CONTRIBUTORS cecelia crimmins, co editor

Cecelia Crimmins is an obedient wingwoman, with sixteen years of prior experience being a little sister, and thus being bossed around. Between juggling school and religiously watching a variety of her TV programs, she enjoys cuddling with her pets and running into the sunset with her boyfriend Dylan Schmeding as seen in this issue’s “Teenage Dream” spread (page 61). She also modeled and helped create headpieces for the “Where the Wild Thigs Are” spread (page 19).

cory ida, photographer

Cory Ida is a photographer based in the windward side of Oahu. He runs Beanshot Productions (www.beanshot.com), drawing inspritation from the communities of Kaneohe and Kailua. His love for photograpy began with a myriad of disposable cameras. That evolved into a myriad of fancy gear which he used to photograph the “Where the Wild Things Are” spread (page 19) and the “Dirty & Beautiful” spread (page 29). He also served as the world’s greatest mentor for this magazine project.

models & artists

Throughout this magazine you will see the faces and art of truly beautiful people. The models are young women who attened Kalaheo High School. Not only are they pretty, but they’re hardcore. They trekked accross tough terrain, through bushes and over thorns, yet they still managed to rock their shoots. The artists are brave students who are willing to let us into the depths of their minds and imaginations.

Kathy Shigemura: Mrs. Shigemura is an art teacher at Kalaheo High School. She was the advisor of this project and graciously passed on her design knowledge and skills. Teresa Hanaffin-Wong: Mrs. Wong is also an art teacher at Kalaheo High School. She deserves a big thanks for her constant positivity, inspiration, encouragement and her Nikon D40 which was used to photograph the “Teenage Dream” spread. (Page 61). Jordan Lewis: Jordan Lewis sacrificed his brand new, precious MacBook Pro for the making of this magazine. Now really, how many of you could survive that separation?

ALOHA Well hello there, finally. Welcome to the year-long, highly anticipated, colossal project: Brainstorm Magazine. This publication is much more than just pretty pictures resting on glossy pages. I created Brainstorm Magazine with the intention of encouraging young women to rise from the expected conformity of society and to instead embrace their individuality. It is no secret that main stream media creates expectations for women to fit into certain molds. If we cave, the female species will eventually be turned into a gender of robots. I’m not saying that main stream media is the big, bad monster. Though it does hold massive influence over our perceptions. We’ve all felt the pressure to be society’s ideal woman at some point, even if at varying degrees. However, if we are the people that nature intended, negative messages in the media will have less power over our thoughts. So please share the idiosyncrasies that distinguish you from the next person. This magazine is the offspring of years and years of filed away thoughts, lists, ideas, ambitions, curiosities and brainstorms. These pages are filled with real girls, real artwork and real voices. There’s a little bit of something for everyone. I’m not trying to tell you what to wear, where to shop, or what you should be listening to. Think your own thoughts and be your own person. If you want some ideas, let me help you brainstorm...

LOVE, editor in chief ANGELICA CRIMMINS

LITTLE SECRETS [things to do, places to see] You’ve seen this place with the corner of your eye. It’s that hole in the wall Italian restauraunt usually eclipsed by it’s more popular, yet inferior, next door neighbor, Boston’s Pizza. Yeah, I just said inferior. Peppino’s is not a pizza joint. It’s a 45 year-old family owned and operated dining room. The chipped walls are devoid of decor except for a single painting. Looks will decieve you because the food is beyond exquisite. You bring your own colas and wait for what seemes like hours in the hushed dimmness. The kitchen is hidden a few feet away. Since you’re only separated by a thin curtain, the smell of your soon-to-be dinner circulates the room testing your patience. This isn’t a pseudo Italian chain restaurant. Mamma and Papá serve authentic fare.

