SPATIAL PALINSESTO Urban regeneration project for the “Scalo di Porta Romana”. A “Palinsesto” as a process for the construction of new experimental residences for the Winter Olympics in Milan-Cortina 2026.

FINAL THESIS PROJECT

Milan has won the chance to host the 2026 Winter Olympic games. For this event, Milan has decided to build the new Olympic Village in a forgotten space left by the old Porta Romana Courtyard. In this project, we propose a superstructure to held different activities having always in mind the possibility to change the use once the games are finished.

Milan is one of the largest cities in Italy and is constantly growing and developing into one of the most competitive cities in Europe. But to achieve this long-term goal, it is important to confabulate about its development plans. Reading about the city’s infrastructural, morphological and ecological systems, we came across several hurdles that the city has fought to overcome; one such hurdle is the abandoned Railyard of Porta Romana. This 1,300,000 m2 area looks like a huge urban void, which is not only responsible for a disconnect in the built environment, but also affects the social and cultural fabric of the city.

Manifesto

Masterplan

The city of Milan has been trying for several years to re-qualify this area without success. The 2026 Olympic Games in Cortina-Milano and the resulting PGT for Milan in 2030 are the right occasion to reflect on the future of Milan and form the basis for the intervention of a new project. The Olympic Committee has already defined this intervention as a project that is both ecologically and economically sustainable, taking into account the current issue of climate change.

To further deepen our knowledge of the site, a thorough study was carried out, reading every defining element or pattern in and around the site and the city, leaving no stone unturned. The railway line, the urban void, the decaying ecological systems of Milan, the proximity to Agricultural Park in the south and, last but not least, the strict delimitation of the site, which makes it impossible to freely enter the area, were some of the basic factors taken into account in the development of the strategy. The urban planning vision for the landmark was to integrate this space into the system. That is why we decided to create several green corridors that would connect Milan’s existing ecological systems into a single system and then connect them further to the agricultural fields and finally to the whole of Lombardy. At the urban level, green avenues have been traced, while at the regional level the railway line is proposed as a green corridor

that connects not only the site with the city, but also the city with the region. As for the architectural project, the strategy was simple: each designed element is a direct response to the context. A harmonious dialog with the existing building environment was therefore created. Concepts such as “Megaspacestrucres were studied and exploited, and since the proposed structure is a metamorphic structure, we incorporated modern building techniques of prefabrication and modularity to make this vision a reality. Overall, we envision this project as a work of art that has many levels of meaning, style types, etc., that build on each other and reveal a palimpsest of historical changes that meet all the needs of the city in the present and future.

The project wants to give back the neighborhood feel to Chapinero. It is a consolidated area in the city in which different heritage buildings, along with commercial ones create a vibrant atmosphere. The aim is to provide quality public spaces in which different day by day dynamics can take place.

26

Placement of Built and Open Spaces

The project aims to create a first public floor full of transitions. Make the user walk through spaces, reaching the main courtyards without feeling changes between an inside or an outside. Over this public space, there are three housing blocks and the library, which is the project`s main building. There is a patio, where there is a green area surrounded by commercial activities (CafĂŠ, Supermarket and a Gallery). Juxtaposed to this, on a higher level, there is a terrace

overlooking the Cerros Orientales, accompanied by the Library and the Supermarket. The second patio is for contemplation and serves as the entrance of the library. In order to have activities, there are two restaurants that are thought to have a nightlife. The third main space is a park surrounded by a patrimonial house, to which a new cultural building is attached.

The limit defines where something ends and something starts. It is able to link two elements of different characteristics and make that transition more subtle and natural. Is a term that denotes a spatial world, refers to a place that allows articulating the outside and the inside. A mediator of space and time tensions, where different realities converge. It is a mistake to understand the limit as a linear barrier that fractures two spaces, this should be understood as the place where it is not defined an inside or outside. It is then the space to create encounters and permanences. An intermediate space, crucial and necessary.

29

Library View

To carry out a project that has the limit as its principle, the horizontal should be extended and brought closer and closer. Create transparencies that link spaces and shadows that denote transitions. Create an in-between space capable of being the organizing void from which every path of the project begins and ends. The void capable of establishing a close relationship with the secondary activities that surround.

Near Porta Ticinese, a series of communal living projects were built during the 1800s. These used the Casa a ringuera system, in which the circulation systems were made by walkways that looked over the communal courtyard. Each unit had two rooms and the bathrooms were shared.

