I’m feeling full of the joys of spring! Work on the Corn Hall renovations has started in earnest (do keep an eye on the hoarding outside for regular updates about what’s going on inside), numbers at our On Tour events keep getting better and better, and the line-up in store for April to June is simply bursting with delights to keep you entertained throughout the season. In April, we’re delighted to be paying a visit to our friends at Wingfield Barns with Martin Newell & The Hosepipe Band – surely a very special evening of poetry and music. We have more outstanding music in June when Luke Concannon – one half of the million-selling duo Nizlopi – will be performing his passionate and uplifting songs. I get excited about all the things we have in our programme but I have to confess that I can’t wait to see the fantastic Victorian magic duo Morgan & West in May. Whether you’re a child, or just want to rediscover the childish wonder that a great magic show can put you back in touch with, you won’t want to miss this. Theatre is always an important part of what we present, and this season is no exception. In particular, we’re delighted to include performances of new plays from two of our local companies, Eastern Angles’, Somewhere in England and Stuff of Dreams’ Forgotten. With Oscar madness upon us, many of the best films of the year are now available for us to screen. So for all of you who have been asking us about Spectre, The Lady in the Van, Brooklyn, Carol, The Danish Girl and Bridge of Spies – we have them all, and more!

Plus there’s Comedy, Workshops, a Speakeasy Cocktail Party and a whole day of things cycling. No excuse then not to come for a spin.

Forgotten A new play by Ray Rumsby A dramatic and haunting play based on the life of George Crabbe, East Anglia’s greatest poet, and the writing of his timeless work, Peter Grimes. Crabbe’s story captures 18th century life in all its colour and drama. Born in Aldeburgh, he was a victim of social prejudice in his youth and experienced extremes of unhappiness in his marriage. His powerful poetry shocked the rich with its scenes of rural poverty, but has made him one of our most enduring poets.

(15)
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, USA, 2015, 156 mins With Leonardo DiCaprio, Domhall Gleeson With two Golden Globe wins and nominated for 12 Oscars and eight BAFTAs, this is the film of the moment. On the surface it is a deceptively simple story, set in the 1820s, of a frontiersman on a fur trading expedition fighting for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead, but it is much more than that. The gorgeous, naturally-lit cinematography, dynamic directing, and a visceral central performance from Leonardo DiCaprio make The Revenant a haunting and memorable experience.
