Entertainment on your doorstep
It’s the holiday season, so with that in mind our summer programme is packed with enjoyable activities and entertainment. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel has been the film hit of the year and the Corn Hall is proud to offer an exclusive. Deborah Moggach, on whose novel the film was based, and whose work also includes Tulip Fever and the screenplay for Pride and Prejudice, will introduce our screening with a talk. An equally famous hotel is at the centre of The Seagull Rep’s staging of the classic BBC tv sitcom, Fawlty Towers – complete with car! One of the most satisfying parts of the Corn Hall success story has been the growing popularity of our workshops – events in which experts in their field bring out the talents of local enthusiasts, young and old. During August, we have three art workshops: Making an Artist Book with Diane Griffiths; Justin Partyka returns with new course, Exploring the Landscape – The Art of Photography and Walking, and Teri Lockton is back too with her popular Stained Glass course. As always, we’ve a wide range of outstanding music including: The Pure Floyd Show, back by popular demand; a harp recital by talented young musician Mary-Anne Barclay; the exciting and theatrical musical fusion that is Jools on Wheels; brilliant acoustic blues from guitarist Steven Finn and a performance of the new choral composition, Translated by Reeds, inspired by the local landscape. We have developed something of a reputation for presenting events which give an insight into other places and cultures – in the past we’ve had Bhangra dancers, Tibetan monks from Tashi Lhunpo, the classical Indian musician Ameen Ali Khan to name just a few. In July, we have another such treat for all the family. Very rarely seen outside of Senegal, Lions of Africa will present an enthralling ritual involving extraordinary dance, acrobatics, drumming, makeup and costumes. From a rundown hotel in India to a lion-taming dance from Senegal, the world is on your doorstep at Diss Corn Hall – enjoy!

Directed by Phyllida Lloyd, screenplay by Abi Morgan, 2011 UK, 105 minutes With Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Richard E Grant
– Full Circle A return to the original place, source, or state through a cycle of developments. – Usually used in the phrase ‘to come full circle’. ‘Full Circle’ is an exciting contemporary art exhibition comprising of a series of specifically made works by six well-established East Anglian artists. Each artist has responded to ‘Full Circle’ in a significant way to examine unexpected connections and resonances. Ideas and experiences have been rediscovered with radically new outcomes and responses. From the ‘Quirky Nature of Quercus Robur’ to the fragility and strength of the human body, this exhibition explores an intriguing range of ideas in paint, textiles and mixed-media. Evening viewing Wednesday 4 July 6-7.45pm Come and meet the artists in person. Join us after for our screening of The Iron Lady (see right).

Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia) courted controversy by making Margaret Thatcher an elderly widow, looking back over her career from political awakening in Blitz-torn Britain to her reign as prime minister in the 1980s. Meryl Streep is simply brilliant as Thatcher: her voice, her facial expressions, and her imperiousness – a performance worthy of her Oscar. Even the hint of American outsider reflects Thatcher’s role as an intruder into the clubby man’s world of Westminster. Jim Broadbent supports in every way as Dennis; Olivia Colman and Richard E Grant are excellent as her daughter Carol and Michael Heseltine.

Rarely seen outside of Senegal, this spectacle involves stunning dance moves, acrobatics, extraordinary makeup and costumes, and some of the most powerful drumming to come out of Africa.
A high-energy eight piece tribute to the music of the legendary Pink Floyd. Faithful to the spirit of the original band but adding their own touches of energy and fun, The Pure Floyd Show includes all the favourite tracks from the psychedelic 60s through to Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall and Division Bell, as well as Brick in the Wall, Comfortably Numb, Money and many more.

Reinterpreted by the famous master drummer Modou Diouf and his fellow artists, the ‘Lion Dance’ is an enthralling ritual built around an ancient Senegalese tradition known as ‘Simb’ which has been handed down through generations of storytellers. La Regle de Jeu
(PG) – subtitled
Directed by Jean Renoir, 1939, France, 106 minutes With Nora Gregor, Paulette Dubost, Marcel Dalio Never out of the critics’ top ten films of all time, this brilliant social comedy went down very badly on release and was banned by the French government as demoralising and unpatriotic. As in La Grande Illusion two years earlier, Renoir uses the particular – in this case a house party – as ironic comment on French society, again on the eve of disaster. So the farcical romantic intrigues disguise what the director called a war film that doesn’t mention war. Renoir appears memorably in it, and the film is suffused with his unique generosity of spirit. 5

Directed by James Bobin, 2011, USA, 103 minutes With Amy Adams, Jason Segel, Chris Cooper An evil oilman wants to demolish the Muppet Theatre. Its original stars are scattered – Kermit to his Hollywood mansion, Miss Piggy to Paris Vogue, Animal to anger management therapy, Fozzie Bear to a tribute band... There’s only one thing for it: they’ve got to get the old gang back together. The result is a film bursting at the seams with sheer, unadulterated joy. Watch it, and the world seems just that little bit brighter. 6

Directed by Aki Kaurismaki, 2011, France, 93 minutes With André Wilms, Blondin Miguel, Jean-Pierre Darroussin Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki’s Le Havre is as offbeat and warm-hearted as the rest of his films. Marcel Marx (André Wilms), a shoe-shiner plying his trade in the street, comes across a young illegal immigrant on the run (Miguel). He hides him from the authorities, standing up to officialdom in the guise of Inspector Monet (Darrousin). – Songs from the Shows
South Norfolk Youth Symphonic Band is a mixed ability band, currently with over 100 members aged between eight and 23. Formed by Mike Booty – still Chairman and Musical Director – in 1974, the band has raised many thousands of pounds for charities and gives around 30 concerts each year. This concert sees the welcome return of guest vocalist Jayne May-Sysum. www.snysb.org.uk 18
Directed by Vincente Minnelli, music by Gershwin, 1951 USA, 113 minutes With Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, Oscar Levant A much-loved, classic Hollywood musical appears fresh as Technicolor paint in a gorgeous restoration. Gene Kelly is the ex-GI who wants to be an artist in a Paris reminiscent of Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec; Leslie Caron provides the main love interest and some of the wonderful dancing. Six Oscars, including best picture, best screenplay (Alan Jay Lerner) and best music (the pick of George and Ira Gershwin’s back catalogue… Nice work if you can get it, I got rhythm…). Oscar Levant is funny as Kelly’s sardonic friend, Nina Foch deliciously ironic as the elegant femme fatale.

The Keeper’s Daughter presents
Hound of the Baskervilles The Keeper’s Daughter company is back, applying anarchic wit and sublime physicality to Sherlock Holmes’ most treacherous adventure. Holmes sends Watson to Devon to investigate the truth behind the mythical black dog that haunts the Baskerville family line; a journey that leads the pondering pair to suspect the supernatural, negotiate the wilds of nature and ultimately to uncover the reality of betrayal and devilish murder. Told at lightening pace, the three actors bring a family friendly and fun perspective to this classic piece of literature. Suitable for ages 7+. www.thekeepersdaughter.org.uk
