Thank you to the many who have responded so positively to our Corn Hall and Heritage Triangle fundraising campaign. What has been especially heartwarming is the extraordinary notes of support and encouragement that have accompanied your donations, saying what a difference the Corn Hall has made to your lives. We’re well on the way to reaching our fundraising target of £100,000 but, if you have been thinking of donating and haven’t done so yet, we still urgently need your help! We now have our Heritage Triangle website up and running, so to find out more about the project, keep up with all the latest news and to download the donation form, go to www.heritagetriangle.co.uk. Every contribution, large or small, will make a difference. We may have been busy fundraising and putting the project bid together but we haven’t stopped working to bring you yet more great entertainment. We’re thrilled that we are now able to show worldclass productions from top venues, live via satellite. Thanks to the clever technology involved, it’s been described as ‘having the best seat in the house but at a fraction of the cost’. This quarter features two of the very best known operas from Glyndebourne, Don Giovanni and La traviata, from the National Theatre we have Medea, and the Monty Python team’s final reunion will be live from the O2 in London. In August, our popular Art Workshops return with Printing, Life Drawing, Making Sketchbooks and Photography. Give yourself a treat. Improve your knowledge and skills from experienced practitioners. The season is also jam-packed with music of every variety. We have tributes to two of the greats – Neil Diamond and Dolly Parton, an evening of outstanding drumming, dancing and singing from the Kakasitsi Royal Drummers of Ghana, plus concerts from 60s pop sensations The Honeycombs, the brilliant Anna Mudeka Band, the fabulous Budapest Café Orchestra and Sam Sweeney’s Fiddle: Made in the Great War, a memorable and unique event featuring top folk musicians Sam Sweeney, Paul Sartin and Rob Harbron, with the award-winning storyteller Hugh Lupton. And, if great film, theatre, art, poetry, comedy and family entertainment are what you’re looking for, we have plenty of that in store throughout the summer too!

The Invisible Woman

(12A)

Directed by Ralph Fiennes, 2014, UK, 111 mins With Ralph Fiennes, Kristin Scott Thomas, Felicity Jones, Tom Hollander Ralph Fiennes follows up his directorial debut, Coriolanus, with this engrossing drama about Charles Dickens. Fiennes stars, with Scott Thomas as the mother of the author’s long-term mistress (Felicity Jones, who is excellent). Abi Morgan adapted Claire Tomalin’s pioneering biography as a basis for an intimate, intelligent examination of the complex, egotistical celebrity novelist and the three invisible women in his life. The period detail is acute and telling.

Mary Shelley and the Curse of Frankenstein The extraordinary myth of Frankenstein is related by Mary Shelley herself as she traces the journey of her own life, and tries to come to terms with her personal creative struggle, her grief for those she has loved and lost, and her craving for recognition and respectability. Set against a new world of scientific discovery, this play with music is about innocence and rejection, love and revenge. ‘An unforgettable theatrical experience’ East Anglian Daily Times on The Fisherman & the Turtle 4

This night of sixties nostalgia will feature their worldwide hits like That’s the Way and Something Better Beginning, classic sixties covers, plus of course, the group’s foot-stomping debut single. Don Giovanni

– Captured Live

By Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Compulsive philandering is one thing, but brutal rape and murder are quite another. As an unrepentant Don Juan continues to elude his earthly pursuers, other-worldly powers are forced to intervene, leading to a fire-and-brimstone climax that ranks among Mozart’s most earth-shattering achievements. A screening of Glyndebourne’s highly acclaimed 2010 production. You may bring your own interval picnic if you wish but we’d ask you to patronise our bar. Alongside our usual drinks menu we will be selling glasses of fizz and strawberries & cream. glyndebourne.com

Her

(15)

Directed by Spike Jonze, 2013, USA, 126 mins With Joaquin Phoenix, Amy Adams, Scarlett Johansson A lonely introvert (Phoenix) falls in love with the voice of his computer operating system (Johansson). So far, so science fiction. But the director of Being John Malkovich and Adaptation has much more to offer with his Oscar-winning screenplay and witty direction, as the online relationship undermines our hero’s everyday life. Los Angeles in the near-future is evoked through stunning visuals; the melancholy romance has plenty to say about the future of love in an era of artificial intelligence. 5

The Grand Budapest Hotel

(15)

Directed by Wes Anderson, 2014, USA, 100 mins With Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Jude Law, Tony Revolori, Willem Dafoe Anderson follows up his exquisite Moonrise Kingdom with another closely-choreographed confection. But this time the result is great screen comedy – thanks not least to Ralph Fiennes as the wily concierge whose pursuit of wealth despite great danger is the spine of the farce. Star cameos (Harvey Keitel, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Murray etc) spice the action as the satirical set pieces open and close like clockwork.

Bérénice Bejo (star of The Artist and outstanding here) and Tahar Rahim are the troubled couple at the heart of a challenging, intimate drama set in Paris. Both are encumbered by other partners; there are crosscurrents of reproach and guilt. Sombre, yes, but an exhilarating emotional whodunnit as well.