FARMERS MARKET

If you haven’t heard by now, eating locally grown foods will help you save the world. Eating local eliminates the need for gas-guzzling transportation which helps fight against the big, bad global warming monster. Besides, you get to actually meet the farmer who births and raises your veggies with tender, loving care. Lucky for Kailua locals, there is an all local and organic market every Thursday from 5-7:30 pm in the Long’s Drugs parking lot.

behind disfunkshion magazine with public relations director tyson k joines Q: What does your job as a Public Relations Director entail? Tyson: As a public relations Director my job duties vary from day to day. A typical day involves writing proposal letters, attending meetings, training my assistant, taking care of all the Disfunkshion emails, scouting out new content for the magazine, among many other things. Q: What’s your favorite part of your job? Tyson: Seeing final print issues come out of the shipping box. That single moment validates all of the hard work and time we put into it. Q: What’s the coolest opportunity your job has presented you with? Tyson: My job has blessed me with many cool opportunities. I’m sitting here writing to you from the Grammy’s in fact!I’ve had

S 17

the opportunity to interview Oscar Winners, Grammy Winners, and attened Fashion Week, just to name a few. Q: What University did you attend and what did you study? Tyson: The University of Hawaii and I majored in Apparel and Product Merchandise. Q: What did you do post college graduation? Tyson: I dove right into freelance stylng work and independent public relations for independent clothing boutiques. Q: Did you intern anywhere? Tyson: My first internship was with Hawaii RED Magazine, another local, online fashion publication. I also went on to intern with the Huffington Post, one of the most well-known newspapers in the world.

Q: What sets Disfunkshion apart from other magazines on the market? Tyson: The quality and high standards. We have much thicker pages than most magazines do. We are the only magazine in Hawaii to feature major A-list Celebrities on our covers. Q: What advice do you have for someone interested in pursuing a career in the magazine industry? Tyson: The main advice I would give someone wanting to pursue a career in anything related to publications or the fashion industry is that you need to have extremely thick skin, somewhat of a backbone. It’s so easy to get taken advantage of and to get walked over in this industry. My other piece of advice is that you need to be an effective multitasker and communicator.S

RADAR DETECTOR:

+ If you’re into geeky dreamboats, these Columbia University graduates will make you swoon...again. contra by vampire weekend is the band’s second album following their self-titled 2008 release. Remember “Oxford Comma” and “A Punk?” Rest assured, their breezy, polo and dockers sound hasn’t changed. If that’s not your scene, don’t be fooled. They will creep into your subconscious. You won’t even realize your body responding to their subtly catchy tunes nor your inner dork emerging as you catch references to history, world cultures and poetry. But if you don’t catch on, underneath the crazy metaphors and quirky imagery they string together situations that everyone can relate to. “Diplomat’s Son” is a plot to take advantage of someone. “Giving Up the Gun” is about the passage of time. “Horchata” presents the course of love; how this wonderfully exotic realm so naturally transitions into something familiar and comforting, to something vapid and stale, though never forgotten. Let it be know, that if you listen to the music, you may feel the urge to break out in irrepressible dance. If you listen to the lyrics, they may hit a nerve. If you are curious and/or wise, you’ll want to keep an encyclopedia nearby.

Nino Rojo by Devendra Banhart will mesmerize you into a trance of melancholy and liberation. His voice is a ghost that will bewitch your entire being. It starts in your eardrums-where you first absorb the organic enchantment, then into your mind- where his bittersweet yearning seduces your innermost pathos, then this feeling trickles through your veins, devouring your whole body. Under Banhart’s spell you will want to roll around in the grass, tangling your body in weeds, enduring reality with bliss and a few tears. After connecting with life’s natural elements and the earth from which you will depart, you can finally roll over with contentment.

If you enjoy dark humour, and twisted tales of the insane, this autobiography of growing up with a mentally ill siser will satisfy. Between Lonnie’s explosion of absurdities and Lorna’s prepubescent bell jar pessimism, you will realize that we are all from the black lagoon.

