Essential Oils – The Basics What is an Essential Oil? An essential oil is a liquid extracted from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, or other elements of a plant. This liquid contains the essence of the plant it comes from, hence the term “essential oil. Plants produce essential oils for a variety of reasons, such as, to serve as defence compounds against insects and other animals and protect the plant by their antifungal and antibacterial nature. The essential oils of plants are very similar to that of our blood and when introduced into our bodies, they offer properties that help support a healthy immune system, detoxify our bodies, and help us stay calm and balanced. They are a natural first aid that can help with common family health concerns, and can be a very effective first line of defence. How Do Essential Oils Work? Essential oils can be inhaled, either directly or through the use of a diffuser which disperses the oil molecules into the air, or topically.

Molecules inhaled, through the nose or mouth, are carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system allowing them to affect the body through several systems and pathways. These molecules also interact with olfactory organs and affect the brain through several receptor

sites, including the limbic system. The limbic system is directly connected to those parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. When essential oils are applied topically to the skin, their healing components are absorbed into the bloodstream by the pores and hair follicles. Once inside the bloodstream, they disperse to the specific organs and systems on which they work. Did You Know? Aromatherapy has been used for over 6000 years! Pure essential oils will not freeze, and they do not expire! One drop of peppermint essential oil is equivalent to 28 cups of peppermint tea. There is no such thing as vanilla pure essential oil. Vanilla is a pod or bean, and there is no possible way of retrieving it without adding other materials such as alcohol. You can obtain vanilla alcohol or vanilla bean powder, but not vanilla essential oil. Young Living’s Thieves essential oil blend was created based on the historical account of four thieves in France who protected themselves from the Black Plague with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing victims of the killer disease. When captured, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret recipe. To learn more about the benefits of essential oils, please contact me today!