Under the Skin (15) Directed by Jonathan Glazer, 2013, UK, 108 mins With Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy McWilliams, Lynsey Taylor Mackay She is an alien seductress touring Scotland in a white Transit van: hitchhikers become victims of her mysterious need for bodies. But this is no crude shocker: some of Scarlett Johansson’s vivid encounters are unscripted, with nonactors; this bold, mesmerising film has an almost documentary feel; there is even wry humour. Jonathan Glazer has been working to adapt Michel Faber’s novel since he finished Sexy Beast in 2001 – it’s been worth the wait.

The images on paper and fabric, as well as framed work and in book form, prove the liveliness and range of printmaking techniques. They explore colour, form, texture and often play with the overlaying of images or juxtaposition with text. www.annetterolston.com www.inprintartsandpoetry.co.uk Evening viewing Wednesday 13 August 6.30-7.45pm Meet the artists.

Lift to the Scaffold

(12A)

Directed by Louis Malle, 1958, France, 93 mins With Jeanne Moreau, Maurice Ronet, Yori Bertin, George Pujouly A quintessential film noir which came at the start of the new wave in French cinema: influenced by Hollywood (in this case Double Indemnity), strong narrative (a criminal plot goes badly wrong) and moody black and white photography. Add an enticingly improvised Miles Davis score and stylish direction – and the supremely watchable Moreau launching her career. Recently re-released to great acclaim, this is a rare treat.

Film Wednesday 20 August 8pm Tickets £5 / Under 18s £2.50

The Double

(15)

Directed by Richard Ayoade, 2014, UK, 93 mins With Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris Morris, Sally Hawkins After the offbeat success of Submarine, Richard Ayoade of The IT Crowd tackles Dostoevsky, turning his novella into a black comedy. The premise is simple: a nerdy clerk’s despair deepens when his confident exact double joins the firm (both played by Eisenberg – of course). As paranoia sets in, the new arrival absurdly tries to help him get the girl he is too shy to woo. Quick-witted, elegant, funny and unsettling.

Her memoir of the trek has been turned into an engrossing, intimate exploration of the stunningly scenic outback, starring Mia Wasikowska. Gary Breeze

The Anna Mudeka Band

From a small workshop in the centre of Diss, Gary Breeze has established an international reputation as a lettering sculptor, exhibiting widely and winning numerous public and private commissions over 20 years. Major commissions have included the Princess of Wales memorial at Althorp, a fountain in cast lead for the cloister at Christ Church, Oxford. Other work can be found at the Imperial War Museum, Westminster Abbey, Chatsworth House and the V&A. Gary’s work also features on a series of postage stamps commemorating the First World War, issued this year.

A five-piece band playing a fusion of styles, The Anna Mudeka Band is rocky, funky reggae and African all at the same time. Their sound is simply known as ‘sunshine music’ by their followers. Lead by the extraordinary Anna Mudeka – Zimbabwean-born singer, dancer and Mbira player – their refreshing and original sound and driving drum beat, makes this band one of the best on the world music scene.

‘…Breeze works as an ethnographer as much as a carver… His work is immersed in the particularities of words and voice and culture. He restores language to us through his lettering.’ Edmund de Waal

20 Feet from Stardom

(12A)

Directed by Morgan Neville, 2013, USA, 91 mins With Darlene Love, Gloria Jones, Lou Adler, Claudia Lennear The Oscar-winning documentary about the unsung heroes of popular music – the singers who are (usually) content just to support. This affectionate film glows with life, music and energy as backing singers – and stars like Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen – talk about their work. It’s a great story, with plenty of archive footage, which also asks questions about fame and gender. Fifty years of music – from Ray Charles to Bruce Springsteen and plenty in between.

Medea

By Euripides Helen McCrory (The Last of the Haussmans) returns to the National Theatre to take the title role in Euripides’ powerful tragedy, in a new version by Ben Power, directed by Carrie Cracknell. Medea is a wife and a mother. For the sake of her husband, Jason, she’s left her home and borne two sons in exile. But when he abandons his family for a new life, Medea faces banishment and separation from her children. Cornered, she begs for one day’s grace. It’s time enough. She exacts an appalling revenge and destroys everything she holds dear. 15

From impassioned Hungarian Czardas and tender Russian folk melodies to rollicking Moldavian dances and bittersweet Jewish laments. ‘…the fiery vivacity and aweinspiring musicianship of the finest purveyors of Eastern European gypsy music... will leave you with a grin on your face and rhythm in your feet…’ Times ‘Joining the Ukelele Orchestra of Great Britain stands the Budapest Cafe Orchestra, hugely entertaining, immense skill and profound musicianship.’ Reading Chronicle www.budapestcafeorchestra.co.uk

This time Gleeson is a priest threatened in the confession box with savage revenge for the sins of the church. He is a good man already beset with scorn from pub landlord, doctor and banker, and with a troubled daughter. How should he tackle the threat to his life? Locke

(15)

Directed by Steven Knight, 2013, UK, 85 mins With Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson The critical acclaim awarded this film might seem surprising. There is just one location and one character on screen – Ivan Locke, a construction foreman driving to London. The rest are voices on his mobile phone. The way he deals with the personal and professional problems that develop reveal a man whose need to control is threatened. Why is this so compelling? Tom Hardy’s superbly understated performance certainly, but also Steven Knight’s masterful script and tight direction.