This is a novel of clandestine enightenment. A concierge at an elegant hotel in Paris, who is assumed to be lonely and incompetent, is unexpectedly as intelligent as she is content. Then there is 13 year old Paloma, who is as troubled as she is intelligent. Their commentaries result in entertaining lessons on culture, society, and philosophy.

Boy rents aparment, stumbles upon an academic study written by the previous renter, who is now deceased. The study analyzes the Navidson Record, a horror documentary about a subtly haunting house that drives its inhabitants into reality-altering insanity. Boy begins to edit the study and spirals into his own insanity. Layers of happenings are told through multiple narrators who refer to both real and nonexistant sources. There are footnotes for footnotes and text is arranged eerily accross pages. Beware, this book is a trip.

As humans, the most complex of beings, we like to think that we have complete control of our thoughts, emotions, and desires. However, a ubiquitous force among our daily lives subliminally manipulates our thinking. The media takes on nu-

ern world, women are encouraged to achieve an ideal body image. Media both suggests and heightens the importance of an idealized body. This idealized body type is constantly changing. Twenty-five years ago the average super model was eight percent thinner than average women, in today’s society, models are twenty-three

of body shame and appearance anxiety differ based on levels of selfobjectificatio (characterized by the tendency to value appearance over abilities) both high and low self-objectifiers experienced increased levels of shame and anxiety. “Exposure to media-portrayed idealized images focuses attention on the body and

Not only do we turn to media for entertainment, but we turn to media for education, for advice, for confirmation. Our dependency on the media essentially surrenders power to its industries, instilling in the media authority over its audience. While the specific effects of the mass media are subject to variation, it is evident that a person’s attitudes and perception are conclusively influenced. One of the most apparent and personal effects of mass media is the influence it has over our perceptions of ourselves. In the West-

percent thinner (Derenne 1). Women are encouraged to be waifish and thin like supermodel Kate Moss, yet voluptuous in just the right areas like Jenifer Lopez and Pamela Anderson. Makeover shows like The Swan and Dr. 9021 glamorize plastic surgery and place a substantially high value on beauty rather than substance. The media pressures expectations on women and advocates conformity rather than independence. Consequently, studies show that exposure to images of idealized bodies in magazines lead to an increase of body shame and appearance anxiety (Huon 8590). Although the degree

encourages scrutiny of the acceptability of its shape and size” (Huon 86, 89). This scrutiny may drive women to eating disorders, depression, and overall body dissatisfaction (Bessenoff 240). Idealized images are an influential source of pressure to reach a certain epitome. This pressure entails both psychological and physical stresses. Mass media affects sexual awareness, beliefs and behaviors. With magazines such as Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Maxim and popular television shows like True Blood, Desperate Housewives, and Degrassi openly exhibiting sexual content, the media is an increasingly acces-

S 48

ible way for people to learn and see sexual behaviors. Almost two thirds of sixteen to seventeen year old adolescent girls learn about sexual topics like birth control, contraceptives, and pregnancy prevention from magazines (Sutton, Brown, and Klein 35, 47). Walsh-Childers found that viewers’ own expectations for using condoms was affected by depiction of condom use in soap operas. Correlational studies of the relationship between viewing sexual media and effects suggest that the media impacts its audience by reinforcing a relatively consistent set of sexual and relationship norms and rarely included sexual responsible models—like people with multiple partners and people who engaged in casual sex. (Brown 44). The media tells people what is important and how to think about issues in the world around them. Media gets people thinking and talking about specific issues; as a result, this helps viewers define what is considered appropriate and inappropriate behavior. Media brings important issues to public concern yet may influence how the public interprets the issues based on content. Media has the power to mold an audience’s perception of global issues and norms, thereby influencing and even altering cultures. Audiences often receive biased, incomplete, one-sided information on important news events. Recently, the Iranian Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance issued a media blackout for foreign journalists leaving US mainstream media outlets absent from

