Exotic, romantic, crowded or isolated, the beaches of Ikaria are unique - discover them all! Here is a list of many, organised or not, with pebbles or fine sand and crystal water, ideal for all ages and tastes, set in an incomparably beautiful natural environment!
Agios Georgis
Agios Georgis (or Ai-Georgis) beach is located at the eastern end of the island. It is relatively deserted and not well known to visitors. It comprises two identical adjacent bays, separated by rocks. There used to be a lighthouse ('Faros') at that cape, from which the area took its name.
Tip! It is a small bay and sandy throughout. On top of the church of St. George, near the Drakano Tower. It is not busy, nor organised, but very romantic. Ideal for those, who like remote beaches.
Access Access to the beach is only on foot on a path from the tower of Drakano. Vehicles stop on the road to Faros. Then walk the path to the beach for about 25 minutes. Alternatively, you can hire a water taxi and reach the beach by sea
Anefanti
On the way to Faros, east of Therma, lies Anefanti beach, located between the Kerame and Nyfi beaches.
Tip! The beach is medium sized, has sand and pebbles and is not organised. A good choice to avoid strong northern winds. The view to the island of Fournoi from there is unique!
Access Access is only by car, down a dirt road, a few metres from the main road to Faros.
Armenistis
One of the most popular northern beaches, located in the very touristic resort Armenistis. It is in a small cove with a few umbrellas and has golden sand throughout.
Tip! Small canoes and equipment for other water sports is available for hire. Above the beach are many shops, restaurants, cafĂŠs and lodgings.
Access Easy access by private car, taxi or local bus from the main road of the island.
Atsipades
Atsipades beach is at the south-eastern end of the island, next to Faros beach. It is small, relatively remote, with pebbles and not well known to visitors.
Tip! Above the beach, you can admire Drakano Tower. It is not busy, nor organised, but very romantic. Ideal for those, who like remote beaches.
Access Access is only down a dirt road by car or on foot, a few kilometres from the main road from Faros.
Exo Plagia
The beach is located in the southwestern village of Plagia, near the larger village of Magganitis. Plagia villagers usually visit this beach.
Tip! The beach is small, pebbled and not organised. Ideal for those who like remote beaches.
Access The beach is accessible only on foot along a rough path, after few minutes on a dirt road.
Faros
Faros is the largest beach on the south coast, only a few minutes from the island's airport. Beachside tavernas, cafes and numerous lodgings around Faros highlight that it has become a rising tourist resort. The beach of small pebbles and sand is long. In some spots in the sea there are big plates. Before the deeper water begins there is this shallow rock-enclosed trough, which is a perfect, always warm bath for little kids whom parents can keep an eye on as they enjoy what nearby tavernas have to offer.
feature is the little-used concrete pier on the beach for small boats. It’s an ideal choice for families with kids, couples, young and older people. It is also suitable for water sports (canoe-cayak, wind-surfing, diving) and every summer beach volley tournaments are held. Tip! A
Access Access is easy with your own transport or taxi, with free parking available a few metres from the centre of the village.
Fyrodi
The oldest beach of the village Magganitis, on the southwest coast, very popular among the locals. It has pebbles and sand, in and out of the sea. Wide enough, it is not organised with umbrellas and sunbeds.
Tip! Locals like to gather there.
Access Easily accessed by car, as the road goes down to the beach.
Iero
Iero beach is located in the northeast, near the airport. It is a relatively deserted beach, not well known to visitors, because until recently there was no access to it. Its name derives from a myth that in that area the god Dionysus was born and his temple ('iero') was found in a nearby cave. The sand and small pebble beach lies in a small bay. It is not busy, nor organised.
Tip! It is ideal for scuba diving and snorkeling. A small sea cave of Dionysus near the beach, is waiting to be explored! West of the beach lies the wreck of a cargo ship.
Access Accessible only by car, off the main road to Faros, detouring to the airport.
Kampos
Kampos is known for Oinoe, its ancient Ikarian capital, and its archaelogical site. The large homonymous, all-sand beach is also very famous among tourists. It is organised with umbrellas and sunbeds.
Tip! It is very popular among families with young children. But frequent strong sea currents can make swimming difficult. To alert bathers to the danger special markers are sometimes placed in sea to define the bathing area. Don't forget to take your rackets and your ball for beach volley!
Access Access is easy by private car, taxi or local bus from the main road of the island, you turn off the main road to Kampos.
Seychelles
The aquamarine of Ikaria! A real gem in the south! One of the most beautiful Ikarian beaches that you shouldn't miss! Created several years ago by a landslide, caused by the opening of a tunnel to build the road serving the village of Magganitis, this is an "exotic" beach, as its name suggests: blue waters, white sands and impressive white cliffs create a magical vista!!It has become very famous in recent years. Near the beach are several cafes, restaurants and rooms to let.
Tip! The beach consists of pebbles and sand and is not organised. It has many underwater caves waiting to be explored. Ideal for couples and young people. Don’t forget your mask for diving on the seabed and of course jumping around the big white granite rocks!
Access Leave the car on the main road in an outdoor parking lot. The beach is accessed only on foot after a walk of 7 minutes from the main road along a rough path and descent. Caution and sturdy shoes are required for this difficult walk, but it’s worth it!
Prioni
Prioni beach is in a small cove in the southeast, situated between Agios Kirykos and Therma.
Tip! It has pebbles and some sand and is not organised. Ideal for lovers of secret beaches and looking for something different. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs and facilitates diving, snorkeling and dives from high cliffs. Recommended only for the adventurous!
Access Access is difficult and you need to be cautious and in good physical condition. You have to walk a path to the beach off the central Agios Kirykos to Therma road, which passes by the neighbourhood Fokianeika after the church Analipsis. Or you can swim to Prioni from adjacent beaches or come by boat from Agios Kirykos or Therma.
