October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. For far too many, while the month can and does raise awareness to the plight of Domestic Violence Victims near and far, countless women, men, and children continue to suffer – in silence. I was a victim. I am a SURVIVOR! I wear a physical “Battle-Scar” from my abuser today that I am NOT ashamed of simply because I have been blessed to live to tell my story of abuse with my head held high and shameless. It wasn’t always that way. For over 15 years, I hid my story in shame. My heart was heavy. Certain sounds would bring back the memories of the abuse. I later learned I was suffering from the effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Since telling my story some three years ago, I have been FREED from the torment that would go in in my mind. It’s Not Your Fault. Victims do not make the choice to become victims. It’s okay to ask for help. The Battle-Scar Free Movement is intended to KEEP the focus on the victims AND survivors all year around. Come November 1st and moving forward every single day of every year, we MUST continue to work together to effect change in others’ lives – as well as our own. Let us ALL be a Trumpet for Change! Let us ALL sound the alarm and be “THAT VOICE” for those who feel they have none! Let us ALL work together to ensure NO MORE LIVES are lost due to acts of Domestic Violence!