S 49

Iranian affairs. Still, with hindered information sources, the US media diplomats tried to portray a “blurry picture in Iran” (Hamedani 11). This is evident in the American bias against the Islamic Republic and our swift decision to support the accusations of election fraud between Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mahmoud Ahmadinjad in the summer of 2009. The US media was ignorant of aspects of Iranian society that influenced the election and major protests. The US repeatedly showed images of Iranian events, but provided little context. For example news stations would show violence surrounding protests with very little background information. When the US reports on world issues, media officials often take on a Western bias ignoring other perspectives and use content out of context, thus turning mainstream news into propaganda. This ignorance ultimately alters the point of view and knowledge of US viewers. In addition to cultural bias, news stations can also be politically biased. For example, FOX news is notorious for having a conservative tilt. An excessive amount of Republican staff members serve as verification. For example, the president and founder, Richard Ailes, is “one of the savviest and most pugnacious Republican political operatives in Washington, a veteran of the Nixon and Reagan campaigns” (Ackerman). Other staff members with impassioned conservative ties include daytime anchor David Asman, former rightwing of The Wall Street Journal editorial page and

the conservative Manhattan Institute; the host of Fox News Sundays Tony Snow, a conservative columnist and former chief speechwriter for the first Bush administration; Fox’s senior vice president John Moody, a longtime conservative journalist; Fox’s managing editor Brit Hume, a veteran TV journalist and contributor to the Conservative American Spectator, and the list continues. Fox’s bias not only takes the form of its employers, but also in its attacks on liberals and their ideals. As a mainstream news source for Americans, audiences automatically view Fox News as a credible source of information. However, with a distinct bias against liberals, the audience is susceptible to submerged propaganda. Media, as an important element to our culture, has the power to manipulate perception and importance. According to anthropologists, having advanced media is synonymous with having high cultural tradition and, thus, an advanced culture (McLeod 70). However, Ted Carpenter refutes that advanced media of the first world affects not only tastes and trends, but it also molds perception: “I think that media are so powerful they swallow cultures. I think of them as invisible environments which surround and destroy old environments,” (McLeod 70). This is demonstrated by the effects of television on the culture of the Alaskan Inuit. These people had no experience with automobiles, yet viewed them on the TV show Dukes of Hazard. When a

group of Inuit actually encountered a car, they jumped in through the windows dirtying the seats with the mud of their boots (McLeod 71). They justified this behavior by claiming they learned it from Bo and Duke. They accepted what was on TV as cultural norms. “Televised media, however free, provides us with a selective view of the world about what is important and unimportant, and this selectively in itself is a critical dimension of pow-

and Sonny with a Chance was recently checked into a treatment center for an alleged eating disorder and a cutting problem. Lindsey Lohan is notorious among tabloids for her partying habits, alcohol abuse, rehab stints and arrest records. Since children and teens put these stars on a pedestal, they aspire to replicate their behavior and align their tastes. They want to dress how their role models dress, talk like they talk, and behave how they

educated and constructed by media culture; thus its pedagogy if often invisible and subliminal, requiring critical approaches that make us aware of how media constructs meanings, influence and educate audiences, and impose its messages and values” (Kellner 67). Luke Rodeslier claims that students must be empowered to competently read media by learning to question the intentions and contexts of the media. Students can do this by reflecting on

when messages are distorted, it is essential that the audience views media through a critical lens. er” (McLeod 74). The media determines our worldviews for whatever our age, sex, culture, language, education, or wealth. Alarmingly, media is poisoned by negative role models for adolescents. In the US, young people spend approximately six to seven hours each day with some form of media (Derenne 3). This void of positive role models is consequently detrimental to the adolescent audiences. Adolescence is a stage of testing various roles to establish an identity. Oftentimes, children and teens look up to people in the media. However, in today’s society, the media seems to harshly highlight celebrity gossip and downfalls. The Disney Chanel stars such as Miley Cyrus of Hannah Montana and Vanessa Hudgens from High School Musical have both had incidents of inappropriate photos leaked to the internet. Demi Lovato, star of Camp Rock

