Vision. Novella’s Second Issue. As we launch the second issue of Novella Magazine, the first word that comes to mind is Vision. It is difficult to believe that only a few months ago we were celebrating the launch of our first issue and now thanks to the inspiration from the artists and designers featured in this issue, our vision has once again been realized. The vision for our second issue was inspired by the clothing and accessories created by designers, Angela Huntington of Huntington, Janet Han of The Wild North Apparel, and Gonzalo and Miah of blanc de noir. As we celebrate this vision, we would like to thank these designers for helping us bring the issue to life. I am thankful to my team, and you the reader, for taking this journey with us.

Toronto-based designers Gonzalo and Miah, of blanc de noir, have created a highly stylized, yet minimalist collection of pieces based on inspiration from exploring various neighbourhoods in the city of Toronto. True to industrial design, the creative duo behind the line emphasizes a strong aesthetic, quality and wearability. Stingray leather, alpaca wool, and lambskin are only some of the materials used to create blanc de noir’s Toronto collection, and with pieces like the Wellesley scarf, McCaul backpack and Roncesvalles shoes, their 2015 line truly is an ode to our city. www.blancdenoir.ca

The Wild North’s stance on the urbanite’s survival guide to a frozen concrete jungle is that there is no need to sacrifice style in order to stay warm. The Canadian brand is ethically made, sourcing materials in northern communities, while keeping a utilitarian approach to their designs, with a seriously urban-feel. The Wild North’s winter collection is contemporary yet practical, making their pieces great for anything from hanging out downtown to actual activities in the snow. www.thewildnorthapparel.com

Award-winning mixed media artist, Stan Olthuis, is not just your average artist. Instead of using the typical refined paintbrush and blank white canvas, Olthuis uses unconventional art tools such as cracked wood, plywood, house paint and scrapers to create unique paintings with substance. His beautiful artwork not only captures the city’s streets filled with construction hoardings, torn posters, graffiti and boutiques that light up the night with shimmering gowns but he captures it in a mesmerizing way where the city becomes a visual masterpiece, which many of us overlook during our busy lives and hectic commutes. His first education in the arts was in Chicago at Trinity Christian College where he met one of his biggest influences in the industry, Dutch artist Henk Krijger, who Olthuis describes as a “real renaissance man”. Later he ended up in Toronto at OCAD where his passion for making art continued to flourish. Olthuis is now widely collected and so far includes Canada, USA, France, Japan and Norway. He has exhibited in numerous galleries in Toronto and is represented in Japan by Motokawa Gallery. One of his adored XO pieces, When Harry Met Sally, was awarded the 2014 Ontario Society of Artists 141st Open Juried Exhibition, ‘Game’ Curry’s Award. His current exhibition at Abbozzo Gallery, entitled Rags to Riches, showcases some of his most noted and recent work. The breathtaking gowns were inspired by late night strolls in the dark city noting the contrasts of designer and bridal boutiques glistening in the night with the pearly white and shimmering gowns. You can check out more of Stan Olthuis’ work stanolthuis.com.

Punchy colours, impeccably clean lines, and colour blocking that mimics geometric shapes define Huntington’s upcoming 2015 collection. As a playful rendition to modern art, each piece speaks for itself. Angela Huntington’s unique vision and artistry behind the Huntington mode inc. Collection truly blurs the lines between fashion and art. Each piece is chic, well-tailored and easily transitions from day into night.

The Kensington Brewing Company is an independently-owned craft beer company in the heart of Kensington Market. We are inspired by the community we live in - a diverse, eclectic neighbourhood we call home – and make beer that reflects this grassroots attitude. In the spring of 2015 we are scheduled to open a new brewery, bar and retail store at 299 Augusta Avenue. The brewery features an immersive design, with the

Pekoe Kombucha Bar

goal of getting visitors as close to the brewing process as possible. A 30-seat bar will feature an ever-changing line up of seasonal and one-off beers, heavy on innovative and experimental styles. We are working together with vendors in Kensington Market to provide“pop up” food specials throughout the week. And of course, visitors will have the option to buy beer made on site through our retail store, open 7 days a week.

What started off as a solo project, quickly grew into a talented 5 multiinstrumentalist band from Calgary led by lead vocalist and founder Reuben Bullock. The band members have evolved over the years but the current lineup features Shea Alain, Brock Geiger, Dillon Whitfield, and Kaelen Ohm. Reuben And The Dark creates a unique blend of haunting indie music with a folk twist. The lyrics and tunes from their
