USING RECLAIMED AND RECYCLED FURNITURE
From a mid-century daybed to an upcycled vintage suitcase coffee table, reclaimed and recycled furniture and accessories are a big hit in the right place. There are lots of positives to using reclamation - less landfill, preventing the harvesting of new trees as well as avoiding the use of environmental hazards to manufacture new products. Another is your neighbour/friend/ sister-in-law can’t pop out and pick one up. If you’re concerned about the ecological values of using old furniture and accessories, try the reclaimed and salvage yards as generally these items come right from where they were found to where you’re going to use it and aren’t altered in any way. An old church bench, a wrought iron gate or a Tudor stone fireplace will be exactly that in your home. Recycling something gives you the chance to put your own stamp on it (or somebody with amazing skill and style has already done it) and you have an item perfect for you. Rather than wander aimlessly around salvage fairs, think about what you need. Reclaimed shelves, picture frames, fireplace lintels are easy pick ups but how about a curved sofa or a kitchen island? You can ask the traders who may be able to point you in the right direction for your treasure. Think about how you can create something and look beyond the current condition. A vintage tennis racket could be made into a mirror or a tatty lamp could be transformed with a different shade and a lick of paint. OK I said about wandering aimlessly but sometimes you just see something and fall in love, if it grabs your heart I’m afraid, for me anyway, it grabs my purse. A rug could be a wall hanging, a boat’s steering oar could be a shelf, how about a gorgeous wooden door as a bed head? Your imagination can make anything you like from something you’re drawn to, it’s whether your own skills are enough to create it or if you’ll need some help. Take a trip to a salvage yard and go for it. Let me know if you need any help.