behave. Based on these negative role models, adolescents’ ideals are molded harmfully. Conclusively, when messages are distorted, it is essential that the audience views media through a critical lens. If you have recently enjoyed a trip to the movie theater, you might recall seeing an advertisement in the form of a rock music video intent on recruiting members in the US Army National Guard. Obviously, the US Army was trying to target younger audience members and appeal to the service. Firstly, there is no relation between rock bands and the US National Guard. Secondly, there is nothing glamorous about pointing guns at other human beings in combat. By learning to examine the rhetoric of media messages, viewers can critically decipher the value of information to understand the central message. “One is often not aware that one is being

the medium used to convey the message, identifying the target audience, questioning the purpose of the approach, and the social climate surrounding the message (Rodeslier). Critical media literacy will ultimately provide the audience with the vital ability to distinguish hidden intentions so that they do not succumb to the stalwart influence of mass media. This will ultimately allow audiences to think their own thoughts and to be self-produced individuals.

Think about your last meal.

Do you know what kinds of chemicals were injected into that meal? How about how far each ingredient had to travel to reach your plate? What mega-corporations are on the rise with the assistance of your patronage?

These aren’t exactly questions that flood one’s mind when eating lunch. Since the Green Revolution in the 1920’s,

the world’s agricultural system shifted from sustenance crops to systemized agriculture. The goal of farming surpassed survival and focused on profit. Food was not only industrialized but globalized. Mega-corporations arose and are continually rising in power. One variety crops formed monocultures and uniformity. Science gave way to genetically modified foods to maximize production and profit. The future of our food is now at stake. As food industrialization and globalization progress, dangers will be imminent for global farmers, developing nations, the earth, and even you—the consumer.

S 53

The food system in America is skewed, allowing mega-corporations to grow in power and wealth on a global scale. Today only 3 or 4 companies control the meat and agriculture industries in America. This power is spreading over North and South America. Smithfeild hog processing plant in Tar Heel, North Carolina, home to the world’s largest slaughterhouse, actively exploits their workers with ignorance to their citizenship and health. Employees face a modern day “jungle” once revealed by Upton Sinclair. Smithfeild recruits illegal immigrants from Mexico, where US subsidies on cheap corn put 1.5 million workers out of work. Montford, a US beef company, similarly advertises job openings in Mexico, sending buses into Mexico to transport workers to America every day. Anti-immigrant police do not crack down on the companies that hire illegal immigrants, but only the illegal immigrants themselves. Immigrant agents arrest

15 workers per day at Smithfeild. Exploited workers get picked up as criminals as companies make millions of dollars. Crops in the US remain cheap because of underpaid immigrant workers and government subsidized crops. Not everywhere in the world has this assistance from the government; in Europe farmers are subsidized but in Mexico and Canada neither crops nor farmers are.

Mega-corporations are not shy about using their power and wealth in the food industry to control other farmers. 10,000 years ago, farmers began saving seeds to plant the same crops the next year. However, in this modern world corporations now own food crops. Monsanto, a chemical industry, is threatening the traditional seed saving technique as well as the existence of the traditional farmer.

In 1996 Monsanto created and patented a genetically modified a seed that would produce crops designed to survive when sprayed by Monsanto’s herbicide Round Up. There are currently over 11,000 patents owned by Monsanto. Monsanto has 75 Private Investigators roaming the country looking for farmers who save their seeds. Wheat farmer/seed developer and saver, Percy Schmesier of Canada was sued by Monsanto in 1998 when the wind took Monsanto seeds into his crops. Schmesier was found guilty by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2004 for “patent infringement” and he was consequently unable to use his own seeds that his family developed over decades. Similar cases have happened to the 9,000 farmers across North America that Monsanto has sued for seed saving. 75% of the World’s 1.4 billion farmers depend on saved seeds as their primary seed source. Monsanto’s goal is to own the marketplace by replacing it with seeds of their own. If Monsanto