C O U R T YA R D The aim of the exercise was to provide a form of coliving spaces that could create different ways of socializing and living in community. The structure of the building consisting of structural walls made the project very compartmented. Therefore, the proposal sets a different type of circulation system, in which

new staircases were added and a unit consists of different single private modules and communal spaces. New volumes were added to the facade in order to provide bigger socializing areas.

EDIFICIO SOCIEDAD DE AGRICULTORES

UNIDAD INTERMEDIA INTERVENCION J U LY

2 0 1 5

The Sociedad de agricultores building is located in the historical 10th street in Bogotรก. It was designed by the architect Manuel de Vengoechea in 1948. It is located in an L-shaped corner plot of land. The class consisted of a series interventions in the building; the door, the garden, the stairs and first floor. This excercises lead to you to experiment to improve its dynamics with the streetwalkers.

38 The door is conceived as a hermetic box embedded within the volume of the building and shows no trace of its presence. The door is not only understood as a piece that delimits the interior of the exterior but at the same time is an element capable of creating and connecting the voids. In this way, opening the door becomes a ritual in which the limits of space are established, and a direct relationship is created between the city, the building and the center of the block.

Door Opening and Closing Movement

Moving Panels Section

In this exercise, the floor slabs are fractured and folded to form a discontinuous void of 3.5 meters wide. With this changes, the granite floor and beams that once were the structure, become the enclosure systems, walls or parapets of new spaces. With these creating different heights, voids and visual relationships with other spaces in the building.

Moving Panels | Isometric View

The existing staircase in the first 3 floor is eliminated and a linear path is formed from an access space and a patio located in the back of the built volume. The staircase is arranged next to the contemplation patio and through the conscious disposition of its footprints, risers, handrails, and railing, a visual and luminous game is produced within a contained atmosphere. From the fourth floor, the structure of the existing staircase is conserved and ends in an austere courtyard that emphasizes the verticality of the route and its relationship with the sky.

STAIRCASE COURTYARD

Ground Floor Plan

In order to create a garden in this exercise, we created a tall door with a linear wooden corridor, which breaks the building and creates a straight path to make space for the siete cueros tree that is then placed at the backyard of the building. The siete-cueros tree leaves its trace on the walls of the corridor and forms a violet carpet with the leaves that come off its branches: the ritual of entering the building is commemorated. The backyard is now the home of the siete-cueros tree.

First Floor Courtyard | Isonometric View

The first-floor intervention aims to extend the public space of the city to the block center that develops on the roofs of the existing buildings. The living space is the result of grouping, connecting and conserving heights and voids of these structures, and they create permanence and contemplation spaces accessible directly from the back of the buildings. Upper Floor | View

For the final exercise, we proposed to extend the building by adding a new contemporary volume that reinterprets the basic unit of the building, but that maintains the height, depth and structural modulation of what already exists. The new volume is built by attaching new basic units along the perimeter of the block, thus rescuing the condition of continuous wall-like appereance, which generates a sharp division between the city and the new apple center that takes place in the covers of existing buildings. Then we added a metallic beam over the perimeter of the block, in which took place different cultural spaces for the city.

Different excercises were developed through out the couse , always aiming an innovative and creative design that could be represented in excecutive drawings in order to understand the level of details that a project needs.

44 The project aims to create a concert stage for the LITFIBA rockband. The band wants to promote by their songs a sense of power. They want to enhance the idea of breaking the rules that society has made us believe we have to follow. Break free from the cage that steriotypes have put us in.

REDESIGNING CABINET BY ANGELO MANGIAROTTI

PROJECT OF FURNITURE DESIGN

The exercise aimed to analyze and understand the way this very famous cabinet, by Angelo Mangiarotti, was made. This very well known architect used to design different furniture and ceramic pieces besides his building projects. Based on that piece of furniture, a proposal of a different leg system was made.

48

Angelo Mangiarotti was different from the other known Modern designers of his time. He had the capacity of adapting the product to the characteristics and conditions given by the material that was going to be used. For example: when using glass, giving transparency, malleability, and flexibility. The design of objects came after the idea of prefabrication and dry assembly on architectural pieces resulting in a strong sense of industrialization. The focus always on modules and joints.

Taking the given cabinet, the idea is to make a version that can be industrialized. To do so, the piece has to be divided into smaller ones. The new design lets the customer choose whether to have a complete piece with the two modules or two separate ones. But to have the first option, the leg has to be redesign to hold the whole piece together. The designed leg in extructed aluminum has a designed form that lets you unify the two modules
