or overground alternatives), the lack of step free access to any Dulwich area station for anyone with mobility issues and the heritage and cultural impact of the loss of the number 12. It was standing room only at recent public meetings of the Save Our Buses campaign. Together with local transport unions and our London Assembly member, Marina Ahmad, local councillors are determined to harness the strength of local support on this issue. Whilst TFL have now closed their official public consultation, we will keep up the pressure to save our bus routes. You can read Southwark Councils response by searching ‘buses in Southwark’ on the Council website.

Local Policing

In-person Ward Panel meetings with the Dulwich Hill policing team are back after the pandemic. While overall crime figures remain low in SE22, there are growing concerns about robberies, anti-social behaviour and other issues. With massive shortages of trained police officers in the Met and soaring inflation, there is real concern about the impact on the community if local teams are understaffed. In more positive news a new unit has been established to tackle the recent spate of robberies in Southwark.

Cost of Living

The Cost of Living crisis continues to hit local people who are struggling to make ends meet. Having helped residents through the pandemic, Southwark Council has taken steps to reduce the local cost of living such as providing free school meals throughout the school holidays, providing direct support for low-income households with energy bills through the Southwark Energy Saver’s Service and distributing the energy rebate. But with inflation hitting levels not seen for the last 40 years we know there will be more help needed. Jon Hartley