S 54

continues to rise globally, they will be vested with more power to enforce their goal among other nations. In addition to the legal issues imposed on farmers by the corporate sharks of agriculture, there exists the world of contract farming. Contract farming is often used in developing nations, where smallholders produce for private corporations. These private corporations loan necessary funds to the growers, which is subtracted from the payment they receive when they sell the end product back to the corporations. In the Dominican Republic, the prices for tomatoes are controlled by the government and the corporations which means that a farmer may not receive any profit for the tomatoes he grows and is even susceptible to debt. Similarly, In Malawi the tobacco industry takes advantage of the economic dependency on tobacco, bringing wealth to themselves and not the people of Malawi. In America, farmers lose a

S 55

dollar for every bushel of corn they produce— they only survive by government subsidies. It is unavoidably evident that modern agriculture systems harm the environment. In much of the world, industrialization and globalization forces efficiency above tradition, culture, and quality. The conversion of wild lands to farmlands and pasture for

industrial agriculture results in the loss of flora and fauna. El Salvador’s forests have been completely cleared for industrial coffee farming. Native crops are threatened because of the introduction of foreign crops and the chemicals used to increase proficiency. The coffee processing plants in El Salvador release toxins such as arsenic, boron, and chloride. These toxins build up in soil,

livestock, human and ecological food chains, and urban waste disposals. In the Dominican Republic, farmers must follow a calendarbased pesticide plan rather than need-based. The Azua Valley suffered cycles of infestation of white flies because of the overuse of chemicals. Thousands of Costa Rican banana workers are directly harmed by nematicides, causing infertility. Simultaneously, cultures are being manipulated. The rise of contract farming strays from traditional farming methods and helps instigates the sky rocket in poverty of the third world, as well as immigration from native lands. Corporations and industries deliberately hide consumers from information on genetically modified foods. By genetically modifying foods, scientists invade the cells of plants and use technology to alter their DNA. Monsanto directly injects their corn with e coli bacteria and Round Up ready bacteria which causes tumors and foreign objects to accumulate in the corn. Because GM plants re-

foreign objects to accumulate in the corn. Because GM plants reproduce, the effects and future of GM plants remain an enigma. Deborah Koons Garcia, filmmaker of “The Future of Food” claims it is “the largest biological experiment humanity has ever entered.” One experiment revealed that after eating genetically altered “flavor savor” tomatoes, test rats developed lesions in their stomachs, but the tomatoes were still marketed to the public. Much of the criticisms and negative findings of GM foods has been hushed by the biotech industry. Large corpora-

tions pay millions of dollars for university research, and therefore have unofficial power over what is public domain. Large corporations that use GM foods oppose labeling laws because they want to limit liability; they want to eliminate ways to trace back health problems to their product. Mexico has already banned the planting of GM seeds to protect the genetic heritage of their corn. 200 companies in Canada signed against using GM wheat. The veil between the truth about GM foods and the public is causing strains in international relations for the US.

Biotechnology falsely claims that GM foods can help “produce food for a starving world.” While this may sound humanitarian, it’s impossible. Biotechnology does the exact opposite. Food production is not the problem; the 8 million people that starved today did so because of their lack of access to food. US farmers are paid to overproduce. These production crops are then used to undercut the markets of other countries. The capacity for the rest of the world to grow food for themselves is minimized by America’s overproduction.

large food corporations deliberately hide informtion about their products for the sake of profit.there are lots of secrets swimming around in your food. the traditional farmer is becoming a highly endangered species because of greedy, scheming mega-corporations. to avoid being lab mice, we should eat locally grown, organic foods as much as possible. unless you want a stomach full of lies and other probable foreign objects.

DECLARE: [the art of the people]

ORIGINALITY anthony vealey

A trait long lost, sadly forgotten in the lapse of time , that affects all who walk the earth. Originality was once favored, a recognized talent which is now almost nonexistant. Where it used to be that becoming an individual of your own eccentricities was enjoyed, it is now apparent that belonging takes precedence. The

era has creeped up into our laps in a most unpleasant way. Nature seeks to mirror the much sought after title and attitude of adulthood stresses excess in way of conformity rather than substance. The trends and approval of fellow peers far outweighs ambitions and personal enjoyment. What happened to being yourself? While no one is perfect, a sense of individuality used to radiate confidence,

or at least a level of respect for oneself. These things are gone like the receding tide. Although sparce, originality can still be found among the waves of youth. Poetry, music, dance, and art are just a few ways many stand out and contribute to society. For this they are applauded and, hopefully, not copied.

REALIZATION samantha angelina mulhern The waves are always crashing here. Our hearts are always beating dear. There’s always walls around mine. Because of you it’s extra this time. My mind is always running around, It’s trying to think on count. But somehow you’re always a step ahead. You’re always watching when my heart stops dead. Your words are full of lies and fear. It’s like you can’t think clear. You have an intelligent mind, but it doesn’t matter when it comes to this kind. So I’m finally pulling out. You lost a friend and a girl to think about. The waves might always crash here, But in the end our hearts won’t beat together dear.

cecelia crimmins

UNTITLED angel crimmins There were so many demons living with my blood, They knicked me at my ankles, They dragged me through the mud. I was their little experiment, They injected alchemy in my vein, That ate away my body and rewired my brain. They picked apart my being, Flesh and blood and bone, The stars lost their sparkle, I forgot they even shone. They howled outside my window, Begging for my hand, They promised me bliss and freedom In their wonderland.

cecelia crimmins

BLISS monica anna marie franco She looked at him knowing that all the odds were against her. So she sat there with a monotone voice and her head down. Slowly reality sunk into her and all she could do was lie there and watch him in his world full of bliss. Don’t give up. But if he’s not doing anything, he’s not ready for you yet. When he is, it will be too late.

That world had been so beautiful, Not only in the sense of sight, It soothed me with cold comfort But I was losing the will to fight. I was given porcelain-pure organs, and knuckles that were strawberried, I was their favorite doll to play with, In this world that I had been carried. As time came for them to put their fun to an end, They stitched me up and left me At the beginning again. Though I was back at home, Little did I know, The demons had left me with something, A yearning in my soul.

GRADUATION sam mulhern

We’ve seen our friends do it, we’ve seen it on TV shows and movies. Now it’s our turn. It’s finally the year 2011. Some of us haven’t even realized it and some of us are more aware of it than we want to, or should be. But it doesn’t matter if we realize it or not, because either way, it is coming. In a few months we’ll be the ones throwing up our caps. We’ll be the ones saying goodbye to all our friends that we in someway or another grown up with. For the first time in our lives we will literally start a new chapter. Graduation is almost here. Did you read

that? Because I can’t even believe I just wrote that. A lot of us have been counting down the days for this exact moment. We’ve been dwelling on. On the other hand, a lot of us don’t even want to think about it. And not because we don’t realize it, but because we’re scared. It does not matter which one of those you are. Either way you’re probably asking yourself why in the world I’m even mentioning this. Let me explain. You’re wither counting down the days until you’re out of “this crappy place” or you’re avoiding it altogether. Whether you want to believe it or not, time is flying by.

So why not stop for a minute and think, actually think, about this. You might hate the place you live in, you might hate your high school, but you don’t hate your friends. This is the time when you need to slow your life down. Calm down. Take a rest. Focus on the people around you. You do not have that much time left. This is the perfect moment to take a chance. To finally do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Or to try something new. Make the rest of your senior year count. Don’t move that tassle without finishing what you want to do. Graduation is coming soon. What are you going to do?
